When dumpster diving is brought up it's look at with scorn by some people on here because they say it's just hoarding. Let's talk about what USEFUL components we commonly find in discarded/old electronics and where to find them. Actually, any type of found thing you use in whatever you do can go ITT as well. Let's try to talk about components that are actually being used not just glued onto something to look cool.

Old CRT monitors are super useful to me right now because I had the crazy idea of combining light guns and video synthesizers.

I remember piles of them being everywhere less than a decade ago, but it was over a month of dumpster diving before one showed up. I'm now hording three of them now.
>>
Just a though, but why didn't you start a thread on "How to source electronic components for free" instead of dumpster diving.

This thread will devolve into people talking about that one great score they got 6 years ago, people saying they grab everything, people calling them hoarders, people saying they would shoot anyone who dived in their bins, and the other regular posts.
>>
>>922526
Also, put an ad on CL. People will give them to you for free so they don't have to pay to bring them to the dump.

Hey /diy/!

I have this LCD screen at home (pic related) that I wanna connect to my PC as a second monitor.
The model is HannStar HSD070I651, I have no panel for it, nothing. Just the plain screen, that orange connector (26 pins), and a power cord (2 pins).
I found this spec but I've no idea what to do with it.
http://www.encore-electronic.com/datasheet/HSD070I651-C00.pdf

Where can I get a controller for it, to connect it to my PC? tried googling but didn't get much out of it.

This appears to be what you are looking for, although that resolution would be pretty bad for a secondary display. 480x234
>>

hmmm you are correct, just read the specs, the resolution is pretty bad

thanks tho! I'll see what I can make out of this, or just drop the idea.

Meh, you could make a side screen showing system parameters like temps and voltages, twitter feeds, or other real time info you might like to display. I can't find it but some dude built a 5" CRT into the front of his case for just this reason. He did need to code up a solution to retrieve and pipe that data out, but it's not outside the realms of possibility.

Hi /diy/ I'm getting into PPG and I've found there is no such thing as a handheld fuel gauge. I was wondering if I could scavange my old scuba diving pressure gauge and do something with it. Any thoughts? Looks like pic related.

You will have issues getting a reliable reading, as the tanks tend to be small (in volume) and prone to fluid level changes due to flight attitude.

Most light aircraft, the fuel gauge is a suggestion at best, and fuel remaining is based on knowing the volume of fuel consumed at the desired power setting.

TL-DR?

Use a watch.
>>
>>928470
Basically to do this : I have 5 liters and engine consumes 3.2 liters at 7000rpm/h. i have a little more than one hour. Is that it?
>>
>>928475
Basically, except you have ~1 hour of total op, so your radius is 25 minutes with a 5 minute cushion.

Think flight time, and not fuel time.
Even though you're in a paraglider, you don't want to go wetfoot or hug a tree, because you thought you had a few more ml of fuel.

Alright guys, I have a problem. I'm trying to fix an old turntable I just picked up. The problem is, when you switch it to 45, it stops moving. This is the only real obvious problem I could find. These little horseshoe things are on the board that goes to the drive motor. And it looks like one is broken. Can anyone help me identify what these are or if this could be the problem? I'v exhausted all my google-fu and I'm not up to registering on some obscure forum right now.

You're on the money anon, that would be the speed adjust potentiometer for the 45rpm drive. The other would be for 33. And yes, it's fucked, the crack has broken the circuit path.

You'll need it's value to replace it. Have a close look. Do you see any numbers stamped on it? You may need to desolder it and have a look at the other side.

Matter of fact, the one alongside looks kinda fucked as well, the center of the wiper appears to be out of alignment with the body of the trimmer. Might be worth replacing both if you're restoring this beastie.

How do I make a barrel?
I want one to put liquor in but they are expensive as hell
Could I make a white trash barrel by taking a log, hollowing it out then capping it off?
Some sort of ratchet strap or clamp could put pressure on the caps from the outside to prevent leaks.

If you have to ask, you're going to spend more on wood, parts, and tools than the cost of a barrel.

So I'm basically going to be inheriting a house from my grandfather in about a year or two. The house is in a nice, established middle class neighborhood. It's a three bedroom house (including the one in the basement) and I'm going to add another out of extremely large laundry room. It's in good shape (as in structurally sound, etc.) but it needs a lot of cosmetic work. Luckily, my dad is a professional handyman and do all of the repairs, remodeling, etc.

I've got a few questions. How tough is it being a landlord? How is living with your tenants? How much should I charge rent? I'm thinking of bundling everything in one package (utilities, room, internet, etc.). Is this a bad idea? Can you guys give me some tips?

I just wanted to mention that the rooms are pretty good sized.

Being a landlord fucking sucks if you are the one that deals directly with the tenants. Having a manger do everything is the only way to go. Storage facilities are where it is at.
>>
>>922415
Well I'm mostly going to rent to a few friends. I'm going to be pretty serious about my selection process. I'm going to have to know they're responsible, have steady employment, trustworthy, and all that jazz. I'll be living in the house too. What do you think would be a fair rent price?

I'm going to have a "community room" where I'll set up a tv, a few sofas, and maybe a pool or a foozeball table. They'll have access to the washer, dryer, and kitchen if they choose to use it. And they have a pretty decent sized yard to do other shit it.
>>
Pay an estate agent to manage your property and tenants. You'll lose some of what you make but it'll be alot easier and come with less stress.

Two Quick questions here;

1. Will building a hho unit into my clio mk2 1.4 16v make a difference in gas usage/horsepower?
2. Is there a way that I can monitor my L/KM usage? Some kind of bdo2 monitor with a small screen of Some sort, that I can build into my dashboard?

Thanks guys!

Yes, it will reduce both of them.

Yeah... ODB II device installed into dash.

Sorry, to clarify, it will reduce your fuel economy, not reduce your gas usage.

I have a workout bar (link below) and I pretend to use it on my garage. The problem is it doesn’t fit anywhere.
Blue bars are the existing structure of my garage, made of aluminum. The red cylinder is something I want to put there to hold one of the sides. Green is the representation of the acting forces. The red cylinder will be suffering a perpendicular force (green circle) every time I use the bar, so it must be well fixed.
So I need something to fix that red cylinder to the blue structure or some kind of structure that acts as a support for the workout bar. It has to be removable (so no drilling or glue) and it has to be strong enough to hold my weight. Could you think of something?
The workout bar if you don’t see how it works:

I'll try cleaning two equally dirty coins in soapy water with it as a test (one in that piece of engineering shit and one just soaked in a cup)
i wont be able to test if it emits any useful ultrasonic sound wave tho, but i hardly doubt it.
even if they can generate some, degrading the power from the batteries will affect it.
