The Cain and Abel story is a metaphor for the conflict between Nomadic/Herding societies coming into conflict with Agricultural societies. In the biblical account Cain gave offerings of grain to God and Abel gave an animal sacrifice, and God saw the animal sacrifice as superior and was more pleased by it thereby giving more favor to Abel. [spoiler] guess which culture created this myth [/spoiler]

Agricultural societies tended to stay in one place and were raided frequently by Nomadic tribes, any retaliation by the agricultural peoples was seen as an evil vile act because clearly the Nomadic peoples were in the right because God was on their side.

The old testament makes a lot more sense if you understand that each person represented an entire people or tribe and not an actual individual
