They were part of the Luftwaffe
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftwaffe_Field_Division
both
you got it backwards
its not like classes get organized into a unit
a unit contains the needed and available equipment and personel
so in your case a sniper is usually a riflemen issued with a specific rifle for a specific role but still part of his platoon
ad hoc field oranganized groups can and did exist but they are not the standard
an avarage german squad consisted of 2 officers with submachineguns, 6 riflemen and a light machinegun (light meaning not fixed position, hand carried, with a loader gunner and ammo carrier)
3 squads makes a platoon
then there are heavy weaponry platoons and assault platoons which are the exceptions and they are specifically assigner to their division/corps/army while could still namely part of their mother division
military organization is not a movie

How were Sturmgewehrs classified?

They were issued to some riflemen ad replacements for the kar98. Standing orders were to use the Stg44 in semi-automatic, essentially rendering it a very expensive, very heavy semiauto rifle.

For 1945, the sturmgwewer wasn't considered heavy for a select-fire rifle.
The cost of production for the sturmgwewer 44 was two USD cheaper than current production Kar98ks to produce, but when you already have so many rifles and so much tooling to produce k98s why stop?
Also, around the time the Germans actually managed to make production for the stg44 cheaper to mass produce they practically already lost the war.
Also, just because they were ordered to use the stg44 in semi-automatic, doesn't mean they would follow that order to their death, not that semi-automatic fire is less effective(actually better in many more situations than full auto).
