Because it's such a massive part of American culture and history. Literally nobody else gave a fuck about it. I bet you didn't even learn that the British navy spent most of the 19th century freeing hundreds of thousands of slaves, or that there were still Arab slave kingdoms in East Africa until relatively recently.

The problem that you're forgetting is scale. The Antebellum South practiced slavery as a legal institution backed up by the full faith and credit of the federal government, and once the cotton gin arrived they began practicing slavery on an industrial scale. Slavers in China and India have to work under the radar and are more a reflection of corruption, rather than institutionalization.

But the blowback against the slave-owning south has less to do with the number of slaves that they held and more to do with the culture that they were fostering, where even poor whites who didn't own a single slave was trained to think of themselves as belonging to the superior race, and live in a world where a social hierarchy strictly separates races into superior and inferior while systematically depriving the "inferiors" of their labor and giving them all the menial, dangerous jobs.

The fuck are you blathering about? The Byzantine Empire in the late 12th century was, though suffering some short term instability, more powerful than it had been for most of the later 11th century Its fall was never certain until 1204.

I mean I know you're meming, but Christ. The fortresses of Bithynia meant that the Ottomans weren't at the gates of Constantinople until two hundred years after the sack. They were closer after Manzikert.

People understood it fine, but that didn't matter when you couldn't get precision barrel and ammunition manufacturing going.

But they it was understood, they just couldn't make anything better at the time. A cube would probably have bettered the penetrating characteristic, but would decrease aerodynamics drastically.

Some places like the DR Congo, while horrific today, were also terrible during the colonial era. Some places would likely benefit from going under colonial rule again like Somalia or Sudan. Many colonial powers were very incompetent like Belgium and Italy while some did practice a degree of decency like Britain and at times France. It's still a very complex question because I'm not extremely sure how things were during the colonial period, if violence and poverty were rife like they are today. Colonialism may seemingly stabilise but the Africans would probably rebel like they did in Kenya and Algeria, I personally feel a lot of the damage done to Africa actually came post-colonially when the Soviet Union handed out tonnes of weapons to Africans who said they liked communism like in Angola.
