You can, anyone can do it, just depends on how accurate you want to be and how long you want to be learning. There is a lot of shit to learn, construction methods (for ALL areas of a building), materials, standards, local, state and country codes, standards and regulations. When being a drafter you have to sort of be a jack of all trades but a master of none, you have to know the basics in every aspect of a building so that you can roughly design it right, but then you hand it off to someone that knows the details.

I'm Australian so what I say will probably be different for where ever you live, but here there is the Australian Standards (details on how things need to be built, very specific things) the National Construction Code (more generalised on how things need to be built) then there are legislations and council regulations which all depend on where you are building, these things will guide your design and give you the limitations you need to make up a building and can be viewed for free online.

The easiest way to get into this is probably take a short course, again in Australia we have a thing called TAFE, you can do a 2 year night course that will teach you all of the basics you need to design structures.

If you're just doing it by yourself at home, if you want them to be accurate designs in any way, it's going to take years of learning.

I'd suggest something like SketchUp as a jumping off point.

It's very fast and fairly intuitive, very easy to make a quick mock up of your idea. You can also export projects to your desired CAD file format for further editing and revising, rendering, etc.

I'd also suggest not using ArchiCAD... AutoCAD's been on the Mac for a few years now, no point in settling.

There are plenty of good online books and video tutorials. I highly recommend watching video tutorials and learning how pros utilize their work space, work flow, hot key configurations, etc.

It makes a huge difference in creativity, speed, and legibility. If you ever plan to plot your designs, I'd research it first. There are a lot of nuances when plotting, fighting with line weights, etc. A lot of it is trial and error.

Buy an auger bit file and do it by hand.
I clamp mine in a wood vise
If you are too lazy to by the correct file, then at least get one with safe edges.
Will only take a few strokes of the file to make it sharp.

Brad points are really difficult. Even our sharpening company fails on them.

Perhaps a chain saw file? Or a Dremel, it's not an easy geometry.

In the future try to avoid using them unless you know for certain you won't hit anything metal.

For reference, this is what I've been using lately. the removable pouches are quite nice, but the picture is misleading as the pack doesn't hold its shape at all unless it is packed full of clothes or something else soft. Anything hard or just empty space will make it collapse or deform and I'm tired of it. Hence why I'm interested in making something with a light frame.

I dont know how rigid you want it, but maybe some plastic folders are firm enough to keep your pack "in shape."

But honestly, I'd just make it without the frame, and add one later if you're really still needing one. If you pack it right, you won't even miss the frame

besides that, I'd say fiberglass rods, and epoxy them together for your frame shape, keeps the weight down and bulkyness.

idk what you mean by an internal frame tho. if you where talking about something like two pieces of flat aluminum stock, running up an down, boy are you in luck.

Cut two pieces of the total length of your pack. and you can just take two pieces of fabric and put em on each side, and sew the aluminum flat stock into the backpack. TAD-DA! or if you want it removable. sew some straps on the inside to slide the frame rails into.

don't over complicate things too much, while I understand your excited to start this project, too much to learn too quickly will quickly make you just give up on it.

for the basics: frame some walls, attach to slab, screw on some hinges and a board for a door, add sheathing outside, attach roof rafters with brackets, lay roof sheathing, put down some shingles

if you wanted electrical, insulation, windows, etc. that would take more doing

I think Matlab is dogshit, but that's not because of a lack of power or features, just because it looks god awful and the syntax is fucking assbackwards and has no consistency.

But it's incredibly powerful, and well supported. And seems to be fairly fast.


I dont think you can compare something like Matlab to Python, they're completely different. I much prefer Python as a language for its syntax, but Matlab just has the tools you need without having to go out and find a Python library for it.

My uni course has added Matlab as standard for the first time this year, it's pretty neat but I'm yet to see the full use of it really only being a first year. Interested to see how we use it in the next 5 years though and it's definitely preferable to the stuff I used in high school!

Your other options involve using energy to heat them.

It's a profession full of hacks as well as super craftsmen. Customer wise full of wack jobs and serious user/collectors. If you are a top machinist and know your shit inside out you will attract the serious clientele and do OK. If you buy a lathe and mill and take a 2 week course you are going to be up against a pile of shitty competition competing for shitty clients.

If you really like guns and really like precision machining, and are willing to put in a few years to learn and gain experience, you could do OK. It's not easy or big money though, even if you're ace and find good work.

Check and read the gunsmithing forum at Practical Machinist to get an idea what's involved in the work.

If you're good at the stocking side there is work in muzzle loaders, meaning flintlocks. It'll take years of a few rifles a year to build a name and customer base to the point you can do it for a living, but the legalities aren't nearly as involved. And you need to be very good. The whack job customers, like on /k/, will make you shake your head in disbelief if you go with modern firearms.
