...But I don't have trillions of dollars. I have just under ten grand put aside for projects that I could blow on the attempt.

But then I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phj3lLEtWlk

Some guys trapped a huge bubble of air underwater using transparent sheet vinyl, netting, nylon cord and welded octagonal restraining rings. It's tied to boulders on the bottom to keep it from floating.

That's when I got to thinking, that looks like a tent. About the same size as tents I see homeless in around here.

Now it would be a trick to convince them to live underwater, to be sure. Risking their lives. But I know what would motivate them.

I can't talk about it due to board rules but I could set aside some funds to set up a lab to make more and dole it out to them ON THE CONDITION that they live full time underwater. Let's call it Adam.

I estimate $1,000 for each bubble. I can afford to build 8 of them at that cost, setting aside $1,000 for the air compressors and hosing needed to supply continuouse fresh air and another $1,000 to get started manufacturing "Adam".

Thoughts?

Ur retarded. Ten grand can have you a really nice car. U can buy some shell for like a grand. And the rest of it can be go fun parts. You watch sales/deals and learn some skills. Easy pz. Won't be any super car. But if you can get like 3500lbs with like 450ish WHP. U can have tons of fun.

Do you understand the amount of pressure that is under more than twenty feet of water?
>>
>>1014012
love it, i wanna try it. my only concern is air exchange, sure you can maintain a pressure, but that doesnt mean you can maintain oxygen levels. id like to try something like a 25' diameter build in a large lake and try to get some plants in there see how they last

Can I modify a cheap current clamp to have a bigger resolution? (example, from 1A to 200A, to 0.1A to 600A)?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1013770
Short answer: no.
You /can/ get a low ratio current transformer (try EBay) and run the secondary through your meter. You'll add a small amount of error to your reading, but it's really the only way.
>>
>>1013786
Also, the problem with CTs is they take a certain amount of energy to excite. This means that if you use a 3:1, 600A CT (to read 600A on your 200A meter) it might not be able to give you a reading at 0.1A and if it did there error would be huge because your meter is going to see 0.03A So you'd be better off getting a higher accuracy low current meter for that.

Thanks a lot dude, this really helps, I guess it's time to buy a new clamp haha.

Hey. I'm trying to re-use stepper motors from CD/DVD drives. After I soldered the wire to the tiny PCB tab, the tab came off : I can now see the insides of the stepper motor. I want to know how to find the 4 wires back in there so I can use the motor. What would be the solution ? The green part is the part wish got removed
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I also just want to point out that the whole assembly is important, including the stepper motor, and it would be quite difficult to replace the motor.
>>
If the green part was removed then it is almost impossible to get it working again. As the wires inside of them steppers are tiny, but you could be able to find them, there should be four ends that you need. Connecting them to another wire would be the difficuit part. The thing I would suggest is trying to unwrap one revolution so you have some room to work.
>>
>>1013030
Find a new drive. Better yet, buy actual steppers. Those motors are very, very weak.

Hey /diy/,

I just moved from an apartment to a house, and I can no longer use a door-mounted pull up bar because they fuck up your doorframes, and I would like to keep my brand new house looking nice.

That being said, I started looking around for a floor mounted pull up bar. It can't be too expensive, right? Fucking wrong. The cheapest ones I can find are like $100. So that's bullshit right? It's just a few metal bars, how hard could it be to make one myself.

So I'd like to ask you guys: what would the most economical, yet functional way to make my own pull up or bodyweight bar like pic related be?

Could I get away with making this thing out of PVC? Would it support a 150lb guy? Let me know what you think. Also, I can't weld and have no equipment to do so, so that's kind of out.
36 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>1011251
PVC isn't suitable for that. Use dimensioned lumber and nuts/bolts. 2x4s for the verticals and base, 2x2s for diagonal braces. Steel round bar would be best for the grip bar itself.
>>
You could make one easy like your pic, which isn't mounted, it's free standing, out of dimensional lumber and black iron pipe.

If that's not ridgid enough, I can think of a very solid design using those materials, would probably cost about $60 at the most.

PVC probably won't work. It flexes, and it's lightweight, you want something heavy to work against your movements so it doesn't rock or tip.
>>
>>1011261
Thinking about it though, if it's going to work as well as it needs to and you price materials to be less than $50 in savings I'd just buy the pre made one, it'll likely work better in the long run

I got bit and found one, searched entire apartment, can't find any more. I suspect that they're coming in from a neighbor. Bought some caulk today to seal up the gaps. Gonna buy some kind of spray and fogger too. Anybody have exp with this? What spray works best?
55 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
the sprays you can buy as an unlicensed user are mostly useless unless you actually find one and spray it directly. foggers are the same. you can take some preventative steps like diatomaceous earth powder around your bed legs, moving bed away from wall, etc etc - there are entire web sites devoted to this evil. but, ultimately, what's gonna work is some powerful sprays from an exterminator doing the whole building, then coming back in 3 weeks to to it again to kill anything that's hatched since.
>>
How easily do these turn into an infestation?

I found 3 hatched eggs in the seams of my bed, and managed to kill one that bit me later that night.

Haven't seen any others around the house , nor have they bit my while I sleep, this happened like 3 weeks ago.

Could an infestation be brewing while I ignore it?
>>
Once you get them, you'll spend months or years getting rid of them.

Harder than flees.

Try this:

Throw away anything that they may be hiding in/on that you can't reach, like a couch.

Hunt them down, check wood, they like wood, and they generally like to be within 2 metres of where you sleep--usually very close to where you sleep.

Then set a perametre of diotomacheous earth around you, make it impossible for them to reach you without stepping in the dust.

Using yourself as bait, they will cross the dust and dyhydrate themselves from microscopic cuts.

After a month or two of this, they should be gone--but if live in an apartment, your neighbours bed bugs might migrate to you again starting the cycle all over again.

Hope this helps--I nearly killed myself because of these fuckers.

It is also not a field where wild ambition (by self-inflicted first-timer) is advisable. Post photo head.

I made an Arduino temperature and humidity logger, left it outside for a couple of days and graphed results using excel

1x Arduino nano
1x Micro SD card reader
1x 32Gb micro SD (overkill but it's what i have)

Hello /diy/, I come to you for help/Google-Fu.

The house I bought doesn't have a garage. I know, big failure on my part. But, the rest of the house is what I needed, and the price was right.

The house does have a space for a garage, in fact a poured concrete pad that was done 2 years ago. I haven't investigated if it's a fully reinforced slab, or if it's just an above ground pour. I'll investigate that and cross that bridge later. Regardless, it's a 22' deep x 24' wide slab.

Here's what I need from you. I know how to frame, shingle, run electrical... Bu what I don't know, is how much of what I need. Yes I know I need some pressure treated, some standard 2x4, OSB, siding of some sort, shingles, prefab trusses...But HOW MUCH? I'd prefer 10', but 8' walls will work. This is in MN, so 16" OC studs, 24" OC trusses. Not that it matters now, but yes I'll be hanging drywall and insulating as I'll run gas/electric/cable+data out to it.

TL;DR. Building 22'dx24'wx8'h, need parts qty list/generator website.

Not even trying to be a dick, but either Home Depot or Lowe's (and probably any lumber yard for that matter) will help you do that math if you take in just a rough drawing. They'll probably cut you a deal on the stuff too, like maybe 10% off if you order it then. Not sure about how easy it would be to return what you don't use.

While not officially Jewish, I'm just wondering if I can get the supplies cheaper if I go in with a shopping list instead of buying their kit

So I've got an old motorcycle I want to chop, and I really like the way people molded and warped the tanks and fenders together with fiberglass. Before I get too far into this, does anyone here have any experience with this sort of thing? I was hoping eventually I could get to making things like costume props and selling them for cash, things like helmets and weapons.

Fridge has worked fine for a little over a year, since I got it new.

I come in to work and find the compressor buzzing louder than it usually does.

Think OK, I just need to defrost it and get rid of all that ice that has accumulated in the freezer.

Do this and wipe it out dry and such, plug it back in. Seems to work fine.

For the next the 3 days I never hear it turn off the compressor like its supposed to. I say, well there must be an inordinate amount of heat associate with this.

Sure enough, I reach my hand back there and feel immense heat coming from the compressor. I even touched it and got a first degree burn.

The fucks going on here? Its unplugged until I can figure this out. Nothing was in the fridge the last 3 days.

Also, all that heat was going right into the fridge, so maybe it was an endless loop of trying to cool the interior but couldn't so it worked continuously?

Pic related, is the fridge in question.

>>
>>1016051
The receiver/filter in the *freon loop is probably clogged and the compressor is just pumping against the blockage causing the high temp.
The inside is hot because it gets no cooling and the heat from the compressor is transferred to the inside.
These units are cheap and repair would be more than the cost of a new one.
>>
>>1016051
There are a few basic reasons why a compressor would overheat.
The big problem is, in HVAC you can break down a system and fix it easily.

Even if you did figure out exactly what the cause was, you arent going to break down and repair a fridge like this. All of the issues are internal problems, like bad oil or low freon, or a bad valve or anything like that causing high head pressure.

You dont have the tools to do it, and hourly work from someone who does will cost as much as a new fridge.

Thanks guys, appreciate the insight. It does cool somewhat but has clearly faulted in a serious manner.

I think I paid $49 for it new and it lasted me a little over a year, for a no name brand I suppose that's acceptable.

I certainly won't be able to do anything about fixing it so I suppose I'll dispose of it and get another.

so im trying to create this metal yoyo (the old ones broke). and i figured id keep it simple, and use water pipes (2x 2cm). but i need something to rest the string on, cant be a rectangular shape in the middle, it has to be a coneical or it would be imbalanced. any ideas? i got most tools availeble but the lathe is out of order
