The whole "google culture" disgusts me. "Be excellent"? "Exceed yourself"? Do these shitstains not realize that it's all exploitation, at the end they'll become what everyone else everywhere becomes - a wage slave. Worse, a wage slave who think they're important but are really a former shell of themselves.
I do a lot of work on open source projects and I've seen plenty of people sink into the hole that is google and never hear from them. They stop contributing because "muh carreer" and become some weird zombies who believe they will get to upper management before they retire.
I've never worked on any job for more than 10 months, I do my work, I get the fuck out once I have enough cash saved to live for a few months. Bending over for bosses and getting greedy made me want to kill myself. All for some imaginary concept of security, which doesn't exist since bosses are all greedy fucks who will fire you and make your life hell once they find someone cheaper, and believe me if I worked in the field which I like to do I'd be fucked.
Bottom line is this - survive until mandatory pay is being introduced by a government, work short amounts on something unrelated, always go remote (and preferably don't tell them your real name) and remember that in 10 years you'll be in a remote village living on mandatory pay for cheap, but you'll have internet connection and enough money to buy parts, figs and onaholes once in a while.

Any tech books you recommend, /g/? I've read "But How Do It Know?" by John Scott, which is really good at explaining the hardware part of the computer. Now I'm looking for a book that explains the software part, maybe the operating system or some slick algorithms. I thought about pic-related, but it looks pretty intimidating. Any ideas?

I have CLRS. Used it for 2 courses at my uni. It's a good book, but not very easy. Should mostly be understandable for undergrad level CS, although some parts go way deeper and require graduate level understanding.
It's basically the algorithms bible though so you can't really go wrong with it if you're into that.
