I'm thinking of setting up a small Aquaponics system using a 3 gallon tank that looks much like the picture posted.
I'll be using this guys system . https://youtu.be/
Do you guys have any hints or have your own system you wanna share?

You also pasted the link without the actual video code. Personally, I find anything under 55 gallons to be too small to properly maintain balance. The smaller the amount of water the quicker things can go wrong.

21 year old guy here.

How do I learn how to do things like this? How do I learn to create things and repair? I have no father figure and never learned these things. What tools should I have, where should I begin? What kinds of projects should I start with?

Thank you for all advice!

I don't know dude, about repairs, take something easy to take apart and clean it, like a Super Nintendo controller, then slowly go for more complex stuff. If you are looking to learn how to make stuff, just find something you think is cool, like knifes for example, and go make some, watch how-to youtube videos and tutorials. Some tools I would recomend for general pourposes are: protection glasses, an angle grinder, a dremel, files, sandpaper, 10 minute epoxy glue, a drill and lots of scrap parts.
>>
at your age i was in the same situation. get a screwdriver and take things apart. what would you like to do?
- electronics? go look for kits at aliexpress and get whatever strikes your fancy and the basic tools you'll need. cheap soldering iron and solder, some snips. buy the cheapest stuff, if you'll like it you'll soon figure out which things you'll need.
- wood stuff? get some wood, make a box, look for tutorials.
- music? take apart a guitar, an amp, whatever you get your hands on.

- go to a flea market/garage sale, get anything you want to know about take it apart, google it.

i understand you'd like to know everything at once, but you'll soon find stuff that will interest you more that other things, you'll find what you'll find more fun to learn more about. if you don't know what you want, try to get the cheapest shit, tools... at that age you can't afford to go for quality whey you're asking a question like this.

>things like this?

>What kinds of projects should I start with?
the obvious answer would be things that need repair

Hello /diy
pic related to my question, they say on the product page that this amp requires a 13.5V 3A power supply for "optimal results"
I have a similar 25W amp that I power with a simple 12V 1A power supply and it works just fine.
Does it really make that much of a difference if I use the 13.5V 3A supply?
or a 12V 2A would be just as good?

why does it work with 1A when it requires "25W"

I will plug 2 HiFi speakers that were literally dumped behind my house, like under the rain, I could salvage the stereo because by the time I took those inside som1 else already got the stereo system...

You can underpower drivers and not hurt them. They just wont get as loud as they are capable of. Its not a flat scale though. A driver designed for 3 amps wont sound 1/3rd as loud if you only give it 1 amp. It will probably sound quite a bit softer compared to a 3 amp power source and the same volume level.

I've got a set of 125 watt speakers and they sound great even though my amp only puts out 75 watts a channel. The amp gives them what it can and they take it because they are a passive device. They aren't like electronics or something. Where you can blow up your power supply if you put a device with a 3 amp draw on a 1 amp source.

Waddup /diy/nosaurs!

I've gotten an idea for this summer. I plan on doing a stag (probably only the head) out of branches, so far I've found two nice branches will I use as the antlers. Question is what should I use as the "skull"? Wire, crambled up paper, lots of twigs, maybe? Also, should I use hot glue/wood glue to keep shit together? I want it to look as rustic as possible but I am not as artsy as I would like.

Hi /diy/, I'm back again with more boat repair problems.

In the process of cutting out the floor, I finally accepted that the only way to get all of it out and do the best job possible is to pry the cap off. Fast forward to today: rub rail is off, rivets out, adhesive around the sides cracked. The bow and sides came up easy, but the transom area of the cap refuses to budge. I have removed all the putty, cracked all the glue behind the splashwell, etc, and still it refuses to pop off. What the hell am I doing wrong?

Pic is what I'm working with.

Just a shot in the dark.

The steering cable could provably be running through a hull support?

I notice it is pretty much off on port and not budged from starboard.

Remove all cleats and other auxiliaries if they are bolted or screwed on.

The hull doesn't have to be built symmetrically.

Grab a friend and let him do the gentle prying and you then feel along the starboard side while he is "massaging" it and you will feel where the fiber glass is flexing due to resistance.

It could also just be that the cap is on fucking tight and you need to pry from the other side.

I have a collection of drum sticks that I want to make a "frame" for. I want to to make a circular shape with sticks pointing outward, problem is I don't know how to make the sticks stay in place without anything visibily doing so. Any ideas? Pic not related

Drill a small hole in to the bottom of each stick. Place the stick vertical on a flat piece of wood. Use a screw to go from the bottom of the wood, through the flat surface, and in to the bottom of the drum stick.
>>
That could work, thanks
>>
>>1015996
Drill bit the size of each stick, drill in enough so that each stick fits snug. You'll probably only need 3 bits at most. Use epoxy in the hole to hold them in place.

situation:

I live with my family in an apartment building that supplies AC in the summer and heat in winter via the same central radiator unit(s). My bedroom happens to be a small extension of the building probably not to code, with it's own unit, tapped off my brothers room next door in what used to be facing the exterior, now walled off (definitely not to code). And, because it's walled off entirely, my brother resorts to using a combination of ceiling fan and cold humidifier to fight off the inevitable hotbox his room turns into during the winter, with no ventilation and the hot pipes running to my room, so I don't freeze. Now he also uses some kind of weight on top of some aluminum foil to try and dissipate the heat rising from his radiator, but I was wondering, even if it's silly, if there is some sort of thing I can build, a well designed heat sink of some kind, that would improve upon this. Ideally it would be compact and be able to sit upon the radiator.

Something as simple as a plastic jug full of water might work (dumping out the water when it gets warm and replacing it with cool water).
>>
>>1015891
>some kind of weight on top of some aluminum foil to try and dissipate the heat rising from his radiator,
Are you, perchance, trying to make the radiator cooler by dissipating its heat into the room while wondering why the room becomes so hot?

>Ideally it would be compact and be able to sit upon the radiator.
It's called blanket. Throw it on top of the radiator to stop it from heating the room.

I have a monitor on which the power supply has failed, tryed repairing it and still keeps burning resistor so I give up, and its not in the monitor circuitry cause its separated via small transformer, which is driven somehow, that differs from linear power supplies MONITOR IS RATED FOR ABOUT 30W

Now what Im gonna do is build a completelly new power supply to substitute voltages that should be 1.3 V
6 V
14 V
45 V
70V
all should be AC,now I can use common power transformers except maybe for 45 and 70 Volts, what would be the easiest to get these votlages ??

with a transformer.
>>
>>1015851

yes but 70V is not a common output on transformers like 12V is , the highest I have is a 50V one

also wiring my own or have it down would cost too much, can i use a circuit doubler, or maybe a power resistor droping ?

50V + 20V = ?

Blowtorch, the metal threads around it heat up and expand more than the screw does.

Take a flathead screwdriver and tap it lightly with a hammer until it makes a dent in the screw head, then unscrew it.

>Mr relationship: tl;dr version
Tragic. But I still want to give her something before she moves outside of the country to Mormon-land. The idea I have is to make a bunch of flowers, attach them to a natural-looking and elegant structure and fit it all inside a metal tea box.
The flowers are the easy part
>http://www.instructables.com/id/Copper-Rose/
What I have problems with is designing is the wire structure. I have many ideas and need a few more people to think this trough. I could make an Art-Noveau style for the wires and attach many things to it:
>British pounds (Half of her family is from Britain)
>Broken clock mechanism with many shinny pars inside
>Cheap earrings with fake Second Mexican Empire coins
Any help?

This brings me to my first question:
>What is the best way of removing the paint from a soda can?
I used a drill with a stone attached the last time, but there has to be another way
>>
>>1015640
Wire wheel would be faster
An angle grinder would be more appropriate than a drill
Sand paper flapper wheel or ball wpuld also work.
Just some sandpaper
acetone or some other solvent depends entirely on what they painted it with.

We just bought our first home, and while getting the HVAC vents cleaned the technician managed to fuck up some paint near the vent. My husband pulled off all the loose paint, but pic related remains. The question is: does he remove this really stuck on paint before repainting, or is it okay just to paint over it?

>>
Use a paint scraper to take off anything loose, paint over the rest.
>>
>>1015607
Thank you, that's exactly what I needed to know.
>>
>>1015597
>My husband pulled off all the loose paint,

Judging from the pic, I'd suspect that is not just paint and your husband removed the loose texture sprayed on the ceiling.
The texture around the vent may become loose due to humidity / condensation associated with the cold air.
If the ceiling was textured before painting you'll need to apply a matching texture to the bare area before repainting.
You should also try to make the repairs with an irregular line relative to the rest of the ceiling.
A rectangle repair will be more obvious.

Hey /diy/ first time posting here, I want to build a classic wooden chest, but I'm new to woodworking so I need some dirt cheap materials to build a few "practice" pieces. Are shipping pallets made of sturdy enough wood for this? Max weight I'd put in it 100ibs.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1015580
You need to watch where you get your pallets
A lot of them have some pretty awful chemicals on them
if you get them from places that ship food on them you should be pretty safe
>>
>>1015606
This guy is right, however pallets have specific stamps on them that indicate how they were made/where they're from. You just want the one's that aren't chemically treated, which are easy to find if you can read the codes

http://www.1001pallets.com/pallet-safety/
>>
>>1015580
Most pallets will be strong enough for what you have in mind, as has been stated by >>1015606 and >>1015650 you should try to get pallets that are as clean as possible, not knowing you location I can only tell you what works for me, I typically look for free pallets in industrial areas, some big box stores will also have pallet "graveyards" just ask, another tip I can give you is to look for places that have large machinery deliveries as these will often be made on oversized pallets, and check out places that have shipments of steel as the wooden baulks they use under the loads tend to be made of dense heavy hardwoods, I've found some rather exotic woods this way.

Good luck anon

Any sewers here? I want to make a hat like this but can't find any real patterns online. I think i have a general idea.

Im planning on using coyote, my grandfather took a couple last year on his property and had their pelts tanned, and he's letting me have them. He wanted to make a Crockett hat for himself but his hands are just bad enough that he can't handle the sewing. I found a pattern for that one no problem.

So what im thinking based off the crockett pattern to make mine, is to first cut a round top. A front band for the forehead about 4" wide. Two ear pieces 4"wide by 10" long, and a panel for the back of the head 6"wide and however long to get around the hat.

Also trying to figure out what to use for the liner?whats normally used?

Any ideas?

Can't wait to do something like this when I go hunting.
>>
Google for "bomber hat pattern"
>>
>>1015325
Also if you're not familiar with patterns, they generally make suggestions for what fabric to use as a liner. Typically the fur is the liner for this type of hat, but you're flipping it for aesthetics. I'd line it in a flannel I think.
