Okay so this is like the first time I'm posting on here and I'm not sure if there's a specific thread I should post in but I was hoping I could get some help here
Basically, me and my family own a dog, about 4 years old, chihuahua mix. He's not super well trained but he listens and understands pretty much what you want and such
He's always been sleeping in our beds, and doesn't mind if you pick him up, hold him in your arms or in your lap or whatever, he enjoys it, even if he's on his back
Lately though he's been acting strange from time to time
It started like a little over half a year ago, he started growling sometimes at my little sister. She's pretty loud and clumsy and sometimes not very careful with him, also since she's the youngest, we just assumed he was kinda trying to get a little higher in rank sort of
But just pretty recently he's started growling at me and sometimes my partner (who visits pretty often) who he completely adores.
It only happens if he's like lying down and you lean forward to give him like a kiss, and then he gets super worked up
I've tried everything I can think of, ignoring, comforting, telling him of by keeping him at his back and waiting for him to calm down (this only makes it worse) and nothing works
The weirdest part is that he seems so regretful of it, like right after you lean back he licks you in the face and walks after you to "apologize"
Just today it got really bad and he went from growling to snarling and it even felt like he was gonna bite, something he has never done
I've grown up with dogs, learnt a lot from my grandmother who's worked with dogs most her life, read tons of books and watches documentaries etc, and I have no idea what this behavior is
I'm terrified that he might have a tumor or something
I'll call the vet tomorrow and talk to them, but I just wanted to ask here to see if anyone knew what this might be

That is somewhat odd but can happen as dogs age.
Or he may be sick/hurt in some way
>>
>>2016287
>sick/hurt in some way
Yeah I'm really worried about this
I've tried feeling and squeezing a bit over his body just to make sure he doesn't have any injuries but I couldn't feel anything and he didn't really react
Again, talking to the vet tomorrow, might but take him for a checkup just in case

Hey /an/ I've got a question for you regarding wood/bamboo shrimps.

I've got a 90L/20 gallon tropical freshwater tank, and have had it set up for roughly 3-4 weeks (upgrade from much smaller tank). In the small tank I had guppies, flame tetra and danios. A week ago I put in some pearl gourami and the two wood shrimp in the new tank.

Just now one of the shrimps leapt to the surface, floated down and is now stiff, and have no idea why. The other shrimp is fine and both shed a few days after buying them.

I've heard of wood shrimp playing dead (he does seem to be breathing and is moving his legs periodically). But it's just the way he shot right up and then got all stiff, without anything causing him to jump up.

Anyone experienced with wood shrimp help me out?

btw, the tank water is lower as I've put some in a quarantine tank for the shrimp.

I also did a test strip and all the levels are fine...
>>
Now the other shrimp has just done it? What's going wrong?

gonna need more information though. Have you been using copper based medications? Is the filter media established? Have you been feeding the actual shrimp something they can filter out of the water column in large enough quantities?

Do the two current cats get along well?

Speaking of tarantula in terms of Theraphosidae:
Avicularinae and Stromatopelminae have laterally enlarged tarsi (not in terms of cuticula, but lateral pads of setae) that might actually be used when gliding, just as it is known for Selenopidae.
Apart from that, their size and weight prevent them from gliding as elegantly as observed in Selenopidae (you know the video on youtube I guess).

Speaking in terms of tarantula as Mygalomorphae in general:
Because only few live on trees and a ground dwelling spider doesn't need to glide. Due to missing ecological pressure no adaption needs to be developed.

What's the usual dieoff rate for fish fry? I have some cory fry I've been trying to rear and I seem to lose one every two days or so. They just turn up dead even though the water's fine and I fed them.

It is my copper cory's first spawn, by the way.

What could be wrong with my Neon Tetra /aq/?

3 times now I've woken up to find 1 gasping for air near the surface. A few hours later it will be dead.

I don't think I have an aeration problem as it's only one fish gasping at a time. All the other fish are fine.

change some water no matter what the tests show.

also check your temps. You want to be 78-ish F.

I have been having trouble finding an exact recipe for pet food online. A lot seem to have very different opinions on what exact recipe besides switching it up every once in a while.
Does anyone have any experience making their pets food?
I am making dog food for my two new Akita puppies because I have lost trust in brands since my last dog died from dog food with listeria and salmonella in it.
It would be great if anyone has a recipe where I don't need to buy a supplement.
This is what I have found browsing
Dog Meatloaf with Vegetables
1½ pounds lean ground beef
3 stalks celery (chopped)
2 carrots (grated)
1 apple (cored and diced)
2 eggs
2 slices white bread (torn into pieces)
1 cup regular rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
6 ounce can of tomato paste
1 cup of cooked green beans
3 carrots (chopped)
1 stalk celery (cubed)

and Guidelines:
10 pounds of dog
2 oz. protein
4 oz. carb
(Or can be half and half, just more expensive)
1/2 oz. (minimum) vegetable and/or fruit
1/8 t salt substitute (this is important; it is potassium chloride)
1/2 adult multivitamin
1t fat
Bonemeal for calcium (I use 1 eggshell per day instead)

Carrot isn't good for puppies kidneys, especially in such high amounts. Adult dogs should be ok tho. That recipe seems too complicated for me, I get a decent kibble and cook groun beef, peas, cauliflower and brocoli into it.

I adopted a 3 year old boxer shepherd from some people nearby. He is good in the house and very obedient to vocal commands. The only thing is he pulls relentlessly on the lead and barks at other dogs we come across.

He is gentle with our cat so i don't know that he's aggressive by nature but maybe it's just that he's nervous around other dogs on the walk? the owners said he had been attacked before by a small dog.

How can I fix this? I watched dog whisperer once and he said to walk him close by your leg on a very short lead and try to correct him but he pulls the entire time making it impossible.

I can make him walk by my leg by holding his collar instead of the lead and tugging him every now and again when he pulls but it's very tiring for my arm.

Any recommendations on fixing his walking and making him not bark at other dogs? are classes a good idea? I'm worried he will attack other dogs there.

I don't want to get rid of him and he's perfect in the house it's just the walk that's an issue.

(pic isnt him but looks like him.)

I would also like to train him some advanced stuff like police dogs just to occupy his mind but i don't want it making him more aggressive.

Any tips MASSIVELY appreciated I don't want to give him up. I also want my GF to be able to walk him which she can when i'm there but if he sees another dog he drags her very easily.

Would she ever be able to walk him on her own?

forgot to mention he's not yet neutered. Will that help?
>>

It may not be dog aggression. A dog can pull on a leash to get to another dog, and bark out of frustration; frustration from the other dog being present (which would be aggression), or frustration from you not letting him meet/sniff/play with the other dog. Of course that doesn't mean you should let him. Next time on a walk, pay close attention to your dog. Is he stiff, wiggly, tail high, low, wagging fast, slow, are his hackles raised, and if so how much, is there snarling or teeth showing, and if there are teeth showing, is it a 'smile' or a warning, etc. Training will differ if you're working with a dog aggressive dog vs a very rude and frustrated dog.

To help with the pulling for the time being, get an easy walk harness. It's very easy to put on; the D ring goes on the chest, and you clip the leash to the harness and the collar. This will offset his balance when he pulls, making his pulling less strong and easier to handle.
Now as far as training, your dog pulls because he know that if he pulls in a direction, he gets to go in that direction. Basically, he is getting rewarded for pulling on the leash because when he pulls, you're still walking in that rough direction. For that, I would suggest that whenever he pulls, either stop dead in your tracks until there is slack on the lead (let him come to you himself, don't give him a command) or begin to walk in the opposite direction. If he pulls again, same thing; either stop or turn around again. I would advise doing this first in your house, where there are few distractions, and then move to the yard, and then the street. It's simple, but it takes a lot of patience. He won't learn the idea for the first few walks.
>>
I don't think Shutzhund (is that what you mean by police dogs?) is a good idea for a potentially aggressive dog that's untrained. Agility and obedience would be great though, as Boxers are easily trainable and I think it would provide a lot of physical and mental stimulation. I think you would both benefit a ton from dog training classes, but it would have to be one on one because of your dog's potential dog aggression.

I would be wary of letting anyone walk a dog if they were not capable of really controlling the animal, even if it were well trained. You could have your dog be extremely well trained, but if a cat or something startles it, or he goes after a hot dog cart, or god knows what sets him to run off, you want someone who is capable of holding the dog to be on the other end of the leash, not just for the dog and the walker's safety, but in case the dog ever happened to run after someone's pet. Unless your GF is 12 and has a lot of growing to do, or is recovering from muscle atrophy, if she can't handle the dog with an easy-walk harness on (it does make a big difference) she should probably never walk the dog even when he becomes more trained.

>>2015979
It is possible it will help a lot or a little, but it's also possible it won't change a thing. Either way, I would highly recommend it for health reasons. Since he is untrained, he will be a monster when a bitch in heat is around. I would try to get that done ASAP to see if it changes his behavior around dogs

A while ago, I tried to adopt a Yorkie mix from the shelter. I've been to the shelter myself and the Yorkie has a really friendly personality.

I hence submitted an electronic adoption application form online once I got back home as required. However, the shelter did not reply for longer than a week.

I hence decided to phone the shelter. They told me that my application form was rejected as walking a dog for an hour is insufficient.I said that it was only a small dog yet they said that since I live in an apartment, I need to walk the dog every few hours for it to empty its bladders. I said that this is ridiculous and that I could just use wee wee pads. They also said that we have no time to groom the dog, despite that I could just trim the dog's coat short. In the end, the shelter just cut me off the phone.

I understand that it's nice for a dog to live in a garden, but the property prices in the city I'm from is very expensive and only the upper class could afford that. I understand the owner of the shelter and most people whom managed to adopt dogs from the shelter are from very wealthy backgrounds too and I probably look "poor" in comparison. The Yorkie was adopted by another wealthy family a few days ago.

I felt that I was being discriminated. Is it just this shelter or do a lot of animal shelters prevent people who live in apartments from adopting dogs? Do a lot of shelters like to "choose" the best candidate for adoption as if they're an employer? Thanks.

it was probably the using pee pads that did you in. they're a sign of a lazy owner and should only be used in absolutely needed temporary situations or if the dog is so old/sick they cannot get out to piss

and keep in mind the number of "hurr hypoallergenic they have HAIR" dogs they see with people who don't properly groom them and they ended matted and disgusting. getting a dog like that and admittedly not having money to groom them is irresponsible and a red flag

our shelter doesn't have a blanket no adoption to apartments rule, but it just depends on the dog. but if you would have to use pee pads because you aren't there enough to take the dog out, that would definitely be a denial situation. otherwise it's usually just dogs that are very high energy/training need or loud that would be no-apartment
