How did attitudes towards gays in the United States change so rapidly?
I saw a 2005 news clipping on the wall of a pizza parlor today in a predominantly liberal city that detailed how the parlor had sparked controversy and a boycott just for posting a rainbow flag on their window. Today you would be assailed by SJW thought police for even making a gay joke.
What happened? Do you think it could swing back just as quickly?

I live in a semi-rural town in Michigan. It's not the most redneck place you could possibly find, but it's up there. My town has only 1 gay bar and I've gotten dirty looks twice from holding my ex's hand in public, to give you some context.
Anyway. I'm mildly ugly (fat) but my mom is always INSISTING that certain guys are "into me". Tonight we were at Burger King late at night when the place was empty, and my mom insisted repeatedly that the guy at the counter was giving me a look, as in checking me out. I don't believe her because I'm ugly, and even if I wasn't I am not sure someone would be so overt about their gayness in a town like mine.

Is it possible to make long distance relationships work out?
A few months ago in a bout of loneliness I went to go try and meet someone using /soc/. A few people tried adding me and I ultimately found another man who I wound up caring about and cares about me in return. We enjoy each other's company and want to date each other, but there are a few problems:
>we live several states apart, enough to where plane rides are the only realistic ways of meeting (until someone moves)
>neither of us has come out as bi to our families
>I don't personally have a car or a driver's license (still go to college so I don't really need one yet)
>parents are extremely protective of me
Is there any way to make this work out? I was planning on finding a way to persuade my parents to let me go on a plane trip over the summer to where he lives and try meeting that way to see if we enjoy each other's company even in person.
Do you have any advice to help make this work out? Is there anything that I should do?
