its not like classes get organized into a unit
a unit contains the needed and available equipment and personel

so in your case a sniper is usually a riflemen issued with a specific rifle for a specific role but still part of his platoon
ad hoc field oranganized groups can and did exist but they are not the standard

an avarage german squad consisted of 2 officers with submachineguns, 6 riflemen and a light machinegun (light meaning not fixed position, hand carried, with a loader gunner and ammo carrier)
3 squads makes a platoon

then there are heavy weaponry platoons and assault platoons which are the exceptions and they are specifically assigner to their division/corps/army while could still namely part of their mother division

military organization is not a movie

An broad-range ancient history course, and then follow up with more specific courses in whatever culture, region, group, etc. you were most interested in, alongside a more recent history overview (like 1500-1900, nothing in the last 50 years, you're better off doing an independent study for that)

Then just study what you're interested for a while until you fill the gaps in your knowledge.
