>Welcome to NYCC 2016'S Artist Alley

Holy shit dudes. After applying for so many years I finally got in. I have never done an artist alley before and if I do this, I have no idea how to prepare for this.

What sells at an Artist Artist? Especially at one like New York Comic Con? Should I focus on my own original stories/comics or fanart?

I also work full-time so I'd have to take some days off to be there for the full weekend right? And if I'm there the whole weekend, what do about setting everything up? Do I have to set up my display and artwork every day and then take everything home at the end of the day or do I just leave it there?

I ask because I live an hour and a half from the convention so I don't like the idea of carrying everything back and forth.

Has anyone had experience with Artist Alleys?

why'd you have to choose such a huge convention for your first one? if your stuff is still shit, you're going get buried in the massive competition and probably not even get what you paid back. keep in mind artists fly from across the country to sell at NYCC
>>
>>2561615
>stuff is still shit

If OP was shit, why would NYCC approve? They usually only allow pros that are already published so that's surprised that they even accepted him if he's shit.
>>
/cgl/ usually has an artist alley thread, maybe go check over there.

do think you have to first suffer to make good art?

Man cannot make without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor.
>>
>>2560102
You will suffer no matter what you do but it's something you have to take in order to achieve greatness in your craft.

At least that's what the fortune cookie told me.
>>
it's hard for me to imagine artists like bob ross or iain mccaig ever suffered for their art when you listen to them speak about it

There's a specific style I really want to try and draw but I have no idea where to start and couldn't find anything in the sticky. I call it "implied detail", where you can draw these massive towers or armies and you can see where everything would be very complex and littered with detail, but when you zoom in on the pic it's just almost random assorted lines and shading, seeing it as a whole piece however seems to give you the illusion of detail. I see it mostly in dark fantasy, I'll post some pics for examples.

In this picture, you can see that there is a massive army of orcs and it feels like you can make out their shapes and what they would look like, however they are just a bunch of lines upon closer inspection

This is someone's work I saved from here, everything looks super detailed with the picture as a whole, but when you look close at any one part it loses that detail and appears as blotches of muddy color and lines(this isn't bashing, I like the style.)
>>
>>2561333
There's no trick to this, it's just effective understanding of how to simplify complex things to their basic essence. Working zoomed out will help so you don't get too caught up in it.

This one interests me quite a bit as it uses barely any color yet seems so vibrant. I have no clue to what the process is for drawing something like this. Do they sketch out random rock like shapes, fill in dark colors and slowly highlight to what feelS right? I need a method to this madness

fairly nice, colors are a bit over saturated for my taste, and the blue is a little intense based on the surrounding orange clouds. Also can't tell if it's the photo or not but the horizon doesn't seem straight.
>>
>>2561140
yeah i still need to fix the horizon i'm gonna wait til all the oil is dry first, but ya i wanted some stronger colors for the mood of this piece. thanks tho!

How do I into composition?

I recently started a major illustration project for practice and to test my skills. Posted my progress on /ic/ after many hours and learned that I really lack composition skills needed to do illustrative work.
Just finished my 1st year in fine arts so I have learned the very basics like the golden ratio, guiding lines etc, but where can I learn more advanced composition that would allow me to do thumbnailing practice like in pic related?

I would love it if you guys could critique my artwork. Be brutal, I can take it :D Its just that I feel like my art has kind of stayed the same for a while & imo some are decentish but a lot of it look really amateur so I'd really love to improve my technique!
Second thing, how much would you pay for an A4 sized drawing of mine?

My instagram is @chrissys_drawings for more drawings.

What

Any Krita users here? I can't seem to get the hang of making my own brushes, I've been fiddling with it for like 2 hours now but it's really weird. I'm trying to make a brush like the guy uses in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC3OxonJcXQ

desperation bump.

I got close but it's still not there, not sure what i'm doing wrong but I can't gt it to smudge nicely. It looks really jittery due to the brush being square, hard and rotating with the direction of drawing. Idk if that's even fixable
>>
here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?390835-Krita-3-Alpha-is-up&p=3040265&viewfull=1#post3040265

anyway some settings were flipped in 2.9 apparently and you may have to reverse the curves a bit. I didn't make this but I hope this helps

best of luck
>>
>>2560208
go into brush settings and look around there. I know for sure there is an option for the bruhs rotation based of the direction of drawing. Also I notice if you make a point with some brushes it spins on spot, I don't know if there is an option for this one but look around, might be.

Hey guys, across the past few months we have made considerable new progress with the new sticky. However, there is now a discussion as to whether we want to change the formatting.

Here are the 2 contendants:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

and

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit#

You should vote in the newest version on the 5 new points that were brought up.

Finally, we're once again asking for your help! What would you want to see added to the sticky? Can anyone recommend pencils, brushes or acrylics? Anybody see typos or sentences that were written by a 4 year old? Or perhaps you have a better idea for formatting? (We're currently thinking about the pictures so don't mention that yet)

I am putting together a little cartoon book for some friends getting married this summer, and plan to print off a bunch of them to give to the families at the wedding.

I have the drawings done, and am using Paint.NET to do all the digital work. But, I have no clue how to do my backgrounds. I normally just use some pastel color for 100% of it... but I don't want to do that for every page all the time.

I'll be doing lettering and dialogue stuff later. Here's the cover, which I'm happy with right now and will do the title lettering on later.

So I added some lighter colors in, and then pixelated it in Paint.NET. I actually used the "Effects - Distort - Tile Reflection" to make it into little squares, then just manually added some whiter lines across the page, before using "Effects - Distort - Pixelate".
