How do we improve these? Thesaurus, Lexicons and so. We need a thread like this. Most threads have to do with mechanics and which system you hate and love. Mechanics make only a part of the game. Without atmosphere you get a lame afternoon.

Anybody in the mood to talk alignments? I know it's your favourite pointless thought experiment.

My personal feel is that the usual alignments would work if only they didn't sound so extreme and absolute. It's not a problem with the system, it's almost just a problem of wording.

So here's my solution (I'd like to test it out with my players at some point and I don't think anybody I know really minds about alignments)

Good vs Evil is instead Altruistic vs Selfish
Lawful vs Chaotic is instead Traditionalist vs Subversive

Instead of going from saint to sociopath, you go from "I go out of my way to help others" (altruistic) to "I don't really care about helping others, I try not to hurt others" (neutral) to "I could hurt others if it's useful to me, I might still feel some regret" (selfish)

And regarding the other two: I avoid the word Chaotic being read like "lolcrazy" by many, and the main concept shifts from "does this character follow or doesn't follow the rules" to "what rules does this character think should be around". The range goes from "I want to preserve traditions and follow ancient rules" (traditionalist) to "I just want rules that make sense" (neutral) to "Traditions are useless, if a rule has no point it has to be changed and it can possibly be ignored until it's changed" (subversive).
This one gets political very easily, it's hard to find words that are not loaded positively or negatively for this type of definition. Any suggestion?

The other point is to have an alignment system that can create attrition but not proper hatred in a group of characters working together. A good character and an evil character will almost kill each other on sight, instead an altruistic character and a selfish character can still work together for the same goal, even though the selfish one might end up doing some dick move halfway through if it's convenient.

Like it? Hate it? Better ideas?

I've created an abomination. Say hello to my new incarnation of chapter master smash fucker.

Congratulations, you've the base work of a 2+ invuln beast from hell that hits like a truck. Stacking buffs and auras could make him more stupid though, and I'd suggest the following if you want to really go whole hog.

> Space marine psyker with psychic fortress and might of heroes. Grey knights have the needed key words to be buffed. Enjoy those FNPs vs most mortal wounds (on top of your copious denies) and your extra toughness strength and attacks.

I feel like explaining why this guy can be stupid is rather pointless. You'll have a 2+ 2++ with two FNPs against most mortal wounds grand master who also can't be tied down and either rerolls charges or never fails to wounds depending on his warlord trait is. Drop him in front of your opponent's gun line and challenge him to try and shoot you down. Double points if you gate him close to their favorite model on turn one.

Grey knights have so many psykers that they will effectively deny a lot of the smites coming in, especially seeing as grey knights will have brotherhood of psykers adding +1 to deny rolls. Also, smite can be stopped by having units in front of him.

Using D&D 5th edition and the 4 current Plane Shift PDFs I'd like to do some simple write ups for the various planeswalkers from M:tG. In the Amonket booklet says that there is no mechanical benefit to planeswalking, it just serves as a plot device to change locations. I was thinking maybe stating them out as gestalt characters. Or should they follow normal multiclass rules?

I have a confession /tg/.

I've GM'd probably 50 roleplay sessions, but I haven't killed off a PC.

I never set out determined to let them live. But when they're on death's door I end up giving them extra saving throws, or if they're reduced to 0 enemies would change focus instead of finishing them off, or I'd give them some agility roll to grasp a tree root as they tumbled off the cliff. I've also put the really dangerous stuff (not even aggressive necessarily) a long way away so they wouldn't die from stupidity.

I'm a pretty agreeable person, I get bunched up in the guts if someone is upset at me. But I know that handling the PCs with kid gloves takes away the sense of accomplishment, having no huge threat there is actually taking the seriousness and gravity out of the game. It also gives the players incentives to invent bullshit reasons why they should get special treatment if it works sometimes.

So, I suppose next session I'm going to be consciousness about enforcing reasonable consequences.

Dragonfolk and beastfolk experience none of these differently. Demonfolk possibly are more greedy and evil but in modern adaptions are often watered down to be not even that.

Lucifer's sin was not to bow before Adam. I should think that demonfolk should be above all proud. They would call themselves "the first peoples" and worship no gods. It would be tradition in their families to cast out their children once they are of age. No demon has a father or master. Receiving a gift is a shameful thing and any such gift giving must at least pretend to be a trade.

That's fair, but I just like the idea of a Fetich soul too much to give it up. Love & Justice look almost identical in their "human" guise, due to how closely their concepts are tied together. Sadly I've only figured out a couple of my Third Circles, and very little below that. Hell I haven't even come up with proper names for most of them, because I SUCK at naming.
