>be 21 years old
>graduated college back in May
>have a job making $52k a year
>realize it's not great but it's better than anyone my age that I know personally
>save and invest my money
>budget myself
>never really enjoyed going out to bars and parties and shit
>all of my friends are fucking stupid when it comes to money
>when I tell them I invest my money they assume that means I'm super rich or have some secret inheritance or something

Does anyone else here know this feeling? I met my gf's coworker's boyfriend last night. The guy told me that he doesn't have a bank account and just uses prepaid visa card and check cashing services. I asked him why he would do something that stupid and he went off on a rant about how banks just want your money because of overdraft fees.

I guess I've just come to the conclusion that most people really are stupid. I work for a lending institution and I see loans every day that I can't understand why someone would agree to. They take out these high interest rate loans to buy that new car or whatever and then don't pay shit and destroy their credit. My job requires that I have access to our collection notes(I work in the fraud department, often times people don't even realize they've committed a crime and will admit to it when we call asking for money) and it's clear that these people have no idea what they were signing on.

Why /biz/, why is it that the majority of Americans are financially illiterate?

Also, where can I find people my age who aren't completely retarded when it comes to this shit? I feel like I can't even relate to my friends anymore.

They don't teach you shit in high school, and most parents are descended from people whose livelihood were ruined by improper use of the stock market (my parents are Baby Boomers).

I've discussed the stock market with my mother and she's like 'man you own a revolver you can play better odds giving that a spin and then putting it to your head'.

I don't have enough capital to stock market yet, but I know it's not THAT much of a crap shoot if you're careful.

Yes, I have the same frustrations as you OP. My friends admittedly don't have high incomes, but make enough to save a couple thousand dollars over a year. Instead they spend all of their discretionary income on video games, weed, alcohol, cigarettes, fast food, and other shit they don't need. Then they have the lack of self-awareness to complain about how poor they are and how Bernie Sanders is the answer to all of their problems. It's sad and pathetic. I have a background in finance and they come to me asking questions about budgeting and saving, and I tell them EXACTLY what they need to do (set aside an emergency fund; pay off high-interest debt first; open an IRA) but they never listen to me.

Some people seem determined to be victims.

Trust fund. Winning the lottery. Being exceptionally talented in something that can make you money working for yourself.

Other than that suck it up and work like rest of us or go live under a bridge

Find a rich man/woman/transgender/genderqueer to pay you for house keeping.

Housewives will claim that raising kids and cleaning a house is two full time jobs but it isn't.
>>
if you can actually make money trading, sure. but chances are you're no better than the ~95% of retail traders that never actually make anything close to what a mcdonalds worker makes and in fact loses. most of the individual traders you hear about that make real money got their start at an actual firm where they were trained by experienced professionals.

For years now people have been telling me to go into radio and voice acting. Friends, family, complete strangers, people at bars, and people on buses. What got me interested again is 3 complete strangers brought it up in the last week.

Not only that but some of them are literally begging me. Because if I don't do it I'm "wasting my talent". I don't know... just because I have a deep voice, I don't think that means I have the talent to voice act or have the ability to articulate myself professionally.

I have always mumbled my entire life and suffered from shyness. I think I even struggle to speak since I hardly opened my mouth my entire life and am naturally very quiet. My sister in law told me that I need to take courses to help me not speak in a monotone. I got two job offers in the past to voice act. One guy claimed to be with the video game industry, another with the animation industry. But I didn't trust them.

I was told I should sign up for voice123. But it costs 400 dollars a year, and it'd mean probably spending atleast 1000 dollars on a microphone. Should I take the risk? Can someone honestly tell me if this worth going into? I don't want to waste the money I saved up for nothing.

Yeah, someone told me this a couple days ago.

People tell me to become a chef because I like to cook, that doesn't mean it's a good idea or that the job will be what you expect. I know lots of cooks and it's not glamour and prestige, I tells ya.

So anyway this sounds like a skill you can develop on your own with some reading and attention, but whether it's worth pursuing is a different matter. How much money can you make? Deep voices can be hard to parse in noisy environments, is this an issue? Can you network on your own or is this an old boys' club, etc. Do some research on 1. if it's in demand, and 2. if it pays well enough to be worth the effort.

I suspect there are lots of people out there with good voices and they last for decades so I'd imagine this is a tough place to break into and actually make acceptable money at it.
>>
>>1007298
Yes, I agree.

I assume it's very hard to actually break into and you just need a lot of luck.

How can I become a special intellect agency person or an espionage spy that lives in like miami or something. I have a 2 year degree in criminal justice and a vocational criminal justice diploma for a 2 year course.

Is there a lie detector test? I haven't done anything illegal besides drugs but I've smoked crack, free based molly, snorted pills, done ecstasy, smoking weed and oils on a daily basis, and I drink a lot. I've also sold drugs but I didn't want to. I think I'd be perfect as an agent as I'm athletic, coordinated, smart fast thinking and organized, and I can shoot and drive cars good.

I found a boss who basically just wants to show up to work five days a week, not fire anyone who also shows up to work and doesn't cause trouble, and knows that it's WAY easier for her to just give everyone a good performance review.

My job requires absolutely zero mandatory socialization in or out of work, but I like my coworkers and boss so I don't feel bad about talking to them. Even the guy I don't like (he asks for specific hours in a job where we are specifically told to that we be ready to work any time) is fun to talk to. I hope he retires or gets a transfer so I can work some better shifts, but haters gonna hate.

Raises are practically mandatory, and we don't even have to pay for our own work equipment.

http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2007/04/intercourse-and-intelligence.php

Tyler Cowen quotes from a new study testing the relationship between grades and delayed sexual activity.

Last December I passed a paper along to Razib showing that high-school age adolescents with higher IQs and extremely low IQs were less likely to have had first intercourse than those with average to below average intelligence. (i.e. for males with IQs under 70, 63.3% were still virgins, for those with IQs between 70-90 only 50.2% were virgin, 58.6% were virgins with IQs between 90-110, and 70.3% with IQs over 110 were virgins)

In fact, a more detailed study from 2000 is devoted strictly to this topic, and finds the same thing: Smart Teens Don't Have Sex (or Kiss Much Either).

The team looked at 1000s of representative teens grades 7-12 in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and The Biosocial Factors in Adolescent Development datasets, both of which include an IQ test, and include detailed sexual experience questions ranging from hand-holding to intercourse. As with the other study there was a curvilinear relationship: students with IQs above 100 and below 70 were significantly less likely to have had intercourse than those in between. Also like the other study, they found teens with IQs ranging from 75 to 90 had the lowest probability of virginity (the authors note this is also the same IQ range where propensity towards crime peaks).

Depending on the specific age and gender, an adolescent with an IQ of 100 was 1.5 to 5 times more likely to have had intercourse than a teen with a score of 120 or 130. Each additional point of IQ increased the odds of virginity by 2.7% for males and 1.7% for females. But higher IQ had a similar relationship across the entire range of romantic/sexual interactions, decreasing the odds that teens had ever kissed or even held hands with a member of the opposite sex at each age.

Please educate me and finish the sentence in clear language. I have looked at multiple sources and failed to find an ending that doesn't immediately either move the goalposts or bring in new assumptions.

Household finances only have to account for the needs, wants, aspirations, values and ideology of a very very narrow demographic, i.e. the occupants of that house.
>>
>>1008301
>You can't compare the country's finances to a household's finances! They're fundamentally different because...

because your spending is my income, and my spending is your income. A household can reduce its expenditures. A society that collectively reduces its expenditures all at the same time will also collectively reduce its incomes by the exact same amount.
>>
>>1008317

I think I wasn't clear in my OP. By country I meant government pretty much, since the "you can't compare..." sentence in the OP always is used to justify higher taxation.

So your post right describes a closed system where everyone is spending currency X. Obviously, all spending = all expenditure. The government to household analogy describes non closed systems where debt can accumulate or decrease depending on the level of spending.

Could Bill Gates buy an aircraft carrier decked with fighter jets?
27 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
>>1007949

Assuming he could commission their construction or else convince the US to part with them?

It would cost ABOUT half of his net worth to build one, and then he'd have about 40 BIL to put multi million dollar fighter jets on it.
>>
>>1007949

The largest barrier to buying something is finding a seller, if the US takes a large enough hit then they'll probably auction one off.

Kind of like how that Mexican cartel bought a diesel conversion of a nuclear sub from the Russians. If he bills is as some kind of humanitarian mission there would probably be protests if he wasn't allowed.
>>
>>1007953

Their power plants are really good for providing humanitarian aid.

Just had Chipotle for the first time. Stuff was barely warm and frankly I'd rather have taco bell ranch locos tacos.

Can you people explain why people go crazy for this mediocre crap?

>>1007823
Because they market it as "healthy". There a huge health craze going on in the US and it has just began. It's why you see explosions of chains like Waba Grill which is just overpriced rice and protein. Trendy shit. Although Chipotle took a hit because of the recent news of unsafe food handling practices it should bounce back. Hell, look at all the bad press that Wendy's, McDonald's, and Weinershnitzel got and they are all big as ever.

Finally got myself a job guys, its a student job so i only make about 19 $/h im 20 years and still in college i get around 1716 $ a month after taxes - some of the money goes to rent and bills. So i have around 1124 $ when all my expenses are paid.
Now what would /Biz/ do.
- pay off my small student loan (4307 $)
- Save money for a car (Could really use one)
- Invest my money each month
Or is there an option im not aware of?

Buy a cheap car if it helps your every day. I would prolly just a get somewhat new small car with a small engine so you dont have to worry repairs.

Depends what rate you have but student loans are usually cheaps so you might not want to hurry with that. Just leave it there and some day pay it off.

1124 after expenses you should be just fine. Have fun.
