>How do you encourage players to pick races based off rp or appeal instead of purely mechanical benefits?

Remove stat bonuses. As long as they exist, people are going to pick races that work WITH their class, because being weak is often also boring.
>>
>>53539341
i agree with everything except
>because being weak is often also boring.
>>
>>53539341
Do you compensate for the loss in any way? Do races offer any stat bonuses at all, maybe modular ones like v.human or halfelf +1s?

Is it viable to 3d print Warhammer miniatures? I've seen some 3dprinters with an incredible level of detail, down to some fraction of a millimetre.

It is also legal in the EU.

Depends on what you mean by viable.

Stuff I've ordered from Shapeways looks fine for detail resolution but so far remains expensive for small runs even compared to most of GW's prices, and from personal experience is much harder to work with the GW's plastics. The release agent took multiple hours of simple green soaking and scrubbing to fully clean off (though I've been told this is anomalous?), and the material is far more brittle.

I wouldn't expect it to be cheaper than ebaying parts unless you're looking for someting oop, or in very high demand, and things I've sculpted/plasticarded myself are much much hardier for pushing around a table top.

The only real case I can see for this is convenience for small detailed bits that are hard to convert consistently like some of those space marine emblem pauldrons, or if you want to print up an entirely custom army that would too time consuming to convert by hand. Until the prices come down and the material properties improve anyway.
>>
>>53538412
Some printers have also a scanner. It could be possible to replicate small bits or small miniatures a lot of times, with the right precision level
>>
>>53538412
>This

I've ordered a few shoulder pads and it can be a little pricey.

I asked a guy to design some 40k sized weapons and he wanted like $50 just to design and submit the print to Shapeways. I'd still have to order and pay for the actual item.

Speaking of Autochthon...

Having read the Cities of the World jump, I've been inspired to give a Colossus/Polis option a shot. Currently it is a kind of multi-levelled capstone.

As I'm a little concerned about getting the feel and power involved right, how do people feel about this, the tentative final perk for it:

>400 - ...it is the Sum of its People [Essence 9] (requires all previous perks)
>All life within your borders is a part of yourself, just as you are a part of them.
>From merely receiving it in prayer, you now have a deeper bond to your citizens. Essence (and other energies) can be passed back and forth with minimal loss, and the deep well of the people's pride can be tapped in times of emergency - lending you their strength, speed and resilience, to directly reinforce your Charms and avatars. Those who live within your borders for a prolonged period, exposed to this fundamental interconnectedness, will also find their health and personal power being stimulated somewhat by your own - leading to a naturally higher level of personal Essence, an improved sense of community, a greater ability to engage with any aspect of Polis-culture - from its sciences to the arts - and numerous other small benefits.

>On the individual scale, this contract can be formed with any organization you are considered a meaningful or defining leader of - though in this case it requires either conscious acceptance or an honest internalisation of that organization's principles. The ability to tap attributes additionally requires prior and active agreement, and is a semi-permanent transferral - those who grant you these qualities lose them to such a degree that it threatens their life, those drained of strength left unable to even lift their heads; those drained of wits, stripped of memory. The transfer lasts for as long as they live, unless somehow disrupted or the pact is deliberately annulled - by either party.

Chaos sucks, and the forces of Chaos are here to stop Chaos!

>Malal was the embodiment of Chaos' indiscriminate and anarchic tendency toward destruction, even of itself and its own agents. The nature of Malal's/Malice's powers is parasitic, as the Renegade God grows in power only when the other Ruinous Powers do.

Malal is the god of Chaos Divided, and after the Emperor of Mankind screwed everything up, he's the galaxy's greatest chance for hope! The Children of Malice are here to fix everything and send Chaos back where it belongs! The Ruinous Powers can't win with us around!

Step one: Get the Star Child online. Time to fix this shit. Yeah, the Emperor fucked everything up, but the Imperium of Man needs a reboot. It's going to suck for a few centuries with the Astronomican offline, but you survived without it before. Just turn on a Pharos emphatic station if you really need a nightlight. The Children of Malice don't have time to coddle you. The Astronomican is drawing the Tyranids, and turning it off might just get ride of your bug infestation.

Step two: Free Isha. Nurgle is dumb as a block of wood. If a bunch of Firehawks can bust into his realm and free someone, we're sure as shit we can. Once we get her out of there, we're going to use her to birth Ynnead. Eldar God of the Dead, baby! Let's see how the Ruinous Powers like them apples.

Step three: Get those Primarch back here. Only three loyal Primarchs are actually DEAD, the other five are just being little bitches. They need a kick in the pants. Some Chaos power will get them up and running again. They can come fight us about it, but they're going to get the band back together if they have any hope of closing the Eye... oh, right.

Final Step: Close the Eye of Terror.

Hey /tg/, I could use some advice.

I'm due to begin roleplaying a sergeant (in the more modern military sense of a unit leader, though in a medieval fantasy setting) in the next few weeks. I'm going to be taking command of a unit of about a dozen men and women, with varying amounts of armour, mostly carrying polearms, but not always.

These people haven't met my character before. A few of them have met each other. We're all part of a military order at our LARP system who worship the goddess of the Sun, answering to me, the order's head knight and head priest, ranked from lowest to highest in the chain of command. I'm mostly looking for advice on how to effectively roleplay a unit commander in these conditions - I've been focusing on taking inspiration from interviews with soldiers, drill instructors, certain characters in media who I think do "restrained anger" pretty well, while also trying to find a balance where I'm adopting a brotherly or fatherly role over the people I'll be commanding.

All in all, I want to be able to preserve the idea that the players I'm working with are soldiers in a rough-and-tumble unit of crusaders and cutthroats and aren't being led by some 20-something middle-class nerd (which they in fact are).

First meeting:
Emphasis the "crusader/religious" aspect by commanding them to kneel for blessing and sermon calling down your god's wrath on his/your foes. If the LARP background material has included prayers or hymns, finish with one.
Try drilling them to march in step, as that's the first stage of learning to fight as a formation. Formation should be polearms centrally, sword and board on flanks for tactical flexibility.
>>
>>53537161
Small unit military leadership comes down to a) be better or close to as good at doing what your unit is meant to be doing b) understanding the next level of what your commander might want from you c) willingness to go the extra mile (when your unit is tired you keep going in short)

Small unit leaders still get their hands dirty - youre probably fighting next to the people but just give commands as to how to engage. Youre part of the group and their link to the bigger structure if it exists.

There are different ways people lead, everyone who has to lead develops a leader-persona. This persona is part of you but you are other things as well, which might be perceivable when youre with peers.

Does your country have a local RPG publication? Does it have a local setting or system that is popular in the country and probably nowhere else?

In Brazil we actually have two pretty big settings/systems that are popular and still alive that I know of, Tormenta RPG, a fantasy setting, and Brigada Ligeira Estelar, a space mecha game with 1800s european culture.

These settings are mainly supported by what is probably the only surviving RPG publication in the country, that works with a publisher (that used advertise in the magazine when it was just a FLGS) that is actually quite good and they actually have quite a lot of books.

Tormenta is a fantasy setting that started as a way to tie up most of the adventures published in the Dragão Brasil, the local RPG publication, and was initially given along the 50th edition of Dragão Brasil. Since then it escalated and now runs a modified 3.X DnD as it's own system, and is actually quite good.

When it started it had trio Tormenta as the main writers, who were basically a fantasy guy, an otaku and a rules lawyer who just created whatever they thought was cool in the setting and then spun it around to fit. The settings main villains were based around some drawings of Kamen Rider style villains the otaku had drawn, for exemple.

Then, came the new trio Tormenta that was a lot more divisive and tried to normalize the setting to a more standard fantasy. While it was good at some points, like making the main villains now some really bad nightmare fuel, it also made the setting a little boring and it seemed they didn't really get what made it fun.

And then recently the old guys cam back so we are getting a new race that is basically Genji from Overwatch in the new Jade Kingdom book.
>>
>>53536878
There actually were other game lines and publishers, but they mostly died in the 2000's with DnD 3.5.

Even Tormenta and Dragão Brasil struggled.

Even now there are probably some more fringe settings and systems but they are not as popular.

Well considering Guilliman simply cannot lose and is now Garvien Loken-tier, it'll be another Tyranids over Macragge. Lots of fighting, but in the end allies arrive because the Ultramarines are still a legion and like half of all the Imperial space marines, and you cannot defeat that many so Guilliman wins "proving himself once again the master of the all the myriad disciplines of war"™ and pulls through the day "with heavy casualties"®.
Only that they might make him actually kill Mortarion for real to make Guilliman gain face.
Which is shit, but that's GW's boy Guilliman.
Oh, they might make planet Konor explode or something, like how Tyranids ate Prandium or how Word Bearers ruined Calth's surface. You have to kill the obligatory named planet of the 500 (0.2%) to make it seem like the loyalists came out sufficiently wounded.

Ok /tg/, help me out here.

I cannot fucking design a boss battle scenario where the boss lives for more than 3 turns and takes even 1 of the PCs down to save my life (in 5e).

Every boss battle I run, the players run roughshod over the boss. None of the PCs ever go below zero, and sometimes a few of them ever even take damage. It feels incredibly emasculating that none of my bosses can even threaten my players, with minions.

Can you please help me? I really want to run a dungeon with a spirit naga. How do I design it?

Ignore boss hp until you have almost killed at least one pc, then give him one or two more rounds.

I ruined an awesome deathwatch game because i couldn't figure out how to make a boss either. He died in like three rounds even having two phases.
>>
It's all about action economy. Don't have an encounter where it's a single boss vs 4-5 players. Throw in some fairly capable adds or traps and shifting dangerous terrain. Better do both, in fact.
>>
A giant naga composed of a writhing mass of snakes held together by a magical membrane.

It's basically a beanbag of snakes in the shape of a giant naga and when one limb is severed, the limb just extrudes from another section.

Also spike traps. Always spike traps.

And have some goblin steal some of their loot and run directly down the trapped hallway leading into the boss room.
