A friend's cat very recently broke her leg and he asked me to watch her today while he was working and his lady friend had to go out. It's heartbreaking to see her grumpy and uncomfortable but she's still adorable. Hopefully we can raise the money for her to get surgery and speed up her recovery.

Pics of your pets being cute while recovering from injury/surgery?

My kitten was the cutest in his little cone after his balls were chopped off, but I felt so bad when he got frustrated. He didn't have to wear it very long though, fortunately. Hopefully that big kitty feels better soon, she looks so unhappy!

He WAS the cutest! He looks so content in that picture. I've never seen a fabric cone like that, was it easier for him to deal with?

Big kitty (which she certainly is) managed to get her cone off already and won't let it be put back on. She's usually a love bug so hopefully she starts feeling like herself again soon. Thanks!

Thanks! He needed extra snuggles to feel better about his situation. I had never seen a cloth cone before that either, and let me tell you, it was WAY easier. He was really tiny at the time, and none of the plastic cones my vet had even fit him. This one was extra convenient because I could just flip in the other way when he wanted to eat/drink (he couldn't really figure out how to wrangle it with it up normally) and then just flip it back when he was done.

Aw, has she been picking at her cast? Can she even walk around with her leg like that?

Past the point of sexual maturation, 18-24 mo.

Ideally, though, you should look into alternative procedures that will sterilize a dog without the negative health effects of a neuter/spay. For males the most popular is a vasectomy, and for females you commonly see a tubal ligation or ovary-sparing spay. These alternative procedures can be done at any age and are generally safer than a traditional neuter/spay.
>>
I think it also depends on what breed/size of the dog. I think large breeds(mastiffs, great danes, etc) suffer the most from spaying/neutering too early, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone have experience raising button quail? I have been thinking about buying some eggs online and hatching just a few, but I've never done that before. How hard is it? Are there any recommended websites to buy their eggs?

It's not that uncommon of a thing. You can buy a lot of pets online, including various eggs.

Not bred them before OP but kinda inherited some a few years back. Be warned; they can be bloody noisy little sods, your neighbours, if any, may be of various opinions :/

cat has dandruff, vet says to bathe it once a day with medicated shampoo, cat hates bath, should i bathe cat or just leave alone hopefully dandruff goes away

Think for just a moment for what you have just explained to /a/. Your cat has a medical condition- however small or large; and you have the treatment. You PAID money for a vet to examine your cat, and got their professional advice at a markup. Your only concern is cat tantrums which will eventually fade as it becomes routine.

Seriously soul brother just come on.

Serious question? ...Does this work. I have a cat that hates water and baths but she really needs a good shower. I usually use a washrag to bathe her. I Don't want to traumatized the cat either but she goes bat shit crazy whenever she gets sprayed with water, no matter the gentleness of the stream.

An electric blanket. One of my cats is getting pretty on in years and we think this might be her last christmas. We want to make sure she at least gets through the winter comfortably.

The other cat is getting a bunch of crinkly paper and empty boxes. She couldn't be happier.

Let's say I just had my dog desexed. Should I take off the cone when feeding it?
>>
>>2016930
not all dogs need an e-collar after being desexed, just so you know, but anyways

it should be fine unless you see the dog struggling to eat or something. if a dog needs to wear one at the shelter I work at we usually keep it on during feeding

I have found an orphaned kitten, and am hoping for some advice. My wife and I have a couple cats already, but never had one this young before. The little guy somehow got over to where I work at the McCarran Airport in Las Vegas, into our warehouse. How he managed to survive the airfield, all the massive construction, the shopping centers and busy main drags that run by us is unbelievable, let along slip into our facility.

Anyway, long story short... we're not sure how old he is. We've cleaned him up, gave him some wet food (pate for easy eating), fresh water, a couple tablespoons of whole milk in a dish if he wanted, warm beds, litter, the works... but he is skin and bones... and we think he still needs to be bottle fed, as he looks super young. We're going to take him into the vet, but we can't get in until Monday.

I've gotten a bunch of info online for us to try to get him bottle fed with the right stuff, and there are a ton of tips, some contradicting each other. So I wanted to see if anyone had a bit of advice for us in the mean time that we could take to the bank?

Here's a shot of him...

NO MILK. Cow milk is bad for cats. Also it doesn't need to bottle fed, it's a kitten but still older than you think. It's probably skin and bones just because it's been trapped in there and got separated from its mother/something happened to the mother.

They're neat pets for the dedicated owner, but I hope to god they never become popular. The average pet owner can't handle training a dog properly, and treating even a domesticated fox like a dog is a path to disaster. I've seen so many people botch owning exotic pets in my time as a shelter volunteer.

The following was taken directly from my co workers Facebook page.
"I have had several people comment, when they learn that I volunteer at the center, "Wow, that sounds like so much fun!". Yeah, there are moments when I giggle (who couldn't when face to face with a saw whet or a barred owl?). As much as I love being there, there are days when I cry all the way home or lay in bed at night hoping that barred owl will make it. Watching our director give it her all, thinking we may have success, only to watch it fail and die. No. It's not 'fun'. The joy comes in the releases. When you are able to open a crate housing a bald eagle and watch him go. The joy comes in seeing the injured make progress. The joy comes from being in their presence. But there is always the underlying reality so many of them will never fly free again.
"Caring for injured wildlife is often seen, by others, as a form of entertainment. And while we admit our lives are richer for having personally known each animal, very little of what we do is even remotely entertaining.
The animals we see are suffering, in need of complicated and skilled care. The majority of them have been injured either directly or indirectly by man's disrespect for the natural world. Caring for them is to immerse yourself in worry, both about the individual patient and about the human disregard that has brought them to this end.
Still, people and institutions alike tend to view Wildlife Rehabilitation as a recreation, in the same cubby-hole with animal sports or picnicing in the woods. And therein lies the disturbing realization.
We as a society tend to view wildlife, in fact all of the natural world, as our toy, our playground.
The most frequently given reason for concern over threatened or endangered species is that 'our world' will be less rich without them, or that future generations will never feel 'our joy' in having known them." Continued. . .

Continued. "Very little credence is given to it being 'their world' as well, or to 'their joy' in simply being alive.
Somehow, we can only understand the value of wildlife as an extension of our own sense of self-value, or if you will, self-importance.
No wonder caring for injured wildlife is not viewed with the seriousness it requires to succeed; we don't take any of the natural world seriously.
If you were to come across a man lying by the side of the road, injured by a hit-and-run driver, you would be overtaken by a complex set of welling emotions - anger, compassion, worry, concern for the man's well-being, and that of his family. But never would you view the work of the ambulance team or the doctors striving to save him as entertainment. Never would you question the value of saving the man so he could go about his normal life, whatever that life might be.
There seems to be something basically flawed in our values, not only as they apply to Rehabilitation, but with regard to all of nature outside ourselves. We have assumed all of the rights and privileges for ourselves, seeing the rest as a playground full of toys for our use."

What do you guys think?

I don't think she needs to capitalize "Wildlife Rehabilitation."

other than that, thank you captain obvious. Western culture has distanced itself from nature. Not exactly big news.

My dogs found a little kitten on the porch and cornered it. It was screaming like a maniac...Got to it b4they killed it. Damn thing bit the ever loving crap out of me. Holy crap it hurt ...managed to control it enough to get it away from the dogs and It's calmed down now.
It was just instinct to Try to help it. I wasn't expecting it to bite the crap out of me and go insane. My fault for not even thinking about that.

Do I need to be concerned about these bites? I washed my hands up and did some ointment and bandaids. I got bit 5 times. 3 drew blood. Their teeth are just like little freaking needles so the bites are deep but small and barely noticeable, I have to keep a bandaid on them or they keep bleeding. Worried about cat mouth bacteria I guess.

If they are deep, the bleeding is helping to flush out the catmouth bacteria. Keep it clean and you should be fine.

It's a little one... Maybe 5 weeks or less old. Small... Another reason why I wasn't expecting such an aggressive reaction. I just wasn't thinking about anything except getting it away from my dogs. I think it's lost or something. Idk, it looks healthy. Clear eyes and well nourished.
