Has anyone ever hung drywall perpendicular to a bare concrete wall? I've hung my fair share but it's always been angled to other drywall surfaces so this is alien to me. Should I just leave a small gap between the concrete and the drywall edge similar to the one on the floor?

I'm sure this is frowned upon but is there a protocol for it?

A gap is necessary. Anything touching the concrete/block wall has the chance of drawing moisture.

Hold it up off the floor a half inch, and if the wood is treated the moister won't rot out the wood.

moving to western africa to live in a mud hut for a couple years. My job is going to revolve around education (health, sexual, other garbage you think people could figure out on their own) but in regards to the living arrangements I'm not sure where to start teaching myself. Every google result is either super liberal "I LOVE MY MUD HUT SO MUCH AFRICANS HAVE TRUE WISDOM ON HOW TO LIVE" or "MUD HUTS ARE LITERALLY HITLER IN HOUSE FORM, PLEASE DONATE MONEY TO GET THESE POOR PEOPLE OUT OF THEM" so the actual information in that regard is not very good.

Basically I'm wondering if /diy/ has any experience in this regard, especially regarding things like improvements. I'm sure west africans have specialized the art of mud hut making but part of me doesn't trust a culture that thinks raping babies will cure AIDS to be the most scientifically accurate.

God I hope you are not a white woman, Op look into people living in off grid cabins same principle, there is probably a lack of doors and windows in a hut so bugs will be a problem mosquito nets will be a must as well as a nice comfy cot. Make sure you have good sandals walking in dirt is horrible for feet when you kick off your boots, plenty of cool and light clothing will be nice too for that sans ac environment. Find a safe water source and keep a pitcher of water and store it in shade for hydration purposes through out the day. Bring a solar charger and some extra battery banks for your devices. If you can get a battery operated fan that will be a huge plus. Also remember there will be spiders scorpions ants rats snakes and mosquito, flies and gnat clouds. Don't sleep on the ground or they will feast on you.

Not OP.

I walk around barefoot all the time when I am off work. On sand, concrete and everything in between. I would say the worst is concrete but there is nothing wrong with being barefoot on dirt unless you have been in shoes your whole life.

Hey /diy/
I'm making a tail tidy kit for my motorcycle ( gw250).

I was wondering if some of you might be able to give me some inspiration on how to mount the indicator LEDS.
I've got some loose amber leds and resistors, I just need to mount them in a way that looks nice.

Anyone have experience with this?

>pic related is a kit that costs around 90USD

id just put em as a vertical line on each side but thats something that depends on your own taste.
i take it that having the indicators that stick out are out of the question?
>>
>>970017
I'd design out a proper mount and 3d print it. If you don't have a 3d printer, there are services that will print your object and ship it to you, or just let you pick it up locally.
>>
>>970017
i'd buy the kit. honestly once you start fucking around its going to cost more and somebody has already done the hard yards.

also police get kinda buttmad about stuff like diy vehicle mods. especially since its a safety issue.

hi /diy/ , can you all give me some light about transistors? got many problems with one, pic related, not sure about how order it because i dont know what it is. It´s used in a circuit with a piezo to amplify a cello, thanks in advance.

you aren't sure of the pin out or the type of transistor?
>>
>>969916
the type, i`ve been searching and it seems the code is not complete, maybe a japanese standard or something like that, i need to replace it but i dont know how to ask for it.
>>
>>969915
If it were a Japanese transistor, the type number would be 2SK168. Which is a JFET, which is easy to verify, assuming it isn't broken.

I'm in the market for a new soldering iron. I've heard good things about Hakko, but they look a little pricey. Any other good ones that don't break the bank? Or is it even that big a deal?

Just got a weller. Its great, although I'm not quite good enough to testify.
>>
>>969813

yes, that soldering iron is the best their is anyone who says otherwise is probably a JIDF shill
>>
I've used the Hakko FX888D and the Weller WES51 They are about the same price. I prefer the Hakko. It feels better in the hands and the included wire brush really extends tip life, though you can buy them separately.

Over all, it depends on what you're going to be using it for. I do lots of SMD work so having something hot with clean tips is crucial. If you're only using for misc doodads and wire terminals, a 25 to 40 watt Weller will do. They are 40 burgerbucks and under.

Okay so I want to make a propane gas forge for knife making, recycling, and farrier work. I was hoping to make pic related then set them up to intersect rather than being parallel. Would this work or should I just buy some fire bricks to make a quasi forge to encase it? If heat loss is an issue then what if I substituted the propane for MAPP gas?

Here's an idea of the individual burners. Mine would have a perpendicular intersecting brass tube rather than one from behind. Mine would also have the air enter from behind rather than the sides.
>>
dont intersect them. instead set up a box structure with refractory kiln bricks, and they are wide enough apart that you'll heat a larger area evenly. will let you do a longer blade. Far more effective, since that'll let you do all of a largeish knife in one pass, instead of lots of little bitty steps which cause grain growth. Also makes it more consistent for heat-treat later on.
>>
>>969748
Go read some more. Enclosing it is not up for debate really, unless you have gas falling out of your ass do for cheap. Even so it's pointless to be that wasteful, not to mention your heats will be slower without. One would think if you had even a basic understanding of what you want to do you would know this. Don't hurt yourself man, fire is dangerous, in case you weren't aware.

So I recently learned how they used to make halftones for newsprints of photographs. They had a filter that was covered in tiny cones. The intensity of the light passing through the cone determined the size of the dot that would appear on the other side. Does anyone know what the formal term for these sheets are? I'd like to find some to make halftones from film negatives.

Okay, so I've learned they're just called halftone screens. I know I could do this digitally, but I want to do it the old analogue way for no reason.

Bigger discussion about this would be really cool. I've been making kind of an exploratory hobby of halftone silkscreen experiments. Wrote a couple of Gimp plug-ins to mess with myself.

As a contribution, some further reading about the big pitfall (or happy side-effect, however you look at it):

If I made pic related out of wood how much force do you think it could withstand? This piece is intended to slip over the clutch of a chainsaw then a 2" pulley will be mounted on the shaft. The intent is to drive a winch with it.

I think you want to avoid wood for that type of thing. You run the risk of it either shattering, or breaking off where the smaller shaft meets the coupling

Is it veneer or real wood? Looks line veneer from the late 60's early 70's. Find out. You have to be more careful with veneer than sold wood and its important. If its veneer over reel wood it might be worth refinishing. If its veneer over particle board its probably garbage.

Its venire but I don't think it's particle board underneath or it didn't look like it to me sorry for the slow response I'm at work

Hello, Anon. I wonder if something like this might be replaced by a DIY device. It is an oilchecker, It displays the oil status comparing dielectric properties change between new oil and used oil. Is it the same thing as capacitance? ESR? A multimeter might be able to duplicate with acccceptable precision these readings? Thanks in advance for your comments. I am eager to learn.
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>969420
Yes. Capacitance ~ dielectric constant. So long as the shape of your capacitor does not change
>>
>>969420
Nah, you'd need a specific device for almost every kind of engine. Aluminum pistons/ cast iron block, steel pistons, aluminum block, maybe the piston liners are different material, ect.

It's easy enough to just look at the dipstick, see that it's dirty 'yup, time for an oil change' and than change your oil.
>>
Thanks for your reply, 969427 and 969432.

It would be interesting to adapta a some kind of cell for the oil and measure DEC and then compare with these readings. First I must get some of these devices in order to get an approach to a method validation.

>>969432

May I disagree with you , Anon? These device is not intended to check wear metals, ICP spectrometry is the right method to get this info.
An oil formulation contains antioxidants, among many others, these antioxidants give some dielectric properties to the base oil, when the oil has degraded or it has been contaminated, there is a change in these additives, thus, changing the DEC profile, (That's why it must be compared with a new sample of the same oil) The amount of change is then compared to a pre-established scale, and you can take a decision wether or not is necessary to make an oil change.

What dou you mean with "dirty" oil in dipstick? A very black oil? Milky oil? Or a visible wear debris and silt? there is a test, a very simple and useful test to see, in motor oil (gasoline or diesel) if it is already time for a change. If your car has been running a while and it is hot, put a drop of engine oil, from the dipstick on a paper, a bussines card would be nice, and give a couple hours, overbight preferably. Is there any deposits on the center of the blot? Is it an uniformally spot? Do you have any small UV lamp? Then take a look on the spot with the UV lamp... can you see a "halo"?

If there is a gummy deposit in the center of the spot, you need to change your oil. Why? Because the detergent-dispersant additives are overused. If the spot is wide and uniform, the oil might be used a lill bit more. if you can see a halo, you may be facing fuel dilution, a nasty condition.

If the oil is simply very black , it only indicates that the detergents are making his job of cleaning your engine, and keep that contaminants in suspension, for the filter to catch or to get rid of them in the next oil change.

Hello, I made a Leyden jar out of a quart jar filled with a salt water solution, and connected it to a switch for safety.
But I need help on how to charge it. I tried 120VAC positive to the top, and negative to the foil outside. All connections are ghetto but they work and I got 120 VAC on the multimeter.
But when I (accidentally) touched the 2 ends of the jar, all I got was a tingle from my finger (top) to my thumb (aluminum foil). I'm not sure it worked and I searched and searched on Google but I get nothing. Can I use a wall outlet to charge my Leyden jar?

Leyden Jar is DC you're trying to charge with 120V AC power. It doesn't work that way. You can only store DC but the outlets in your house etc. are AC.
>>
>>969394
you need to rectify the AC to DC if you want it to accumulate charge, that said, have fun electrocuting yourself
>>
>>969406
How do I get 100-150 volts DC to the jar. Batteries? AC to DC conversion? (is this possible?) I do have a shit ton of 9v batteries though

Wife and I are replacing the door trim in our house. We like the craftsman style but there is this strange hallway corner where there isn't enough space between doorways for the chunkier door trim. I'm visualizing some vertical fake joist in those 2 corners.
>>
>>969372

If the casing and head are just s4s lumber (Square edges, no profile) then just run them together like you would with base or crown at an inside corner. Leaving 1" or 1/2" gaps of wall between the edges of the casing at corners looks like shit, and will be an incredible pain in the ass to paint that sliver of wall if you ever repaint another color. It's done the same way in old houses with original trim, just butt everything together and it'll look great.

Hi

I need some ideas for adding privacy to a window. Basically I'm renting at the moment and the window in the kitchen is directly across from the neighbours.

Because whoever built the kitchen is an idiot, the gas stove is about 5cm away from the window and hence no curtains/blinds as they would catch fire.

I was thinking mirror window tint, but this would work against my favour at night wouldn't it?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Mirror tint will probably become visible if back lit at night.
There are also translucent films for use in washrooms and glass showers. They work like the cling film mirrors but can't be seen through. They are available in many patterns and colours - even simple frosted glass patterns.
>>
>>
put a privacy screen on the outside so your neighbour can't see you stove masturbating.

There is a really shallow (5-10 inches unless it rains heavily) stream behind my house that has some moderate flow.

Will anything interesting happen if I make a hole a yard^2, half-a-yard deep in it? Like will fish start living there or something?

I assume it will fill in very quickly if I don't make it wood lined or something, right?

I just had a this dumb idea out of nowhere and am wondering.

>>
why are you asking the internet?

>>
>>969278

This may not apply where you live. But I was reinforcing the walls of a stream for a client who lived on a steep hill and during the construction we dug out a couple of flat spots with water falls to slow the flow of water.

In these flat spots in the steam, which the spring sprung right behind his house, not 200 feet up the hill had started to show up with hundreds of what we call million fish.

So depending on your climate and the habitat around you it is entirely possible.
