The trick of showing a detailed background in the first panel is well known: notice how in the other panels they're floating in some white space, no more chairs and tables, no floor, stairs and columns all dissapeared. This is an elegant solution but don't abuse it.

For the main panel, my bet would be on Google SketchUp for the stairs and chairs, would also save time.

Even then, it's probably taking quite some time, I think most comic book artist are supremely patient to draw the same dudes again and again for hundred of pages.

I'm going full jew here and not going to pay for a goddamn color wheel plugin. I'd prefer to learn how to code and make one myself, then again that's literally inventing the wheel *badum tss*. Does anyone here have CC and a working, free, color wheel? would you, oh beautiful anon, guide my way?

What does /ic/ thinks about the Hockney-Falco thesis, and the documentary Tim's Vermeer ? The ones who pretend that classical paintings are sooo damn realistic, that they were probably made with a camera obscura and other optic devices...
30 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>

I don't have time to detail all this right now, but the documentary made a pretty good case, from a scientific POV.

In particular, Tim predicted based on his experience that some lens distortion should happen at some places in the picture.

The other argument is the rate of decay of light, which cannot be observed by the human eye with the accuracy of Vermeer's paintings.
They did happen in Vermeer's picture.

Many paintings at the time did have some photorealistic backgrounds, with figures drawn in the room with such poor colors, anatomy, etc, that you would believe it was painted by the artist's 7yo son afterwards. It's explained neatly if the artist used this technique. (you can't really use it for humans)

It is interesting to note that the technique itself does not do all the work, and there are a bunch of painter technique required to make a painting of Vermeer's level with a camera obscura. But combine both and you strike gold.

>The other argument is the rate of decay of light, which cannot be observed by the human eye with the accuracy of Vermeer's paintings.
>They did happen in Vermeer's picture.
That whole part was bullshit. You can observe the falloff of light. If you paint it a singular tone it will be obvious that it should be getting darker and it will look off. Knowing even basics of light theory will allow you more easily observe subtle value shifts too.

How to spot some sleazy entrepreneur marketer
>pause the damn video, don't even give it a second of your viewtime
>check the description to find any website linking back to authors digital product
Oh look, what a surprise. Man says don't follow your passion whilst he is following his by making $$$ off of others telling the self-defeated to give up theirs.

These people plague youtube. They come in all shapes and sizes. They're the ones telling you:
-don't go to college, instead I have X course that will be 10x better
-nobody is hiring, instead I got X product that can get you hired
-your life sucks, I have the solution to my website
-4 minute motivational video, 10 minute spam of come to my website for more goodies
etc etc etc all of which have the same format, same carrot on the stick THEY are the ones making money telling YOU not to do something but they are somehow your savior

And it works, because people are stupid. People love to give up easily. The people who do this are genius exploiting the already given up.

Hey sorry to bother you guys, I'm not an artist but I noticed that a lot of digital paintings today use the same style and effects, it's hard to tell who's the artist behind many popular fanart paintings. I'm wondering if this is the first time that something like this happens? Is it because of tutorials and patreons and gumroads?

This is not about specific artists or traditional vs digital, I apologize if it's a bad question.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Well observed, but yeah, generally it's not even tutorials, but just the issue with digital, tools are handy and generally you tend to use them rather than restrict yourself.

Crude example: because workflow is generally faster with digital, rather than trying to place one good line you can scribble few until there will be perfect one and erase the rest or even append those lines to one.

Theoretically the same thing, but not quite. And there's lots of such things that build up on top on each other.

Notice that best digital fags generally have very solid painting background. They work differently than most: restrict number of of layers and have different workflow.
>>
Anon it might just be because you dont have a developed enough eye to spot the differences. Chances are, you would think that all renaissance artists are the same too.
>>
>>2563311
>Notice that best digital fags generally have very solid painting background. They work differently than most: restrict number of of layers and have different workflow.
they do that also because they can afford to. if you are a small fry artist you will be asked to change a lot of stuff in your work, and here multiple layers come in handy. but when you are a well know and have artist freedom on your pieces you can work on just a few layers

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

How does /ic/ deal with "starting" a drawing, painting or just sketching something? The majority of the time I can't begin anywhere because I can't picture it in my mind. I know it requires trying but the motivation is just not there. It hasn't been there for years. Every once in a blue moon I'll sit down and do something that I actually put effort in it and recently it was a self portrait. But it's like there's a 3 digit lock on my imagination and I'm stuck on the second number and I've lost the key to my creativity.
How does one break free?

If you don't want to draw, and are unable to "force" yourself to just do it then maybe art isn't for you. People who do this all the time or do it for a job don't usually require extreme measures to make themselves draw.

If you're just lazy then you need to analyze your behavior. Even the best artists don't always want to draw but they're able to make themselves do it because they have to for work or practice.

You have to stop waiting for "inspiration" or "motivation" and instead just force yourself to sit there and do it. It might take you 20 minutes of fumbling around until the good idea hits. Discipline trumps inspiration most of the time. I know for me I might start out with a generic idea but as I get into the sketch and start thinking about things the idea develops into something better. It might take me 10+ sketches to get a good layout and change up the idea before arriving at something worth doing. If I just sat around and waited until I could "visualize" something w/o doing all that work I'd never do anything.

I think you're looking at the act of creating art incorrectly. You don't wait until you have the perfect idea, you create a bunch of shit preliminary work before getting to that good idea. Highly skilled artists can pump out good ideas quickly/without a lot of preliminary work because their preliminary work was the 10-15+ years of expearence prior to starting that sketch.

Along with all that your taste evolves and becomes more refined. (the more art you look at over the years and the more you work) The lame crap you did before you just pumped out no longer appeals to you and you might have to work a little harder to get an idea thats interesting enough to finish.

TL:DR Force yourself to work more, don't be afraid to make bad uninspired art before finding something you feel like finishing.
