>OOH I'm so depressed I can't take it
>better order an expansive book further dragging me down
How do people come to this conclusion? Coming from something with experiences with mental illness.
>>
>>8788084
Only reason I've ordered it is, various recommendations make it seem like something I'd personally enjoy - when it comes to taste, I enjoy dark toned cinema and music.
Figured I'd enjoy it just based off of that.

>OOH I'm so depressed I can't take it
I'm not that depressed dude, it's just interesting to read about how other people deal with it. There's nothing wrong imo for wanting to semi relate to something.

>better order an expansive book further dragging me down.
It's just a book dude, it's not going to make me want to kill myself.

>also expensive book, it's £2 dude.

according to wiki either thomas moore or wb yeats. i'm surprised it's not pearse just because of the nationalists, but yeats might be a reasonable compromise to some of them. heaney's dead now so i wonder if he's in the running. kinsella's still alive i think. kavanagh i don't really like but there's probably a faction for him in certain areas, like there would be for mangan.

i'd prefer if joyce was our national poet instead of writer though. he's actually got some good poems.

What are some books that will actually help and expand my view on the world? No trendy young adult shit that is made to bait movie deals please.

Is this second sentence allowed? I am writing in past tense. Do I have to say "wanted"?

Such a thing wasn’t uncommon in Portland. Businessmen want to be able to brave the city’s rain without carrying an umbrella.

Yes, say "wanted." Your first sentence is in past tense, so stay there for the second.

Has anyone here read anything by Michael Chabon? I was thinking of getting The Yiddish Policemen's Union, but I wanted to see what y'all thought of him first.

I like him a lot, but I can say that he's nothing 'special', for lack of a better term.

Can be pretty poignant emotionally but he reads kind of like an adult's John Green.

He's got a good short story collection, and I liked "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh" and "The Amazing Adventures o Kavalier and Clay".

>Literary genius is a multi-layered aptitude that consists of many unique cognitive, affective, perceptual, motivational, interpersonal, and state-dependent attributes, including the challenging of orthodox thinking, fertility of ideas, compulsive discipline and hard work, tolerance of ambiguity, innocence of perception, immersion in the present moment, intellectual diversity, an internal locus of evaluation, and sensitivity to nuances. The primary role of the creative genius in society is to hasten the development of authentic human values, which often requires these men and women to partially or completely withdraw from mainstream society. The extreme individualism of these people allows them to discover human values that are then used to revivify eroding or procrustean social structures. Creative writers provide the covert foundation for social change and spiritual transformation, which requires that they remain loners who are totally dedicated to their creative work.

Wow those are some nice terms, I the literary genius muse without reading most of them. My lips are fucking chapped right now, I think, and I have no chap-stick. I relieve a stomach itch, and think about how my identity is like a diffuse cloud of jokes, orgasms, and misery. What did Brian Wilson say about this. Something. He said something. I'm tempted to find out what, but I'm very tired right now and would rather just keep talking.

I stretch the muscles of my arms and upper body and stand. I'm going to use my literary genius today in some sort of resilient, conscientious, high g-factor fashion. Growling with sudden fury at the futility of something or other, I don't know, I throw a coffee mug at a window, but the window doesn't even smash. I am like a caged animal with a key to the cage that it doesn't want to use.

Damn it, I ponder, wandering around in small, tight, psychotic circles. No matter what I write I won't be any... any... somethinger! I'm missing... something! I'm incomplete. I'm less than... than something. I'm... ah... fuck... I decide to sleep it off and hope my genius hands will have come up with a solution by themselves by the time I wake.

Alright /lit/ I don't usually read books at all, I'm more of a /v/ guy but I have been assigned a book to read for my Portuguese class and I have noticed that the author is American, his name is Robert Fisher and the book I am supposed to read is ''The Knight in rusty armor''.

Since I dont usually read books I feel a bit conflicted now, I have to read the book (my grades are at stake but I also want to read this book and I wonder if reading the book in its native language is the best choice or not.

I may not be the best at writting in English but I'm confident that my comprehension of the language is good enough to be able to read the book as the author intends. (maybe)

Anyways, what would you guys suggest? I've read some lines and everything seems really similar but there are of course some things that are slightly changed.

Thanks in advance.

There is nothing more pleb than reading books in the original language.

>jealous monoglots can only read books in the original language
>patrician polyglots like myself can read the works of Goethe in French, the masterpieces of Proust in the superior Russian, Chinese and Japanese works in the opposite language, etc., opening up new vistas of interpretation and understanding

I tried reading a book in the original language once, just to see what it's like being a pleb, and it was a suffocating and nauseous experience. I pity those for whom there is no other option.

Keep reading books in translation anon, you are far more patrician than the cretins who populate this board.
>>
>>8787642
see what the critics says about the translation, if they say its sheit read the original, if they say its gud read the translation
>>
>>8787648
>>8787657
I think I will stick to the translation version.
Should I read all the books in my native language if their translation is good?

My initial thought was that reading a book in English (if written by an English author) would give me a better insight on his ideas and the way I understand the book.

What do you guys think for real? whats the general consesus?
