This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I thought /biz/ might be depressing because I'd see people more successful than me. The reality is that its depressing because I see people who are so beneath me in terms of awareness of what entails good money / good career advice, I now worry that there may exist people who similarly surpass me in terms of awareness by many orders of magnitude and i'm too stupid to see it.

>College is a scam

Said by people with sub 2300 SATs / sub 3 As at A level who then go to podunk state to study business administration while taking out $30k loans

>Trades make big money / nursing makes big money / Just go and work on a rusty offshore platform in the middle of an ocean / the Albertan oil pits / the Mongolian carbon monoxide, asbestos, and cyanide mining industry

Someone who is similar to the above or, more pitiably, was in such a low social class that they don't realise that, for most people, going in to a trade would entail dropping a few social classes. Who the fuck wants to marry a fat wife ffs?! Why would I want to risk my back / fingers / lungs everyday at work? People represented by the above two green texts think that anything more mentally taxing than counting with fingers is jewish witchcraft

>Making big money is easy, just go and get [this specific degree] and [this specific masters] and [this specific PhD] and apply for [this one obscure job that requires that specific academic path and which is only offered by a few companies]

In a way this is the extreme opposite of the previous two. Instead of a rejection of academia, it goes in the comically opposite extreme. Due to various factors, it is a better route than becoming a paper clip welder, with more optionality, but it's still very stupid. Why the fuck would going through a 5 - 8 year path for one job seem appealing? Don't these people realise that most graduate jobs let people with almost any degree apply? Why do Oxford and harvard not offer a "Electrioneurolinguistic Engineering" degree yet Podunk Technical State College does? Its because the initial two universities focus on widely applicable and respected subject while the latter wants to attract dumb people with meme degrees. No you goddamn idiots, doing a PhD in Applied Stochastic Methods JUST to become a Quant is fucking dumb. People with bachelors degrees in other parts of the bank make more money than you in day 1!

Do they not realise that they will just spread the disease faster and the business is going to overall lose out on lost productivity and profits in that period? Are people this fucking dumb just to show they are not "lazy" if they come into work with something like ebola or swine flu?

Two reasons:
1. Companies operating on the bare minimum of staff required, so that they cannot cope when someone is sick so that person needs to come in and work even though they should be at home resting;
2. Growing expectation that employees will work rain, hail, or shine unless they're so sick that they need to go to hospital

>got best grades in my school
>had grades good enough for any UK university
>put zero thought in to university choices - picked my hometown one (an ok uni) plus a respected STEM subject that I ended up hating
>had tonnes of interviews for all sorts of great internships and jobs (multiple ibd front office, many engineering, IBM) but failed them all due to bad social skills
>graduated in mid 2015
>live with parents, doing part time minimum wage stuff

How fucked up is my shit? I am quite bitter when I know that there are many people who are not as smart as me but doing successfully.

It's like jumping through all of society's hoops and then at the last second social skills and looks matter more than anything else.

How do you judge the social class of someone from another country?

I mean, the usual "Oh, he went to THAT school..." thing doesn't really apply, since you don't know the context.
I guess everyone n earth knows Harvard/Yale and Oxbridge, but the rest is a mystery.

If you have to judge people based on their university and not from any work they've accomplished you're dealing with a new graduate or a loser. How about talking to them like a human being and asking questions that may give you clues as to their social status.

Judging someone isn't the same as judging their social class.
You can judge the length of a table without being all like, "Tch, I've seen longer."

Launched a program last week I wrote in autoit, but had errors after launch I tested through but realized my registration code was fucked and had to revamp it because the free one I found online online wouldn't do, and 5 people bought by the third day and I had customers up my ass. It's finals week as well. I stayed up 2 days, still couldn't fix the issue, studied 3 hours, took an exam, then passed out for 10 hours. Stated up for 30 hours again. Tried to find solutions on Upwork, but this first guy thinks giving me "pointers" without me paying him will suffice when I just want him to do my fucking work for me. But another few people are on the job. I found a person on freelancer after the kids initial guy could only give me pointers, and I had no time for that, but this guy from Bangladesh made me pay him 50 percent before showing me code. I'm pretty sure I got scanned $150 from him but I've accepted that. I implemented a good registration code from the first guy that wouldn't do his work, so I finally got my product out 4 days late, and I lost my momentum, but at least it's out. I have it priced above what I was originally aiming for, so I'm going to have a Christmas sale in a few days to boost sales now that my product name and price is in people's minds. I'm selling this on a forum.

Any tips or advice? I have a guy converting it to c#, and I'm going to add a lot of features to it to make an amazing product, and it's subscription based of course. I want to sell as much as possible to get money to pay for coders and, well, I'm in the negative.

Why don't you learn C# fag?
>>
I have a sticky, sigs made, contest for prior to put my gfx in their sig, I made a referral program, I'm having a sale, I post all over my niche sub forum, I'm in their groups, old account and lots of rep/whatever shit, etc. Good sales thread. Good site. Good title. Idk what else to do.
>>
>>1005390
For something already released? I'm busy marketing my product to sell and I provide customer service. I'm building a customer base. I don't have time to learn c# to port this shit over. That takes time away from my business.

Hey guys, noob here. Doesnt look like you have a sticky so ill just get right to it.

I want to take up investing as a hobby, but i have literally no idea where to start.

>Should i just pick a sector and start learning about the major businesses in said sector?

>Should i fuck around with mutual funds for a bit just to get myself into investing?

I'm happy to read any books you suggest but i am a big believer that at some point you have to get your finger out of your ass and actually take action so yeah, what im really looking for is how to prepare for beginning to invest

Thanks bros, ill really appreciate any input.

Only invest in things you understand inside & out.
- find out everything there is to find out about something you're considering investing in. I don't care if it takes a week, just do it. Members of the board, executives, who they hire, who their customers are, everything.

Is there anything that won't eventually get outsourced to Indians/Pakis/China? Is there any point in studying anything or working on any skills if they will just get outsourced and cost $2/hour?
27 posts and 1 images submitted.

Anything that involves creativity or proper English skills won't be outsourced.

So just find a job that requires one or the other. Although robots will probably take over the proper English one, since robots can actually write articles on generic topics better and better now.
>>
>>1005180
Nothing except for menial labor gets outsourced.

The only jobs that can be outsourced are ones where it requires 0 communication, 0 quality assurance, nothing really.
>>
>>1005180
>Is there anything that won't eventually get outsourced to Indians/Pakis/China?

Time critical jobs won't get outsourced. Yeah the Chinese can make a 1 off part for cheap, but you need that part NOW not 3 days from now. A domestic company can get you that part the next day because they are a few hundred miles away, not 6000 miles away. Airplanes are not portals. An overseas flight is 12 hours.

Anything related to the defense industry. Congress and the DoD won't let adversaries build our weapons.

Anything that is cheap, but heavy or bulky. Shipping costs eat up any potential profit. Common building materials are a big thing.

Elaborate on this. Something is wrong here. Living at home should not limit your opportunity unless there's a geographical problem. Are you pulling one over on us?

I don't know anything about this field but you should be applying for work in tangentially related areas at the very least for work experience.

Is this manga a good way to educate myself about investment and money matters in general? Starting from a position of absolute ignorance I've found it to be quite informative, and it's led to various jumping off points to look up on Investopedia.

Its quite good. Terribly drawn. The major lessons about scale, Value, and access to Value are quite good. Also a great deal of very good psychology of money.

That said it is at best a tertiary information source. No one ever got rich reading tertiary information. You've got to go to the source and master the source material.

True investors are analyzing raw data and formulating decisions off of it.

I know as a general rule one should not incur debt unless they absolutely have to. So my question is, is medical school a fast track to financial ruin? Will I ever be able to achieve financial success as a doctor?
Med school has always been my plan, I'm very good with the sciences, high GPA etc. can anyone shed light on this? Other possible career alternatives? Experiences?

Bump for interest. It's debt but you'll be a wage slave and paying it off for years. If you don't get into med school you're basically screwed.

What a dumb rule you have. Debt is leverage and can be a powerful tool if used correctly.

That's just what I have been told. I'm young, I take much of what I am told in regards to finance as gospel. We are talking 200k+ debt here, does that still hold true?

Why don't universities teach economics with calculus? It makes economic principles so much easier to understand.

For example, in the introductory microeconomics class at my university, it's not calculus based. So when the professor wants you to find the optimum quantity and price for maximizing a monopolistic competitive firm's profit, you have to use a graph and remember which square is the profit for the firm.

In a later class using calculus, it's as simple as
>take the derivative of total revenue and total cost
>set them equal
>solve for quantity
>solve for price

Maximization is incredibly easy this way. And when students learn it this way, it makes so much more sense.

Why do schools even bother with economics without calculus?
17 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Because integrals and derivatives make most people weep, and most of the little sorority girls and frat bros couldn't pass if you did that.
>>
>>1004042
Perhaps there should be two types of econ classes:

>A class for business majors who plan on not using econ for the rest of their lives
>A class for math, finance, and econ majors who want to go further, ie, graduate school

This would work so much better. Then, phrat boys could pass the class and those of us that care could get a real education.
