I just started visiting /ic/ a couple weeks ago. Still getting a feel for the place... And holy shit are there a lot of whining, self pitying "artists" here. I mean its thread after thread of people posting basically this:

"Does anyone else feel like youll never make it"
"I practice and practice but never improve"
"I want to kill myself" etc

Not to mention all the other forms of negativity. Bitching about artists who are popular and how people who deserve it less than you have made it.

Has it always been this bad?

Welcome to /ic/
We hope you enjoy your stay

The best advice i can give you is stay around for a few months, download as many artbooks/lectures as you can and then bounce.

You'll be doing yourself a huge favor.
>>
This place turned into /ic9k/ a few years ago. All the good artists left and all the sadcunts stuck around.

If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

For something like this to work the best that it can, the perspective needs to be consistent. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case.

In the bottom half, the gradating density of lines (dots on lawns, the waves in the water, etc.) - these all give the impression that the first half before the wall has a different perspective than the top half.

Many people browse on phones, where this could be an issue.

How do you learn to paint? I have that light and color book but it has nothing about actually learning to paint. Anything that teaches you how to texture, proper technique, etc?

Paint from life, sit something on your desk, stick a lamp on it and go at it, lay down your initial guidelines and sketch the object out, and then start to really think.

>What color do I think this object is?
>What is the interaction between the light and the color of the object?
>What is the interaction between the object and its environment? Is it reflecting a bit of the desk/me/surroundings?
>How is the light changing as it bounces off one object onto another?
>How can I convey this entire scene with just 3 values? How can I simplify it?
>Should I select the right colour for the background first, and then choose the object colour relative to that? Or the other way around?

etc. I prefer life studies because there is less pressure for perfection compared to photo studies and more room for personal interpretation.
>>
>>2924556
you need to understand how values work to depict light. Then understand the relationship of HVS. Then understand shifting color temperature in the context of a scene.

It sounds retarded but i didn't actually know what painting really was, since a lot of old digital workflows were do line art+color lineart. When i realized actual painted images depicted edges with values and not bounding them with lines it started to click.
>>
>>2924569
also look up the concept of local color, and how it really fucks up your perception of color, this is related to color temperature

Just realized I won't make it. I was forced into getting a full time job as a housepainter and now work 50 hour weeks, from 8-5. Previously I was NEET and had all the time in the world. Now, my whole life is painting doors and baseboards and walls. My manager who's 10 years younger than me and female hates me as well.

What should I do?

If youre serious about trying to make it you wont let anything stop you and you wont make excuses.

So, if you think you wont make it, and if you dont fight for it you wont.
I get that its tough, maybe youre tired from working so you dont have the energy, but you gotta pull energy from your desire to make it.
Im not judging, honestly im pretty much in a rut myself mentally, i dont think ill make it either and its because i see that im not doing anything to make it happen.

Either fight for it or accept that youve lost the drive. There can be no excuses.

Is there any sort of art program or school that's affordable for a 20 year old? I hate my major as an undergrad at UCI and it all feels like such a waste. I want to draw, but I dont know what options are left at this point

you COULD just take some art classes at your local community college, if you are worried about the cost. That, or just learn online. You don't need to pay $$$ to git gud.
>>
If you want to be successful as an artist, and still want to go to school, get a business degree. There are plenty of books, videos, and even full classes out there on the internet, available for free, or at a fraction of the price of a formal college education. As an artist you're judged by the work you produce, not what school you graduated from. It's a skill you must train with your own hands. But to sell and market that skill, and make money from it, it helps to have a least a basic understanding of business and marketing.
>>
>can afford going to a UC
>asks about affordable for art school
They're the same fucking price.

Alright /ic/ I'm getting kinda desperate because I have no fucking idea why I just can't find the fucking references I want.

So basically I want to create a bit of a series of these "scary" charcoal drawings you typically see in Hollywood horror movies when someone has been traumatized and just keeps drawing the fuck out of it. But I can't for the fucking life of me find anything on it.

I bet some super artsy faggots be like "teh fuck you on about just scribble some shit" but I'm stick figure level and need inspiration and reference material.

I've been out of the art game for half a year now after getting way to caught up in technique, improvement, and endless sheets of figure drawing. I became somewhat successful, had a steady following, and was doing commission work, but at some point my love for the hobby dulled and my creative drive seemed to dry up.

I'm rusty as hell but figure I don't want to give up on the hobby I once enjoyed so much. Are there any good books or videos to reintroduce me to art touching on the foundational skills but also giving advice on actually creating art and learning to enjoy the process?

I need a less rigid approach, view, and workflow.

Try to go back to what inspired you to draw.

Whenever I'm down and out, and I ask "What's the point? "I always go back to this video.

Don't think of it as art like drawing or painting. take on the role of a photographer who gets to travel to unseen worlds, and encounter all sorts of things that don't exist. Your canvas is where you show people all the the things you want them to see.

Everyone is so upset about things because they spend their lives comparing themselves to people they don't even know, and lives they haven't lived. Withdraw from the world that's hurting you, and spend some alone time with your art. It's hard to get lost in the art when you're holding on to unknowable standards, and comparing yourself to such-and-such, and how little Timmy is only 4 years old but is better than KJG, Amundsen, Murata, and Jesus combined. Negative thoughts will withdraw and distract you from your work, and the thing you need to do great work, is focus, and concentration.

Perfect practice makes perfect. if you practice punching, you will develop the muscles needed to throw better punches. If you make shitty art, you will get really good at making shitty art. So the key to improvement is the constant adaptation of the approach in which you face the problems at hand. You don't get biceps by lifting the bar, it's the weights.

Draw and paint something and don't stop until it is finished. Balance your emotion. if you think it looks bad, take pride in it. If you like it, enjoy the feeling, then think of ways to do things better. 99% of the time, the things you learn have nothing in common with the things you want to draw. And 99% of the time, the things you want to draw aren't fun to make, and so on. Some people get so engorged by positivity that they complain abut nonsense. Others are so starved of positivity that they desperately need it without even realizing it. positivity is hard to come by, and even then, it's hardly appreciated. if you feel good about your art, then feel good. You don't need to tear yourself wide open all the time. People neglect their reality so easily these days.

Sadly, what inspired me to draw really doesn't inspire me any more, and the reason I got into art didn't work out. It was initially animation, but after getting decent at it I realized I couldn't stand the process and would get burned out half way through every project. Good advice, but I'm afraid it is something I have already tried.
>>2927214
Finishing art has always been a big issue for me. Back in the day the big thing was pencil mileage, not ever completing something but doing a ton of sketches and putting focus on the body and studying anatomy. Now 5 years in and I'm a master of sketching the human body and little else. When I complete a work I definitely have that negativity you're talking about and often get pretty anxious about it. I figure I'm at the point where I need to stop trying to get gud(even though I'm still bad-mediocre on just about everything but the human body) and instead need to start enjoying the process or I'll never finish anything.

It might not be a bad idea to draw and finish some things for myself for a while though. I think the hardest thing for me to overcome will be my self confidence. I used to love the "everything I draw is shit" mentality because I thought it would force me to get better, but now it hinders me because that has become the focus even when I don't want it to be.
