Is this something I can get into in my spare time?

I have no training as an architect or a structural engineer.

Drawing? Sure, but without the professional knowledge you won't even know what you are doing. That is the difference between fantasy fictional illustrations and actual real buildings.
>>
>>964811
Eh, there are enough resources online for him to learn. If it's just for a hobby it doesn't have to be 100% cleared for council and up to code, just has to be close enough.

>>964807
You can, anyone can do it, just depends on how accurate you want to be and how long you want to be learning. There is a lot of shit to learn, construction methods (for ALL areas of a building), materials, standards, local, state and country codes, standards and regulations. When being a drafter you have to sort of be a jack of all trades but a master of none, you have to know the basics in every aspect of a building so that you can roughly design it right, but then you hand it off to someone that knows the details.

I'm Australian so what I say will probably be different for where ever you live, but here there is the Australian Standards (details on how things need to be built, very specific things) the National Construction Code (more generalised on how things need to be built) then there are legislations and council regulations which all depend on where you are building, these things will guide your design and give you the limitations you need to make up a building and can be viewed for free online.

The easiest way to get into this is probably take a short course, again in Australia we have a thing called TAFE, you can do a 2 year night course that will teach you all of the basics you need to design structures.

If you're just doing it by yourself at home, if you want them to be accurate designs in any way, it's going to take years of learning.

I'd suggest something like SketchUp as a jumping off point.

It's very fast and fairly intuitive, very easy to make a quick mock up of your idea. You can also export projects to your desired CAD file format for further editing and revising, rendering, etc.

I'd also suggest not using ArchiCAD... AutoCAD's been on the Mac for a few years now, no point in settling.

There are plenty of good online books and video tutorials. I highly recommend watching video tutorials and learning how pros utilize their work space, work flow, hot key configurations, etc.

It makes a huge difference in creativity, speed, and legibility. If you ever plan to plot your designs, I'd research it first. There are a lot of nuances when plotting, fighting with line weights, etc. A lot of it is trial and error.

Hey there /diy/

I am working on putting together an electric booster pack for a bicycle, but I want to use a capacitor instead of batteries.

Planning on using a 24 V, 350W hub motor and a 2F capacitor from car audio thats 12v, 24v surge rating.

I want to charge it using my motor going downhill, and boost uphill.

Could I use the 24v surge capacitor and assume I can charge it to sustain 24v for an extended period of time?

Don't wanna blow my knee off - ty for response.

Not a good idea. Generally speaking, one should de-rate capacitors based on the nominal rating, i.e. use a >24V nominal cap if you expect a 24V input. Trying to use a cap based on its surge voltage would be terrible for the health of the capacitor, assuming it didn't blow up on you.
>>
>>964449
Also, according to this guide, "Rated surge voltage is the maximum DC overvoltage to which the capacitor may be subjected at 25 ÂșC for short periods not exceeding approximately 30 s at infrequent intervals of not less than 5 min."

I mean, it seems to work, but I haven't put my whole weight on it, but it looks bigger than it needs to be.

Is the fall just the sheath part of paracord? That'd be too light for my liking, i usually double mine (tape one end of paracord sheath to a thick needle and push it inside through itself in the middle). Also lose the tape and put some turk's heads there.

Did you roll it? If yes - did it help the strand drops?

>insulting tape instead of turk's heads
oh jesus i feel for you bro

my first hundred attempts ended in everything's fucked and i don't understand why aaaaa

it doesn't help that most 'tutorials' show how to tie one particular pattern but don't explain WHY there are patterns, and the youtube results are a bloke mumbling over a ball of black cord in a darkened room in 240p.

Is there some sort of jig or something that lets me sharpen these style drill bits with accuracy?

PS I sharpen ordinary bits by hand with a bench grinder but that's pretty easy. These require more finesse but the only jig I know of that can sharpen Brad points is some $$$$ Darex sharpener that no hobbyist would buy.

>>
Buy an auger bit file and do it by hand.
I clamp mine in a wood vise
If you are too lazy to by the correct file, then at least get one with safe edges.
Will only take a few strokes of the file to make it sharp.
>>
>>963856
Honestly... just buy new bits though
>>
Brad points are really difficult. Even our sharpening company fails on them.

Perhaps a chain saw file? Or a Dremel, it's not an easy geometry.

In the future try to avoid using them unless you know for certain you won't hit anything metal.

So I'm looking to make my own backpack. Tired of the available products out there, nothing quite fits my needs and I think I can do better just making my own. I think I have all of the tools and materials I would need.

I'm thinking of something sort of like pic related. Large gussets and compression straps so that it can expand or contract as needed, because my gear varies quite a bit depending on season and what I'm doing for the trip.

My questions is in regards to a frame. I have the materials and tools to make an aluminum frame, but I really don't want a large bulky frame, and I'd prefer it to be internal. I already have a really nice external frame pack for big hikes. This pack will be for carrying gear on shorter excursions, 1-3 days we'll say.

Thus we come to my question. Anyone have experience making an internal frame? As I said, I could do aluminum, but I feel like I'd have to pad it heavily to get it to be comfortable, and that's just added weight/bulk that I don't really need. I considered thin plywood, laminating plastic lids from big Rubbermaids and cutting to shape....nothing quite sounds like what I'd need. So I'm looking for some brainstorming/ideas.

For reference, this is what I've been using lately. the removable pouches are quite nice, but the picture is misleading as the pack doesn't hold its shape at all unless it is packed full of clothes or something else soft. Anything hard or just empty space will make it collapse or deform and I'm tired of it. Hence why I'm interested in making something with a light frame.
>>
>laminating plastic lids

I dont know how rigid you want it, but maybe some plastic folders are firm enough to keep your pack "in shape."

But honestly, I'd just make it without the frame, and add one later if you're really still needing one. If you pack it right, you won't even miss the frame
>>
>>963024
why can't you find an el-cheapo goodwill type store, that will have a hiking backpack with a frame already, and just build around that? you can chop it up if its too big too, just need a hacksaw.

besides that, I'd say fiberglass rods, and epoxy them together for your frame shape, keeps the weight down and bulkyness.

idk what you mean by an internal frame tho. if you where talking about something like two pieces of flat aluminum stock, running up an down, boy are you in luck.

Cut two pieces of the total length of your pack. and you can just take two pieces of fabric and put em on each side, and sew the aluminum flat stock into the backpack. TAD-DA! or if you want it removable. sew some straps on the inside to slide the frame rails into.

don't over complicate things too much, while I understand your excited to start this project, too much to learn too quickly will quickly make you just give up on it.

Hey /diy/, I just moved back home to save money and relocate to a better area but I cannot take the noise from my large family after living alone for so long. I've decided I'm going to build a small shed and throw a mattress in there, which is great because the property is huge. 10x12 is what im planning on. I'm not too handy but I have built a shed before so I'm fairly confident this will be easy peasy.

I have a couple questions.

>1) are there any torrents of basic shed plans that you guys know of?
>2) I know this will be far from accurate but If im just looking for bare minimum, pretty much a shack with nothing fancy, just the frame walls floors and roof, could this be done for around $600-800?

Pic related is what I'm going for, except with a door. I already have a foundation set to put it on. Is my price expectation unreasonable?

>>
>>962902
10x12 meters ? lol thats tiny for a property but whatever..
>>
>>962902
torrents? as if shed plans are secret?

is it basically an outhouse or is it supposed to be a liveable space?

for the basics: frame some walls, attach to slab, screw on some hinges and a board for a door, add sheathing outside, attach roof rafters with brackets, lay roof sheathing, put down some shingles

if you wanted electrical, insulation, windows, etc. that would take more doing

Any one with experiences with MatLab?

Because mathworks.com is a desert and a looks like the admin are a bunch of sissies, somebody has or at least tried the kkt (karush-kuhn-trucker) algorithm for optimize in matlab? Would be very thankful with your answers.

Plus, is better and flawless the language of Python in contrast with Matlab? Which of boths is usefull now day?

I think Matlab is dogshit, but that's not because of a lack of power or features, just because it looks god awful and the syntax is fucking assbackwards and has no consistency.

But it's incredibly powerful, and well supported. And seems to be fairly fast.

I dont think you can compare something like Matlab to Python, they're completely different. I much prefer Python as a language for its syntax, but Matlab just has the tools you need without having to go out and find a Python library for it.

There is an academic text named "Semismooth Karush-Kuhn-Tucker Equations and Convergence Analysis of Newton and Quasi-Newton Methods for Solving these Equations ", Google it, If Matlab were less shit in comparison with new currently programming languages maybe a bookstore for this algorithm can be easily found on internet, try it.
>>
My uni course has added Matlab as standard for the first time this year, it's pretty neat but I'm yet to see the full use of it really only being a first year. Interested to see how we use it in the next 5 years though and it's definitely preferable to the stuff I used in high school!

my goal is to get these (0g) in my ear tonight. my ears are not pierced. i have no patience and no money to spend on other methods.

i am thinking about piercing with a safety pin, tapering with a toothpick, a sharpened chopstick, and eventually a pen, then fit the earring in. all the tapers will be wrapped in teflon tape and lubed.

any advice? how traumatic will this be for my ears, anybody have any other ideas on how i can do this easier?

i am dead set on getting it done tonight, please dont try to convince me otherwise.

Either get some tiles that absorb and conduct heat poorly or cover the tiles with something that conducts heat poorly, like a rubber mat. As simple as that.
Your other options involve using energy to heat them.

Hi /DIY/,

Does anybody here know anything about gunsmithing or have a career as a gunsmith? I'm wondering about the profession and just thought I'd come to here to ask you. What sort of experiences/credentials would one need? What are the most enjoyable parts and most tedious parts of your job? What is your average workday like? Pic unrelated; thank you in advance for your answers.

Best regards,
O.P.

P.S: I originally asked this in /k/ but figured /DIY/ might know a bit about gunsmithing considering they know a lot about tools, doing projects themselves and may possibly work as gunsmiths/similar professions given they involve tools.

It's a profession full of hacks as well as super craftsmen. Customer wise full of wack jobs and serious user/collectors. If you are a top machinist and know your shit inside out you will attract the serious clientele and do OK. If you buy a lathe and mill and take a 2 week course you are going to be up against a pile of shitty competition competing for shitty clients.

If you really like guns and really like precision machining, and are willing to put in a few years to learn and gain experience, you could do OK. It's not easy or big money though, even if you're ace and find good work.

Check and read the gunsmithing forum at Practical Machinist to get an idea what's involved in the work.
>>
>>969025
I know I wondered some of the same things. I am watching this thread now.

Not really into guns, but love precision machining and an excuse to use some of my material engineering knowledge.

Backed off after seeing a bunch of legal requirements, nothing I couldn't do but seemed a bit more work than I cared for just an interest.
>>
>>969025
If you're good at the stocking side there is work in muzzle loaders, meaning flintlocks. It'll take years of a few rifles a year to build a name and customer base to the point you can do it for a living, but the legalities aren't nearly as involved. And you need to be very good. The whack job customers, like on /k/, will make you shake your head in disbelief if you go with modern firearms.

Yesterday I asked my landlord to unlock my basement to investigate an offensive odor and we discovered that it was a mire of stinking human feces, toilet paper, etc. At least two inches deep in a 12x12 area.

Haven't snaked the line yet, but I have a question:

Usually tubs and toilets will have problems draining when the line is clogged. But I didn't notice anything unusual about the plumbing. Everything drains quick and smooth. Can this clue help narrow down the source of the blockage so we can get to the bottom of this quicker?

I literally heard a very subtle muffled splash-like sound after flushing many times but just chalked it up to weird plumbing. Never smelled anything until the weather changed and that's when I put two and two together.

never move into a house that has a condition of "dont go into this room anon" because people fucking store shit in there. its either illegal and they want to keep it not at their house or they're being cheap niggers who dont want to pay for storage. and they're risking literally forcing you to live over a pit of shit in your case or a major fire hazard by not letting you enter sections of your own house.
>>
>>967881

Hahahah that was exactly the case in this situation. There was a ton of stuff down there. I actually previously asked about getting the key for the purpose of storing my own things and was told "it's small, there's no room to store things". Three hours of him hauling shit-covered belongings into my yard the cleanup work began. Fun bonus: one of the objects was a full 20lb bag of dog food to feed the "rat infestation from the neighbors sorry it's incurable".

100% accurate call, and a good warning to all.
