Hi, I'm quite new to this and I was hoping if there were some tips on how to create a living biosphere with plants, ants and possibly other critters? I wanted to see if you guys had ideas on plants that I could add that would be compatible with an ant species known as Harvester Ants, small self sufficient plants that could survive with artificial sunlight bulbs in a fish tank 4'x2'?

I plan to add a small pond that wont soak through the dirt, and small bugs that could survive on plants or aquatic plants that could be another source of food for the ants, and maybe some predator bugs for the ants to help keep down their population.

You can't create a working ecosystem in a small tank. The ants would eat too much of the plant before it can regrow, kill all the food bugs or the predator would wipe out the ants.

Best you could do is give the ants some aphids in case the species is known for milking them so they can live together.
>>
>>2018330
I believe this is true. Ecosystems are too big and chaotic to try to contain. OP, I would say figure out which animals you'd like to keep as a baseline, then figure out what else you can put in there that can live comfortably in the same conditions.

So, I'm thinking about a little formicarium too, but I would just put it inside a terrarium with some air plants as decoration. not trying to devise an elaborate interconnected ecosystem, just caring for the ants and caring for the plants and they live in the same terrarium.

Need help socializing my german shepherd. I got him when he was 2 months old (14 now) and he's extremely weary of strangers and won't let anyone he hasn't met before go near him. When walking him and walking past people he's fine but if I tie him outside dunkin donuts to get a coffee I worry somebody's gonna try to pet him (especially a kid) and he's gonna bite them. What do?

science diet is the best
>>
>>2017134
before this shitposting cockweasel gets everyone on /an/ to respond, let me say this:

it depends on your dog. after battling with a bunch of parasites and illnesses immediately after I rescued him, the most high-quality foods were NOT agreeing with him, and I took my vet's (and my friend's, and my boss's, and my aunt and uncle's) advice and tried science diet. his poops were immediately normal where they had been terrible diarrhea.

I know science diet is not the best food, but it was what worked for my dog then, so I can't say it's the "hurr mcdonalds of dog food, Hills shills" etc. that /an/ shits out all day long.

that being said, now that he's been on science diet for a while, I'm trying to switch him back to a higher-quality food. we're trying out taste of the wild and, while it's been a hectic process, he appears to be doing well on it and I feel better knowing he's getting something better.

Despite all the anti-misanthropy, this is actually the best option. Life on Earth will always be a cruel struggle for most animals, but industrialised breeding and slaughter takes the cake. Most other species would be better off without humans(both as species and as individuals).

Well, it technically is bait fish. Just little minnows and stuff. I don't really see the problem. I enjoy watching him and he has fun, and if he's still hungry I put out some traditional cat food.
>>
>>2018904
If you don't see a problem why are you asking the question?
Personally, the only reason I see it as unethical is the fish don't stand a chance. They can never escape and you don't have an aquarium set up if they do.

Then I think: "all the fish I eat is aquacultured. Those tilapia and salmon didn't have a chance either."

Why are ostriches classified as birds instead of mammals? They have everything to be a mammal and almost nothing to be a bird.
>can't fly
>heavy
>tall
>runs very fast
>has red meat
>doesn't make chirping, screeching or squawking noises
>eats a lot
>is kept on barns and not on aviaries
The only thing it doesn't have in common with mammals is that it doesn't produce milk to its offspring, but who cares anyway, platypi and echidnas lay eggs.

So I'm thinking of getting a Ball Python. For those who have owned one, do they typically eat live mice or frozen mice? Or could you train them to eat a certain type? Also would you suggest feeding them in a separate enclosure, or does it really not matter? I've never owned a snake before, so sorry if these are stupid questions.
46 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Most owners prefer to feed frozen/thawed.
Which answers your second question.
As for the separate enclosure, it depends on your comfort with your set up. If you feel like something in the tank can a) enter and irritate the snake's mouth or b) somehow stop it from correctly grabbing and eating the mouse, then yes, take it out and feed it in a plastic cubby.
>>
>>2010443

And let me just state - many owners will say to take the snake out just to avoid the chance of them swallowing a large piece of bark and causing a serious obstruction.

Chances are, your snake is never going to swallow a fucking pinecone, but if you do use some sort of bark or mulch, consider a different substrate. Might be less pretty, but you and your snake both will get over it, and it'll be safer and easier to clean.
>>
Feed frozen. Safer on the snake and more humane.
Don't be worried about BPs not eating anything for awhile in general too, as a heads up. They are notorious to just straight up not eat for months. They are either probably one of the easiest snakes to take care of to one of the more difficult ones because of so many being so finicky with food.

Are there any toys I can put in my ferrets cage? I don't like to put plastic balls in as they tend to just chew on them when its in their cage (worry about choking).

I feel kind of bad that they don't really have much things to play with?

They have sleepcubes and tubes, plenty of things to crawl in and relax but I'm wondering if theres anything more I could do?

Also, I'm thinking of getting a third male ferret - my current ferrets are two 5 month old males, currently un-neutered but will be soon. Any tips to introducing a new ferret?

What would you do?

You catch an animal of an introduced species, one of the worst among birds. Do you:

>a) Kill it

>b) release it

Hard mode: You're at work and there are city people around who will think you're a monster.

Nightmare mode: It's only a baby one, can barely fly, and it's parent are above, squawking in response to its terrified shrieks.

1. a
2. take it to the bathroom
3. stick it in a drawer and go after the parents.
>>

>a)
> cook and feed baby to parrots
>eat parents myself
Best thing for invasive species is to give them a predator

Feed it to my cat. The fucker is a garbage disposal and eats everything remotely meat-ish he can get his claws on.

True, it's not -completely- black, but it's such a dark pigmented purple that without good lighting you really can't tell that it's not.

get a proper tank or tub.
rule of thumb for mantis tank sizes is lenght and width = 2x the mantid's length. height = 3x mantid's length.

give it a lot of twigs to climb around on, they don't like staying on the ground. spray the tank once a day so it can drink from the water drops. they are not picky eaters, just throw in some flies or crickets.
