Anyone ever traveled to Maniema Province deep in the Congo? The local cannibals supposedly have teeth that look like they came right out of a shark. I wanna see this.

The idea of malaria kinda turns me off tho.

I'm off to Florence with my wife this week and really looking forward to it as it will be the first time we've visited Tuscany.

Does anyone have any recommendations of places they've enjoyed there when they've visited (or lived there) or general Florence tips or stories?

If this thread is still around when I'm in Florence or when I get back I'll be posting any little discoveries I make there too.

Heading to San Fransico from LA to spend the next two days. Any cool things to check out that aren't too "touristy"? Chinatown seems interesting but I'm not too much of a city person and I enjoy getting outdoors and seeing nature so hiking trails or something would be badass. Just looking more for "word of mouth" spots instead of lists on google or whatever. Thanks

Skip Chinatown, go down Irving or Clement if you want Asian food. The edge of the Haight and golden gate park is where you can score some hippy drugs.
Want a good burrito, go to the Mission, around 24th is El Farlito's
Best hike in SF in is Land's End. If you really want some hikes in the bay try bahiker.com ; she catalogs a ton of great hikes.

You have to visit the Teide, (search it)
and you have some nice places of island to see like Garachico, (its a very nice historical town next to the sea, where you can swim in natural pools :) Greetings.

Thank you!
Looks nice, will visit

The south is awful unless you are British and need your blood sausage. North is the place. San Cristobal de la Laguna is a world heritage site. Orotava valley looks great.

Planning a trip with the gf end of the year. We low/mid budget. Whats your best experiences there? I'm up for some trekking of 1 day or 2, then some beautiful beaches. 15 days trip.

I went there once to study abroad. Manuel Antonio has a pretty nice public beach and a small little beach town, and some cool hotels nearby to stay at. A lot of my classmates went to Jaco beach and said it was great. Poas Volcano offers some pretty breathtaking views. Isla Tortuga was also fun; you ride out there on a ferry and basically spend the day on the beach, and they offer some activities like snorkeling.

I've been to Costa Rica three times and I love it, so I might be a bit biased. But I think I can give some good advice!

First off, it is not exactly a cheap country but if you do your homework well and plan you should be able to get by on a lower budget.
Costa Rica hasn't got a very interesting culture or history like Guatemala or Mexico, but the nature is amazing and the nature is why you should visit.

When arriving consider booking your first night in the city of Alajuela. It is a lot closer to the airport than San José and San José is pretty ugly and not very interesting. However, it is a bit easier to get around from San José.
Costa Rica has a million great options for trekking. The absolute number 1 is a trip to the Corcovado National Park. You spend three days in total: 1 day hiking into a ranger station, 1 day in the park and 1 day hiking back out. Very few experiences will rival this trip imo. But it is pretty expensive since you have to get a local guide to go with you, on a low budget you probably won't be able to afford it. But consider it. You can also visit on a day trip from either Drake Bay (by boat) or Puerto Jimenez. It is a remote place and the wild life is amazing.

Other places I'd recommend for nature are:
- Monteverde. A cloud forest reserve. It is pretty easy to reach by bus but as far as I know the road to get there is currently being paved so check up on that. It is quite touristy.
- San Gerardo de Dota. A fantastic alternative to Monteverde. It is not very well known and one of the last hidden gems of Costa Rica. Probably the best place to see the quetzal. It hasn't got a lot of infrastructure and is hardly a town. It is just some houses along a dirt road in the mountains. You can reach it pretty easily from San José. Look up "Miriams Quetzals" if you consider staying there. They rent out small, cozy cabins and cook amazing food. And it is pretty cheap!

Will continue in next post.

- The Arenal area. Arenal is probably the most impressive volcano in the country. The town of La Fortuna is the gateway to this area where you can go hiking by the volcano or visit hot springs. You can also spend a day hiking to a big waterfall and go for a swim. The area is also pretty touristy but filled with stuff to do. The volcano is super pretty and still active.
- Volcano Tenorio National Park. In this park you'll find (on a clear day) a completely turquoise river, which is super beautiful. You can visit on a daytrip from La Fortuna or find somewhere closer to stay. It is a bit off the beaten bath.
- Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (not to be confused with Puerto Viejo de Talamanca). It is a pretty ugly and bland town but it is a gateway to the reserve La Selva and rafting. There's a cute litte B&B called Posada Andrea Cristina that I definitely recommend. The owner is a super nice guy with loads of knowledge about birds and other animals.
- Tortuguero. It's kinda like the Amazon of Costa Rica. It's pretty remote and it takes some time to get there, but it is amazing as well. Sailing around the canals and looking for wildlife is great. If you go at the right time you can go see baby sea turtles hatch.

And now the beaches:

Like the first poster said Manuel Antonio is pretty cool, albeit a bit overrun. Stay away from Jaco though. The Atlantic side has loads of great beaches that I don't really know, but I've heard good things about places like Santa Teresa, Ostional, Nosara, Sámara and Conchal.
Montezuma is a cool, laid back and remote beachside town.

If I were you, I'd focus on the Caribbean side and places like Manzanillo, Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Puerto Viejo is biggest town, has a kinda Jamaican vibe and a lot of people go there to party. You can rent bikes and go down to Manzanillo, which I think is my favourite beach in the country. A bit north of Puerto Viejo is Cahuita which is a tiny village with a great national park.

Hi all - I'm here, I'm dumb and I need help. Help me.

Where are good places to travel in the Caribbean? Our primary goal is relaxation and seeing another culture, with a bit of adventure(some boating/hiking/sightseeing). We want to find a happy medium between actually experiencing somewhere else and convenience...so sitting around a pool at a resort is out of the question but so is renting a hut in an unknown spot and hoping for the best.

It's our honeymoon, and honestly life has thoroughly destroyed us recently. We'll likely only have a budget of maybe $2,000...but I'm hoping to figure something out. I'm open to all advice, I have had little opportunity to travel in the past 5-7 years so I know nothing about what sites are good, how to go about doing this (seeing as I'm asking 4chan for help though maybe this board is kinder than others....)

Thanks guys.

This board tends to be pretty friendly
Does your budget include flights? Where do you guys live?

I have seen many places in and around the carribean, i think costa rica and the dominican republic are the best.

Costa rica is perfect for you from what i can gather.

>super friendly locals
>very safe yre still has a sense of adventure
>can go as cheap/expensive as you want
>best place to do adventure activity while still being close to hotels etc
>awesome food and beaches
>lots of cool diving spots
>alot of english speakers (assuming you can't speak spanish)

I know it not an island, but a part of the coast is on the caribean sea.

Google around abit, i think costa rica is a perfect place for a honeymoon.

Thats where i would go anyway

Good luck!

Go to Acapulco MX
It is a classic honeymoon destination.

If you're comfortable with the situation pimp out your wife it's exciting to not only reduce costs, but then to start to see your vacation not only as a fun way to spend money, but intead a fun way to make money-- imagining returning home with more cash than you left!

An acquaintance of mine did this regularly, and that I was a regular customer of theirs until he started being mean to me in texts "Cmon bro you're not a stud so don't pretend like you'll find anything better!"

They loved to go to Mexico, and went to there twice a year. They live in a modest home but it's filled with expensive gadgets, furniture and shit because I guess they're having a hard time finding something they can spend the cash on without alerting the government to their tax free income.

Talk to the driver, look at the scenery, pull over in some small towns or roadside attractions if you have the chance. Just enjoy being alive and on the road. You don't need to be stimulated all the time. Once you hit Wyoming, things get very interesting too.
