So i really like Akira Toriyama's traditional color work and was wondering what he used to make them. After some reading i found out he used a coloring ink called "Luma" that has apparently been discontinued by the manufacturer.

I'm now being told that "Dr.ph.Martin's Bombay India Ink" is the next best thing, so i was wondering if any of the denizens of /ic/ had any experience with the stuff and could elaborate on whether this product is all it's cracked up to be for coloring.

I use it as my main medium, and I really love it. It's got great rich saturation and blends really nicely, and even though there are loads of color options, the color variation you get from just the primaries is more than enough. The red and blue primaries mixed together make a nice true purple as well.

The golden yellow is almost required if you want warmer yellows though, but to make a true chartreuse you need the standard yellow.

My only complaint is that if you lay the ink too thick it can dry "shiny" and plastic instead of matte. That can be avoided with some practice though. The biggest challenge is working with large, blended washes quickly, because unlike watercolor it does not forgive and forget.

Do you know how they compare to the pebeo color inks?

I'm in a rut artistically, and it's beginning to affect my work ethic. What are some warm ups and exercises you guys like to do to stave off art block?

Go on danbooru
See what's new
Feel disappointed and regret that I can't do those
Realize that I can do a faux copy of them
Proceed to go draw said whatever

Alternatively
I like to draw memories like a house or a room or something

I've been thinking about going back to my fundamentals. As I'm looking through that beginners link on the front page, it I my cements that I ought to do that.

Should I go to art school, or should I take classes on the particular things I need to get better at? What are the pros and cons of each, not taking in account the money?

artschools give you a better opportunity to make connections, thats about it . if you're not a total retard and have an ability to use common sense you can teach yourself everything you need for free online

Take classes. Don't be afraid to spend a few thousand dollars on guided education, but don't be a retard and go to a $50,000 a year art school and think that you're going to make it out alive unlike 80+% of your peers.

Any professional here who suffer from imposter syndrome?

I know 4chan isn't best for serious discussion and far from a professional forum, but it's anonymous so I will give it a try.

I got about 6 years in the industry in different companies. Most jobs and freelance has been soso. I am finishing my first year in a new huge studio and they want to sign a three year contract with me. They are paying me a lot. More than my parents made together back home in my small town.

I changed title a lot and now doing purely GUI responsible for a quite large project with two other guys but I have a constant fear that both of them are ten times better than me. Whenever our boss calls for a meeting I literally plan how to pack my bags and leave the office. Both are recent graduates specialized in this field in particular, I am not.

Is there any artist here who have experience with this?'

I think a lot comes from me changing my department to GUI and I feel I lack the basics. But there seems to be a lot more concept art tutorials than GUI ones.

I'm in similar shoes to you anon. I think the best way to combat it is to realize that it's just your own brain deceiving you. Your brain automatically is dismissing positive things and fact and focusing on negative emotions instead. Realizing that your brain is thinking illogically is the first step to overcoming things. I'm not fully there yet myself, but I think I am at least somewhat functional.

Try to maybe list out things that are concrete fact, and look at it as objectively as you can. don't include thoughts or feelings, just list out facts. For example, from what you have mentioned:
-you have 6 years of professional experience
-you have worked for multiple companies, which means several different people have independently decided your skills are what they need
-you got hired at a large studio
-you have been working there a year which means you must have passed any probation period
-they are offering you a contract for three years which means they are happy with what you've been doing

Any doubts you have are just thoughts or emotions that you personally carry with you, but it isn't supported by how others view you at all. Objectively you are in a good position and doing a good job, so just focus on that instead of getting in negative mental spirals.

Also this is just a guess, but if you have lots of experience in various roles then you probably bring different things to the table that the two newbie grads can't.
>>
>>2912645
Well, if they specialized in whatever field you're in it's only natural they'd have a better skillset than you right now, right? The company hired you for 3 years for a reason despite not having this education... Don't disappoint them my man, prove you deserve it.
>>
>>2912645
That's good, your colleagues are there specifically to create an environment that will push you more than you could on your own.
Just don't try to fuck with them, stay a bit longer than you need to and do honest work.

How much would you be willing to sacrifice to "make it"? All your friends? Tens of thousands of dollars and years of your life? A stable cushy career? At what point do you stop living in the clouds and kill those dreams?

Every artist handles it differently. Find a couple people who do it in a way that you like and try to understand what decisions they are making. Then look at real smoke and try to break it down in a similar way.

I find symbol drawing to be somewhat challenging. I almost always get the right answer on this but drawing things in perspective is so ingrained for me that it feels werd to draw a rectangle that's supposed to symbolize a box since it seems to respond best to symbol drawing. It's actually a decent exercise in reducing things to their bare essentials
