Make sure you are cooking it right.

You can use various types of stock or soup bases, curry paste, or pic related. It depends on how you're going to serve it.

I don't really recommend using dry spices.

Mostly what you said though. Especially the expense. I prefer a product called Royale Montane that's only about $20/liter or Ferrand's Dry Curacao, which is pricey but still usually 10 bucks less than GM.
