Greetings earthlings,
I was thinking about asking /biz/ about this but /diy/ is where my heart is at.
I am currently looking for a company that can produce a prototype of a plastic part i designed.
I dont fully understand how they calculate their prices and how much of a hassle it is to produce the moulds and setup the machine to produce a specific object.
My prototype being a tube like object and bigger than 30cm ( its like 40x40x40 ) already excludes a lot of companies.
Also the chinese companies i talked with say they keep owning the mould which i dont like at all.
They want a monthly guaranteed purchase which i cant guarantee at all because its a fucking prototype and i dont know how the market would receive it and if it works at all.
Do you guys have experience with moulds and plastic production?

Why would anyone make a dildo nowadays? That market already offers any kind of genital from various creatures.
>>1028569
Does it need to be one piece?
You can't really just go out to a manufacturer asking for a single item.
If it isn't too detailed or strong, you could vacuform it.
Other than that, the only thing that comes to mind is lost wax/PLA casting. Or, if you have the plans you could ask for the cost of having it milled in some cheap aluminum, machineable plycarbonate, or acetal.
Hey,
some faggot scratched my car today. I need to hide it somehow, with a sticker, paint or whatever comes up. I don't have artistic skills, so what would you suggest?
Also I don't have much money for this.
btw, I'm not sure it is international but where I live this symbol stands for pussy.

>I'm not sure it is international but where I live this symbol stands for pussy.
Never seen it before.
Hey, at least he did it on a panel that was already damaged
>>1028511
usualy drawn like that, pretty common
indeed he did, but still...
spray paint?
tape off the affected area
sand it down
get spray paint that kinda matches
layer it on 3 coats maybe?
clear coat?
I am looking for drawings of outdoor speaker systems of rather bigger size (2xspeakers, 1xsub with ~1kW power in total), but all I've found are living room style casings. Does anyone have a website in mind?
i will bump that one

Any of you ever silver solder parts to your rifle barrel?
i removed the 3 blade sight from my Ruger Mini 14 (new heavy barrel design), and i want to fill the ugly roll pin channel left in the barrel. I picked up a 1/8" dia. hardened steel rod to fill it, propane torch and a roll of silver bearing acid core solder.
im no expert at this sort of thing by any stretch of the imagination, but Larry Potterfield makes it seem pretty easy. ill do a test first of course, probably solder a couple old wrenches together or something like that.
My main concern is, of course, the integrity of the barrel and the effect this will have on the accuracy.
Any thoughts or advice? Anybody ever do this?
And yes this does belong in /k/, but everybody over there is too busy wanking it camo trucker hats to get involved
I suggest you visit real gun forums, not /k/ which isn't anything at all. 4chan forums are just ways to find real resources and should NEVER be a first resort. They are only a substitute for Google.
Practical Machinist is an outstanding website. Gunsmithing is nothing more than specialty machining and fabrication, so many machinists work on firearms. Naturally a machinist does far more machining than a gunsmith, and brazing and soldering and welding are skills nearly all machinists possess because we need them.
Try "silver soldering gunsmithing site:www.practicalmachinist.com" and similar search strings.
There are many posts, this may help:
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/gunsmithing/silver-soldering-what-am-i-doing-wrong-126721/
I suggest you duplicate the job you want to do as closely as practical on some prepared practice parts with similar clearances to your weapon. Because solder may be melted off, the part prepped again, and the job repeated, you can try multiple times until you are certain of success. Solder melts at much lower temps than would affect steel which is why gunsmiths use it.
Have fun! Hard soldering is a useful skill.

nice resource, thanks!

Get a fucking muzzle brake, you're guranteed to fuck up the barrel. You're talking about brazing, not soldering and brazing temps will soften steel and likely warp the barrel.
I have no experience with working on electronics.
Essentially I want a normal functioning wireless phone with answering machine. However I want to intercept the incoming sound signal and process it and then display processed results on a screen.
Is it possible for a layperson? Should I modify an existing phone or build a new one? Do you have recommendations on the hardware or tutorials/books I should be looking at?

A degree in electronics design would be a big benefit.

Random thoughts....
,,,There is already Android apps that can record both sides of calls, on most phones. Apparently some carriers block this ability. I don't know more than that about the subject really....
,,,But that means that you can write your own app to record calls, and then do something with that recording. Like, send the file to a web address (if your phone has internet) or send it to an address on a particular wifi or bluetooth hotspot at home (to automatically send it directly to your home PC)....
,,,Android Studio is the name of the program you use to write Android apps on. It is a free download from Google. If you have an iPhone then I dunno, I don't know shit about Apple stuff. But I'd bet iPhones can do call recording too, and it is my understanding that you can write your own iPhone apps and install them to devices directly (that you can physically access). Unsigned apps just won't install over the internet.
,,,I don't know what you mean when you say that you want the call "processed"? Do you mean you want it translated to text? Or something else?........ I can (kinda) program PC and android apps but I dunno how to do low-level voice-to-text. I guess there might be a open library for it somewhere tho.
Threw a roll of paper towels at my mom and missed badly and hit the lamp on the ceiling. It then fell and shattered in a million pieces. I probably should fix it now, how do I go about doing it? I don't even know how it goes up there. Any ideas?
Also, why do you even need lamp covers?

I've spent about 7 or 8 years doing residential construction, and I'm finally looking to buy my own home.
However, the price tag of something like a house absolutely boggles my mind, and I can't help but feel like I could build a house for something like 1/3rd of the price.
Is this a viable alternative to buying a home? Purchasing a plot of land and simply doing what I already do at work only on my own dime?
It depends on who you are and if you are up for it.
I work in building maintenance and run a landscaping business on the side (primarily hard and softscape implementation.) and while I love it as my job I hate doing that shit in my free time. My property is a wreck but my work is top notch.
Da fuck? Why do they have the finished treads and risers exposed at that stage of construction? Apparently in OP's pic's world drywallers or plasterers don't creampie the whole house
>>1027938
You CAN build a house for about 1/3 the price you'd pay for one. That's how contractors make money anon: they do the hard work that they know how to do and most others don't, then charge for their time doing it. The trick is to figure out how to do those things yourself, then have local and state authorities recognize that you're competent at them.
What's the best way to go about painting plastic again?
1.) Rough sand with rough grit sandpaper
2.) Continue to sand with finer grit sandpaper until all blemishes are gone
3.) Wash thoroughly and let dry
4.) Spray primer in multiple thin coats minutes apart from each other.
5.) Wait until fully cured (in Rustoleum's case, after 49 hours - fuuuuuuck)
6.) Sand primer until smooth
7.) Spray prime again(????)
8.) Wait until fully cured again(????)
9.) Then spray paint with colors. Multiple thin coats, yadda yadda
I just finished priming, and I'm worried about running low on time. Do I follow #6 only if the dried primer has a rough, sandy texture? If so, if I sand it, do I just do a really fine grit sandpaper and be done with it, or do I have to follow up with a whole other new coat of primer, which will set me back at least 2 more days?
Things to consider: I've spent a lot of time on steps 1 and 2 alone. I spent way too long on those two steps that I'm actually kind of sick of sanding.
What's the best way to clear coat a finished paint job? I've used Rustoleum product sprays, but I want to protect it from fairly heavy use.
I think I'm going to need multiple coats, more than what I imagine their (triple thick) clear coat would give me.
Something clear, protective, and high-shineable. What do?
I'm spray painting a helmet using Rustoleum primer and paint (flat white). I've got waterslide decals I want to apply as well (which will be sealed with krylon acrylic spray before wetting).
Now I want to be able to have this helmet be usable and take a beating, and not yellow over time either. What would be the best course of action?
I know something about applying x, then doing something with a rubbing compound, and then finishing it up with a car polish like Meguires. But I don't know what to use for x to get the end result.
There's a Rustoleum glazing spray with a pic of a glazed pottery piece on the label. Anyone have experience with that?
I definitely want to give this thing a nice gloss coat which sounds probably need sanding and polishing. If that were the case, I might need more than one can. I just don't know what's best over Rustoleum.
Google has turned into a shitpool of who spent the most money to be the top spot on the page.
Do enthusiast/hobby forums even exist anymore? Everything is from like 2009.
I have a Lithium-Ion battery pack (HBJ-12V) that takes 12.6VDC in and spurts out anything between 10.8V - 12.6V DC. Also I have a foldable solar cell thingie which gave 1V - 11.75VDC when I measured it here indoors, near the window.
I want to recharge the battery pack with the solar thingie while I'm playing Pokey Man's Goe. What should I put between them?

You need some manner of switching mode boost converter to raise the solar panel's output voltage to the appropriate charging voltage (which will be provided by the manufacturer).
You will also need to limit the current going to the battery so that you do not overcharge/damage the battery.
I don't know how much of this will be handled by the battery itself because you did not link any information on the battery itself.
how do i make my own solar panels? like the panels themselves?
>>1029229
you don't
There's a good reason they make them in factories that have a floor area in multiple football fields, even in China.
So I was cleaning my old shelf and found like 24 CDs (74min/650mb). What do I do with it?

Hey guys.
I have a question.
I am a 3d modeller but I want to sell a few figurines.
I know I could 3d print my models but the quality is just down the gutter.
So, is there some way I could give my 3d model and they make it into a figurine? Like someone or some company or something?
>>1027840
you mean 3d printing companies?
3d printing will be the cheapest way unless you are making 10000000s of them
>>1027840
Yeah, you could do that but you'd lose profit. Get some molds printed instead and do it the old fashioned way.
>>1027840
hand sculpt it or wait for that new in color 3d printing process by HP to come out.
You could try using an objet color 3d printer which has awesome print quality. Compared to Z-corp machines at least. It's fucking expensive though.
I'd say at the very least try out MCOR's color 3d printing(pic related) and post process your prints by dipping them in cyanoacrylate. It's cheap.(compared to other 3d printing processes or hiring a professional sculptor)
Does anybody have any ideas what I could make with about 50 empty 2 liter bottles? I looked online and only found projects for individual bottles. Keep in mind I'm too dumb to build a boat/raft out of them. Thanks in advance.
You could cut them into thin strips, braid the strips together, and tie the resulting rope into a noose

Hey /diy/, Ive got an easy one for you guys. Me and my lady just moved into a new apartment where there's less than a ton of space. Me and all my old buddies like to LAN, but my current digs just dont have the space for that kind of a setup. Enter: The LAN-tron 9000.
See, my livingroom is dominated by a recliner couch up against the wall, and I was thinking of making some use of the non-reclining middle section. The plan goes like this: mount armatures similar to the one on my trusty desk lap behind the section, then attach two 24" monitors to them. When we wanna LAN, we just pull them out and they hover in front of the two side seats while another person can play in the middle off the big TV opposite the couch. When not in use the monitors would stow behind the couch, as there is plenty of room behind the middle section to collapse both armatures with the monitors attached.
My question(s) to /diy/ in order of importance are:
1: Are you aware of any such armature that exists prefabricated, that is capable of holding up a 24" monitor (approx...5lbs/2kg?).
2: Is there any consistent and simple means of modifying an existing armature you are aware of to be up to the task?
3: If the answers to questions 1 and 2 are both "no", how hard would it be to build two such armatures from scratch, and what readily available parts would make this easier?
Pic related: my trusty lifelong desklamp, and its floaty armature (bonus points if you can tell me what this type of armature is called...)

What's a cheap, good looking material I can use like the boards in pic related.
I'd use acrylic but I don't want it to be clear. I'd like it to be white on both sides, somehow.
To clarify, I'm making something like that on my own, but I don't want to spend a lot of time or money on the board to make it look nice.
