Halo Fleet Battles/Ground Command edition

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy, Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age, LotR and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

Guy who was asking about Alkemy last thread reporting in with results from the game I had today.
I don't play fantasy games (aside from Mordheim way back) so that might colour my opinion, but I quite liked it. Nothing too spectacular but it's all pretty fun and simple and the unique dice work well (I was using a conversion chart and normal d6).
The combat card system feels a little overwrought though. If you're going against an inactive opponent there's no reason to not use a Brutal attack.
It's a shame the models are so expensive even for a skirmish game, and then add P&P from France on top. It doesn;t seem like there are any UK stockists, am I being blind?

Whats up fellow fa/tg/uys.

I know you all hate the WoD yada yada...

Anyways i will start a new chronic and my Problem is me and my players are from germany.

I would like to have a chronic here but the suspension of disbelief doesn't allow that. Even with the WoD effect here is far to less shit that could qualify as Vampir shit (Gang shootouts etc.).

So i might be forced to create a City in the US.

What City is interesting in the states (from a vampiristic Point of view).

Oh and ofc you are Welcome to tell me Why i am retarded and Germany is a great place to create a WoD setting in.

I guess Chicago or San Jose, or maybe even Scottsdale. Those places are known for being extremely permissive, or at least have shitty cops and government, so that would make it easier for you to do plots where really overtly bad stuff is going on with the Kindred but don't want mortal interference.

Some more infos:

4-5 players

2-3 (depending if one participates) with some experience in PnPs but not in vampire

2 are pretty much complete newbies

I plan to shit on the 1 vampire per 100.000 humans rule. My City probably will have more vamps.

Couple of reasons why:

1. Elders have herds of humans so they don't Really count here.

2. I mostly view the suburbs and close smaller cities as belonging to the large city (from a vampiristic Point of view).

3. I think having more Npcs to Work with is very benefitial.

I really hate how convoluted these points systems are now. I've built and checked my list over 4 times now and I'm still finding errors.

There's a ton of typos/missing entries/wrong values plastered through these books, too. At least for tyranids.

Maybe the complexity was in part made to push an upcoming list builder app? I might just give in and go to power levels now...

Chaos sucks, and the forces of Chaos are here to stop Chaos!

>Malal was the embodiment of Chaos' indiscriminate and anarchic tendency toward destruction, even of itself and its own agents. The nature of Malal's/Malice's powers is parasitic, as the Renegade God grows in power only when the other Ruinous Powers do.

Malal is the god of Chaos Divided, and after the Emperor of Mankind screwed everything up, he's the galaxy's greatest chance for hope! The Children of Malice are here to fix everything and send Chaos back where it belongs! The Ruinous Powers can't win with us around!

Step one: Get the Star Child online. Time to fix this shit. Yeah, the Emperor fucked everything up, but the Imperium of Man needs a reboot. It's going to suck for a few centuries with the Astronomican offline, but you survived without it before. Just turn on a Pharos emphatic station if you really need a nightlight. The Children of Malice don't have time to coddle you. The Astronomican is drawing the Tyranids, and turning it off might just get ride of your bug infestation.

Step two: Free Isha. Nurgle is dumb as a block of wood. If a bunch of Firehawks can bust into his realm and free someone, we're sure as shit we can. Once we get her out of there, we're going to use her to birth Ynnead. Eldar God of the Dead, baby! Let's see how the Ruinous Powers like them apples.

Step three: Get those Primarch back here. Only three loyal Primarchs are actually DEAD, the other five are just being little bitches. They need a kick in the pants. Some Chaos power will get them up and running again. They can come fight us about it, but they're going to get the band back together if they have any hope of closing the Eye... oh, right.

Final Step: Close the Eye of Terror.

>ATSKNF is yuuuuuge. It will force everybody to play differently against marines. Against normal armies, forcing morale tests by inflicting a single casualty against expensive elites will be a thing. Against marines this tactic is too unreliable and enemy armies will need to plan to whittle elite marine units down to the last man.

I was in a ten year long campaign that was filled with so much backstabbing that players spent more time alone with the DM in the garage(that's where the DM pulled players aside for secret shit he didn't want anyone metagaming on) than actually together when all was said and done.

We had PVP.
We had players playing current characters having to fight their old characters.
We had PCs attempting to orchestrate the end of the world and almost succeeding.
We had PCs trying to save the world and almost failing.

You know when a really long running show finally comes an end and they do a bunch of reveals about the characters and stories to wrap everything up before rolling credits? It was like that in our final session. There were schemes in play from the very first session to the last that were PC driven. I don't think I'll ever experience anything quite like it again. We can barely get a short campaign going these days with how busy everyone is. Getting old sucks.

PVP isn't for everyone though. We just had the kind of group where it worked out so well and made for an intriguing story.

What do humans do in your setting that other races don't? Here are a few things unique to mine:

>Humans are the only creatures to be obsessed with recreating their own likeness. Dolls for instance are a uniquely human invention, as well as the art of humanity has humans as one of its center points throughout the ages. Other races feel no similar compulsion to recreate themselves by any means other than breeding and find humanity's obsession with representations of themselves disturbing.

>Similarly humans are the only species with an 'uncanny valley' effect of others that look close to them but not quiet. This seems to be tied in some way with humanity's obsession with recreating themselves.

>Halfbreeds often are scorned by mainstream human communities, as they fall under this uncanny valley reaction.

>Human's have a better lung capacity and louder voice than nearly every other race.

>Humans are very good at single minded repetitive tasks. Other races, such as dwarves, have natural talent with certain crafts, but humans have a single minded persistentness that allows them to devote an entire lifetime to a single craft, or even a single piece of art/craftsmanship.

That's pretty neat. So Dwarves have no works of forgecraft or stonework that resembles themselves and Elves have no paintings and stained glass windows of themselves? Are necromancy, golemancy, and some forms of animation uniquely human magics?
>>
>>53550020
Humans are a rare sight in my setting, being half breeds of elves and dwarves. They don't have their own race or extensive civilization or customs, instead living in the shadow of their parent societies.

There's nothing they do that other peoples can't, but every human in the setting is a special snowflake all their own.

Roleplaying Public Radio is mediocre, but has been around for a million years and deserves credit for that. Any game Caleb runs (Eclipse Phase: Know Evil, Red Markets: The Brutalists) breaks from this trend into 11/10 status and deserves a mandatory listen. That man is a fucking genius.

+1 Forward has nice short episodes where they interview the creators of PbtA games and then briefly play them to show em off. Their episodes on Monsterhearts 2, Night Witches, and Bluebeard's Bride are all fantastic.

Ken And Robin Talk About Stuff is two veteran RPG authors going over everything from narrative structure to game design to niche history to blueberry recipes. It's the gold standard.

Can someone explain to me why Warhammer and 40k models are so expensive compared to Gunpla? I mean with all the color separation and everything it feels like a much better deal when I can get a solid 1/144 for about 15-20 compare to one army for about 35-85. I mean they only come in one color which is fine but how? How can these be so expensive?

- Economy of scale
- Bandai makes more money in a quarter than GW's entire net worth
- Non-Chinese labor
- Different market segments and market price bearings
- Different business policies and attitudes
- Anime support
- Different appeal (aside from Tau mech overlap)
- Difference in competition
- Difference in plastic injection model kit prevalence in respective countries

Short answer is they are apples and oranges and GW is charging as high as they possibly can, which for various reasons, happens to be higher than what Gundam is.

1/144 are only cheap because more expensive grades exist. They probably be higher if they didn't. Why do you think the larger grades cost more? Sure, they have more components and cost more to design, but pound for pound in terms of production and plastic and packaging costs, the scale is not the same. The price per design cost/plastic received jumps as the Gundam grade goes up, because the market will bear that price.

1/144 HG should probably cost even less than its current price. Why do you think the MSRP is around $15 for a 1/144 but you can get them for under $9 in some places.
>>
>>53549129
This is a very good post.
>>
>>53549129
Also the type of plastic is a factor.

Gunpla uses a lower quality plastic than GW. Im not saying it's terrible, but it's just using more recycled material. Plastic can only be melted and cooled so many times before it breaks down or loses its integrity, so often plastic of higher quality uses less recycled material, and lower quality uses more.

The more malleable and tougher the plastic is without snapping shows how little recycled (from miscasts and runners and sprue) material was put back into it. More brittle material has more recycled.

Gunpla falls into the latter, but not too far. It's still quality stuff, but I can feel the difference when I am working with it vs GW plastic.

> Large gravity wells, (stars, black holes, etc.) are linked by hyperlanes, invisible “tunnels” through spacetime. The space inside hyperlane tunnels is apart from spacetime, and consequently, it is impossible for conventional matter to exist within a hyperlane tunnel without a bubble of spacetime shielding it from the void in the tunnel. Some large gravity wells don’t have hyperlanes, and a few have as many as a dozen hyperlanes, most large gravity wells have 1-4 hyperlanes.
> FTL travel doesn’t exist, as under newtonian physics it is impossible for matter for travel faster than light. Interstellar travel, however, does exist, and is made possible by hyperlanes. Using a hyperdrive, a starcraft can form a stable “bubble” of spacetime around itself, breach one side of a hyperlane, and propel itself through the tunnel at FTL speeds, reaching the large gravity well at the other end of the hyperlane.
> This is possible because spacetime, and by extension, conventional physics, are absent from the hyperlane tunnels, and starcraft are able to insert themselves into the “flow” of the hyperlane, rapidly propelling their bubble, and the starcraft generating it, to the other end of the hyperlane. It is theoretically possible for an infinite amount of starcraft to travel in the same hyperlane simultaneously, as outside of an individual starcraft’s bubble, mass does not exist, and it is impossible to crowd the interior of a hyperlane.
> It is not however, practical for an infinite amount of starcraft to travel in the same hyperlane simultaneously, as forming and holding a stable bubble of spacetime requires an obscene amount of energy, and too many bubbles in a hyperlane tunnel can cause it to become unstable, which is, to say the least, a bad thing.

> (1/2)
>>
>>53548137

> When a hyperlane becomes unstable, it has a high chance of collapsing, which worst case scenario, would phase any traveling starcraft inside it out of existence, or, best case scenario, force them to exit the hyperlane and enter material space, where they have no large gravity well within light years, and no way to re-enter the hyperlane, forcing them to spend decades or centuries traveling to the nearest system at sublight speeds. As most starcraft are designed to sustain themselves for half a year, or a decade at most, this is often a terminal mistake.
> Because of this, in heavily populated civilized space, traffic between hyperlanes is heavily regulated, taxed, and bureaucratized to prevent the disaster a hyperlane collapse would cause. In the frontiers there is much less traffic to warrant such regulation, and little authority capable of regulating it to begin with. Consequently, hyperlane travel is much less of a hassle in the frontiers.
> Hyperlane travel is not instantaneous, nor is it danger free. Travelling via hyperlane takes anywhere from two months to two decades, depending on the length of the hyperlane and relative strength of the large gravity wells involved. Expected travel time often varies, shortening or lengthening for weeks or months, even years in extreme cases.
> While hyperlanes are a natural part of the universe, hyperlanes are not a universal constant. With the passing of time, hyperlanes collapse on their own, and more rarely, spontaneously come into being. The fact that old hyperlanes are collapsing faster than new hyperlanes are forming is the cause of much controversy, and many believe that sometime in the future, all hyperlanes will collapse, leading to the end of quick interstellar travel, and by extension, interstellar civilization.

> All soldiers have standard issue shield generators that make physical means of attacking such as bullets useless. To rectify this, energy weapons are being researched by all races. At the moment, energy sabres are widespread and current primitive energy based firearms can only fire a single shot, require a huge amount of energy, and are rather inaccurate, but one shot rips through the shields like they are nothing and usually kills with one hit.
> There are two variations of energy rifle, powder rifles and dynamo rifles, both of which use energy packs to power their shots. Energy packs are small, squishy objects roughly the size of a standard beanbag, and when charged, explode to release a focused energy bolt. Powder rifles are loaded with synthetic blasting powder, whereas dynamo rifles are loaded by a hand-cranked dynamo. Powder rifles are cheaper and more damaging, but less accurate and take longer to load, whereas dynamo rifles are more accurate and reliable, but less damaging and more expensive.

Asgardians grow more powerful with age in general but in regards to the Odinforce it was shown more powerful when it became the Thorforce many millennia after Odin had it.

Odin was treated like a child by Galactus and only barely managed one decent hit that was able to knock him out due to his hunger, while Galactus probably wasn't fully fed when King Thor fought him he wasn't starving either. Thor put up a much better fight against a more powerful Galactus after he and the Thorforce had been aged beyond Odin's time. Sure he needed more than that to actually win but that is besides the point.

Ok, so I just 'rediscovered' The game HeroScape by Milton Bradley. Apparently Wizards of the Coast snatched up the license later on... Does anyone still play this? How is it, and which sets are still available/in production?

Which one is the current "core" rules or base set? is it worth it to sink about 100-150 dollars into? I'm more worried about local gaming support. though I don't mind just collecting the figures, it looks pretty cool...How's the quality?

Found this site, Apparently the base core sets are called "Master sets" There seem to be two out so far...not sure if any more are to be released or if the game is still supported...seems like a shame if it's been abandoned...

Weve had this thread before, several times in fact, and they generally dont last long.

Usually the consensus is the game itself is rather stupid, and the minis are passable for other games, even though they are cheap prepainted crap. But the hex terrain, omg that hex terrain, is amazing. Battletech and heavy gear players love it, and they are usable for just about any game actually. It's really good modular terrain, even though you end up needing a lot of it for most needed table sizes.

As someone who doens't play those kind of games, what's the difference between stuff that you paint yourself and pre-painted stuff? Why are the latter "cheap"?
