What are the advantages and downsides of working on a tablet computer? I'm thinking about getting a Microsoft Surface 4 or an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil to draw on at work but I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

For example...how do you ctrl-z!?

I actually use an Intuos Large and a laptop at work currently and it's a close to perfect setup, but with the counter I work at having no leg room I have to kind of twist my body slightly and lurch forward somewhat to reach the drawing surface and keyboard, and I can tell that it's really not good for my back so a compromise needs to be made.

You might need to buy a matte screen protector for some texture and might need to get used to a new drawing program and lack of desktop features depending.
>>
opinions, etc. etc.

pros:

- makes me more productive (no sitting at the same table you do retarded shit at like play videogames, watch porn, etc. different mindset)

- comfy as fuck, can use it anywhere

- feels like a sketchbook, you're thinking about drawing as soon as you pick it up, more """fun""" to draw on

cons:

- windows is absolute shit on a tablet, ui works like shit on art programs (csp is the most optimized for tablet use hands down, but still), have to use virtual hotkeys to get any sort of workflow, which kills the already critical real estate

- wacom emr is kinda shitty, jitters everywhere, horrible at edges or near magnets (such as those in the built in speakers)

- n-trig, while having much better edge performance, still has jitters and takes a stupid amount of pressure to activate (you have to press relatively hard to get any reading whatsoever, can't be fixed through pressure settings), terrible if you are light handed

- most "good" tablets have shit batteries, and are basically shitty outside of drawing, which is a pretty big minus considering the cost

- have to choose between being optimal for actual drawing and outside use (12 inches is great when seated in your house, but it's huge for when you need to carry it or use it in public)

- some get hot as fuck

General tips:
Surface pro 4 is kinda heavy/unbalanced to hold.
Surface book is much nicer, but it is also useless shit, because 75% of the battery is in the keyboard.
Ipad Pro felt great for drawing, screen is great, battery is good, it's light, procreate seems pretty good, but I don't know how viable ios is for general file management and such. I'm waiting for Ipad Pro 2.

I'd tell you to go to a store and try them out, but only Ipad pro has any sort of art software installed to demo, and even that is a 2 year old demo version of procreate + adobe sketch.
Surface pro/book has some microsoft garbage on it, but it won't tell you much.

(continued)

Ipad pro has the best digitizer tech hands down, as ridiculous as it sounds.

EMR and ntrig will have jitters on slower strokes, and above mentioned sensitivity issues (which you may not mind, depends).
The pencil is the most responsive to light pressure, and the tilt sensitivity is neat for sketching, but idk how much you'd use it in real work. I've read on /ic/ that it doesn't register the direction the pencil is facing, but that is bullshit, it works like conte. It also doesn't have changeable nibs afaik, and I'm not sure how fast it wears, so it might be more expensive than you'd like in the long run.

CSP is STRONGLY recommended if you're on windows, not only because it seems ot have been designed with touchscreen use in mind, but the stabilizer is very useful for said jitters as well.

I like the procreate interface, it was designed for the device, and it feels natural once you're used to it. It also needs no virtual hotkeys.

Like I said, I'm not fan of windows on tablets. They had a promising thing going with 8, but at some point all the software devs gave up on it, and switched back to desktop only.
It's workable, but annoying.

I'm looking at the ipad pro, but a new one is due soon™, so I'll wait for that.
Cons are that is expensive, has no sdcard slots and may or may not be critically bad for file management.

If you want to give at go and not commit, you can try asomething like an asus vivotab note 8 (you need the bamboo stylus additionally, the default is too weak) or toshiba dynapad (if you can find one) or something, see how you like the environment.

Hi /ic/ I have a question, is selling art prints profittable as a Canadian?

I am making decent money off commissions a lot of the people that follow my art keep asking when I will start selling prints.
I have experinced how expensive shipping is but I am unsure of the cost of ink.
I have a high quality printer that I bought last year for photography but I rarely use it.
I have heard that ink is very pricey in Canada.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this sorry if my English is odd I have dsylexia.

Does /ic/ consider the line art on the left to be symbol drawing?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2929937
Anything that isn't going for and achieving absolute realism uses symbols in some capacity, especially stylized work.

That said, some symbols are three-dimensional and more refined than others. What this board calls "symbol drawing" is those awful beginner symbols that come from not knowing how to observe, not something like this necessarily.
>>
>>2929937
manga is symbol drawing, i dont understand the question.
>>
>>2929966

everything is symbol drawing, /ic/ has skewed the word beyond any meaning.

If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hello, im not sure what is this borad's stance to digital tablets but if there are people who uses it, i would like to read your opinion.

I have this wacom tablet which I've been using it for years, the benefits of using it is that I can work on it anywhere as long as there is a table but recently I stumbled to this new cintiq which can run an OS, i think is great but I haven't read much about people that have it. Will this be a good invest? I could go for a cintiq hd but I don't work in one place that often. Are there other alternatives that are cheap?

I had the Cintiq Companion for a year now. Have to admit I never use the companion part. I tried but ... it just feel awkward and there was a lot of lag. I just didn't like the drawing programs on Android - maybe there are better programs now, but my Wacom is on my table all day and hooked up to my PC and Photoshop.

But for that it works just fine. Far better to draw with it than my old "normale" monitorless wacom tablet (which name I forgot, sorry).
>>
>>2926636
the companion 2 is suppose to be a keyboardless laptop that can run software like photoshop or zbrush just to draw, sounds too good to be true, or mayb im being skeptical
>>
I've had monitorless tablets but I hated working on those. Invested in a cintiq24 and companion 2 and I can say it was worth it to me. The companion basically replaced my laptop, it's my only pc in the house now.

What does /ic/ think of ImagineFX?

Has anyone ever tried submitting content? From what I could tell their quality seems to vary quite a lot. I'm wondering if it's worth contributing and what level of work is required to be featured

You can submit as well, for things like the fxpose.

I feel like a massive loser because... while I have written articles, tutorials, and been featured multiple times... I never got to do a cover when so so so many of my friends have. Worse, they list me as one of their influences, which just seems like some kind of poetic irony.
>>
>>2926363

If you already have contacted those people multiple times, why not ask them if you can do cover art for them? I mean, shit, what's the problem?

With the recent amount of coloring books released, I was wondering, can coloring be considered drawing, a person who only colors can be considered an artist?
2 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2929691
I wouldn't consider it drawing, but you can be an artist just by colouring, yes. There's artists who spend their career colouring comics that were drawn by other people. It's a legitimate job. Just doing colouring books though as a hobbyist is not really the same level though.

If someone says their work is 100% original than they either forgot or they're lying.
>>
>>2929211
That is HOW creativity works. There is no such thing as a 100% original thought. It is all a
conglomeration of past experiences. All great artists are highly influenced by others.
