Wood working general.

Didnt find a wood working thread in the catalog. I'm very much a novice, but want to get better.

This is my most recent project, it's all put together with pocket holes and not as stable as I'd like. Waiting on supports to come in the mail that I'm going to strengthen it with.

I'm going to be doing actual joints for my next project, but I'm wondering if anyone can post links or opinions about what joints to use where, what are better for different scenarios, etc. I'd appreciate it.

I'm not much of a wood worker, but I think a back panel would hold your boards together. Like the cardboard panels on some tv stands. Just put the nails in every 3/4 foot.

this
a back panel should make it sturdy as fuck.

I have a large piece of plywood I was going to use for that, but my wife likes the look of it without. If the new supports dont hold well enough I'll be doing that for sure.

Machining is a fascinating subject.
WHAT HAVE YOU MACHINED GUYS?
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO MACHINE?
WHATS THE WORST MACHINING RELATED INJURY YOU'VE EVER SEEN OR SUSTAINED?
WHAT WAS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE PROJECT AND WHY?
DISCUSS, TALK SHIT, SHARE INTERESTING PLANS ETC. ETC. ETC.

and now my real questions...
I might be able to get my hands on a Smithy brand CB-1239 combo mill/lathe/drill press sometime in the next couple of months.

The lathe chuck is seized up really bad(need a hammer to turn the chuck key), where can I find a replacement and how much can I expect to pay for it?

it doesn't have a mill chuck, where can I get one?

the belts that turn the lathe are missing, will automotive V-belts work?

the table doesn't move untill you've turned the handle 22/25 of a full turn is this normal?
if it isn't normal, can it be fixed?

this thing has probably been sitting in the back of a warehouse for the better part of a decade or two, what sort of parts would deteriorate on something like this?

seems like there's a pdf manual. read it. parts connections should be standard (morse tapers/etc.)

>The lathe chuck is seized up really bad(need a hammer to turn the chuck key), where can I find a replacement and how much can I expect to pay for it?
shoot carb cleaner between the jaws and the chuck
take it off with the bolts on the back
you may just have to clean it up

>it doesn't have a mill chuck, where can I get one?
enco or msc or ebay

>the belts that turn the lathe are missing, will automotive V-belts work?
they're probably standard belts. check the manual.

>the table doesn't move untill you've turned the handle 22/25 of a full turn is this normal?
>if it isn't normal, can it be fixed?
is it loose or hard to turn? hard to turn, find the slide lock, unlock it. or the gibs are too tight
loose - broken gears?

>this thing has probably been sitting in the back of a warehouse for the better part of a decade or two, what sort of parts would deteriorate on something like this?

nothing much. will have to clean out lube and relube everything.
>>
>>952865
Take the chuck off the lathe, try cleaning it up.

Soaking in Diesel will usually loosen up the old grease or dried out oil.

The jaws are often numbered to correspond to slots, just reassemble the same way.

If you've pulled the jaws and it's still stiff, find a bit of keystock the same size as the key, chuck it in a drill and while douching it out with penetrating oil, run the drill forward and backward to free it from the dried grease or rust.

A lot of mini lathes use large O rings for drive belts, but if you find a small AG or industrial belt that fits, they should work fine.

I have a belt from a concrete cutoff saw turning my old Atlas.

Injuries thread. What is your worst injury while DIY'ing? Mine just happened a few minutes ago. A capacitor blew up in my face and hit my lip. If it stuck me in the eye I would be blind for sure.

Have been hit in the forehead by a few brad nails, every time that shit happens I shit just a little. Worst had to be a sprained ankle from falling downstairs with a miter saw. Bruise ran most of the length of my foot on both sides, I think it was only as bad as it was because I was trying to save the saw, but either way it hurt for probably half a year.
>>
I once seen a guy slap a chunk 2x6 on his lap, then he ran circ saw saw into it...
His face was priceless when he realized what he had done
Never seen him again.
Same job I watched a guy set his pants on fire from sparks off the qui kcut.

When I was 16 and a mouthy little shit the concreters I was working with told me not to start the quick cut I didn't listen it went up it went down through my boot just in-between my big toe and the toe next to it doc said a cm either way and I would of lost a toe

Hey /diy/,
I live somewhere shitty and don't want my computer stolen.

What could I use as a computer case that doesn't look like a computer case, but still has enough air flow to house a computer/computer components?

Bonus points: if a robber hears computer fans sounds from it, he'll still ignore it.

I'm currently looking at air conditioning wall sleeves, or empty air conditioning units, any ideas would be appreciated.

Literally any fucking box shaped object at all. Or no box. You could very easily make a tall planter out of wood and create a false bottom where you mount your shit and ventilate it as much as you want. You can mount it in your wall. You can mount the components inside the desk cabinet.
>>
My computer's motherboard is mounted to one of the filing cabinets in my huge, heavy, steel desk. There's no way to quickly take it and go.
>>
trouble with this idea is your burglar will just follow the cables from your monitor, keyboard etc to this box.

So that means you with have to unplug and hide your keyboard and monitor every time you go out, and let's be honest after a month you'll stop doing that because you're human.

For what purpose? Is it worth it? I'm looking up info on earthen insulation r value and, given the problems with sealing against water penetration and the shear volume of earth to be moved, it makes so much more sense to just put in a couple inches of insulation above ground.

Fuck that. I've used the same Fenix at work for 2 years. Fits right in my pocket and does a damn good job.
>>
Wanted to keep the OP short, but here are my observations so far:

1. They used to all suck, but they're getting better all the time. I would never go back to incandescent.
2. They are expensive. I'm OK with that, but there are so many brands it is impractical for one person to compare 20 of them.
3. At the stores they are in packaging that does not lend itself to quickly testing for fitness.
4. Some are great for close up but all I have used are mediocre at best for longer distances.
5. Because I lose these a lot and I would like to have one for each car, two or three around the house, one for the bench, one for work, and one for my pocket because my sight is shit, I would buy about 12 of them if I could find one worthy.

I had a Quark AA2 R5
It was really great, but it got stolen or I lost it or something.
Havent seen it in years and its made me so mad that I wont buy high end flashlights.

I have a few LED Maglites, I have the XL100, an original aa Maglite LED with single mode, and the upgraded Maglite LED with the 3 modes.
They work fine and are cheap

Im refinishing an old rifle, and now that ive gotten it stripped of the old chipping lacquer the wood is in great shape aside from some nicks and dings, Ive had a couple of options kicking around but im sick of the same walnut finish/tung oil/BLO/boring classic refinish for old rifles. But then again I dont want it to be shit i regret the moment I start. The wood is birch with fairly regular grain, ive read that birch dosent take a stain readily and seeing as its 80+ years old, i cant help but think itd help. whatever im going to do id like to do a hard laquer over it just so itll last forever, and maintenance on the wood is nil. One of the options I was looking at was lightly torching the grain in such a way that it burns into a nice pattern, not tigerstripes or some BS but just folowing the grain so it zebras, but im not too sure about the specific wood if thatll work. Any other unique idea wood be greatly appreciated as well as tips on how to do said idea.

Ive been woodworking for about 3-4 years now doing custom molding and cabinets, and refinishing old wardrobes and desks accurately under a carpenter but he cant be bothered with my side projects,

I took this to /k/ and they gave me a bunch of shit about ruining the historical value or conductibility so I could really not give two shits about that.

This, cheapest way to get something like that is to scavenge from some scrap yard, they'll sell you a scrap bit of steel dirt cheap and it doesn't exactly have to be complicated so you'll pretty much be guaranteed to find something to fit the bill.

If you haven't layed bricks before, take your time setting up the area, making sure it's level and get your string lines and plumbs in order, nothing worse than having to rush or stop in the middle because something is out of whack and ending up with a grill where the sausages roll off because it's not level.

Picture sort of related, cool ass hidden grill.

>>

As with anything, it depends. I bought the corded one mostly for scraping and big long tough cuts of that nature. The thing is a beast.

The 12v is smaller and light weight that I bought for quick cuts on the job such as conduit (I'm an elctrician) or pipes. Also in some wear houses, electricity might not always be close buy.

I know you might say "oh just use a hack saw", but on long runs with rigid or larger sized pipes, it wears out the ol meat beater pretty quick, I don't care how strong you are.

On a related note, I will say that small dust buster is a worthless hunk of shit. Get the wet vac one, if you happen to be in the market.
