Have you ever found a post written by someone you knew, /tg/? What tipped you off that you knew that particular anon? Were it similiar stories, characters he described or his magical realms? What made OP's faggotry something familiar?

Also, fuck you, you trap-furry-pathfinder loving ginger bastard.

Yes, one of my party members frequents this board and often posts to 5e general, especially when a new arcana hits.
He's easily recognizable by his "wizards of the coast, not fighters who can boast" pasta and his glee every time wizards can overpowered shit again.

When someone asks for info on Finnish mythology, everyone knows to immediately shout "Kalevala!" or something closley related.

Question is: do we actually KNOW enough about Finnish mythology and ancient history (beyond /his/ tier speculations) to run a game about it, it does our knowledge really simply just begin and end with that single poem, however interesting it is?
19 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>52553225
No. What we know about Finnish mythology is reconstructed and plainly made up in the 19th century. Original sources don't exist, because it was oral tradition. The best we can do is to look at folklore and extrapolate from there what kind of belief system might have originated such traditions and sayings.
>>
>>52553292
Finns will happily tell you all about their made up glorious history, though.
>>
>>52553292
That's not the whole truth. There's a lot of late 19th and early 20th century bullshit to be sure, but some Swedish-language notes have survived from when the indigenous beliefs weren't extinct yet.

Swedish-speaking researchers also studied ancient Finnish religious practices after the fact but before the 19th c.

>start playing a pen and paper with some friends over teamspeak
>none of us, except the GM, are particularly experienced with /tg/
>everyone is too afraid to take risks
>everything is either played extremely safe, or takes forever to be decided upon (often with heavy hints by the gm)

How do you get across that barrier, /tg/? We've had characters die before, and I am too attached to mine to risk his life.
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>52552570
forget getting attached.

forget being cautious.

Play your characters like you would drive a stolen car.
>>
>>52552665
But we also want to get shit done. If I drive against a tree with a stolen car the instant I get in, I might aswell walk.

We are currently playing a campaign (after only playing a bunch of one-shots before), and a character dying in mid-campaign would mean that everything he gathered to solve the campaign would be lost, and a new character would basically start at zero.
>>
>>52552752

If everyone is at lvl 5 and your character dies, your GM shouldn't make you reroll a new character at lvl 1. Letting you pick up again like nothing happened is one thing, but making you start all the way over is another.

What ever happened to the stories in those threads? Are the writers still working on them and planning to post them when finished, or have they just been dropped and lost to the annals of time?

Same thing that happens to any discussion on any board on 4chan that lasts beyond three threads; it devolved into cliques and becomes hard for new comers to join as the collective group develops their own memes and mannerisms.

The reduced number of new people means the growth stalls and eventually stops by the sixth thread.

With the fresh input having disappeared, the regulars lose interest too and eventually it withers and dies by the tenth thread.

Beyond the tenth thread it is effectively a dignity-less zombie. It has no dignity because it refused to take a bow and leave when it had dignity. It is a zombie because the mind is rotting and it moves clumsily forward without no real thought put into it.

It happened to Disney Villains Victorious, it happened to the original Love and Krieg, it happened to Love and Krieg 2.0 and it has happened to dozen of other fluff writing threads where people start valuing the circle jerk.

I'd politely sage your thread, but I think the people who make the many "General" threads on /tg/ needs to see this too because it applies there as well.
>>
>>52552772
Generals are usually about actual system though, which will at least draw in new people interested about those systems. Also you forgot one little thing:

They petered out because they were shit and they only lasted cause nobody wanted to hurt the writers fee fees
>>
>>52553083
>which will at least draw in new people interested about those systems
Right insofar that is the intended effect.
It is wrong because that doesn't actually happen, instead when someone new asks a simple question they are met with anger because people have been asked that people so much they can't tell trolls from genuine curiosity. (Inb4 "/tg/ is untrollable", just make any comment on sexism in any thread and it is instantly derailed.)
Then the new guys are told to read the OP where all the information is conveniently gathered in paste bins, maybe a few Google Docs, but is so disorganised the new people can't figure out heads or tails and they tend to give up. If they don't give up, the sheer volume of information they are now feel obligated to read through before asking any questions will also be a massive deterrence, making it hard for new people to get into it.
Not impossible, but very hard.

>they were shit and they only lasted cause nobody wanted to hurt the writers fee fees
No argument from me there, that is also an important detail I decided to skirt over only passingly mentioning the circle jerk.

Legend of the Elements is a good system

it's PbtA, the combat mechanics encourage mobility and using the terrain, and the playbooks do a good job getting the 'feel' of each bending style

So since the new LoL release (Yeah, I know) hyped me up about that kind of fighting style.

Did you guys ever have two characters in your campaign who had such 'combined' fighting style, or helped each other in combat in a unique way?

Just ideas go as well

What does /tg/ think of a non-human setting? It isn't unimaginable for other race to fill in the hole left by mankind, right? And, why should we always need someone whom we can sympathize with?

>What does /tg/ think of a non-human setting?

A good decision. I'm tired of having humans shoved in my fucking face in every setting.
>>
Sympathizing with a character is a fundamental part of giving a shit about a story. I don't think that it's impossibly to sympathize with an elf or goblin or whatever, but I think being unable to is a serious flaw. I kind of feel like taking humans out of the picture kind of defeats the purpose of fantasy races for certain stories to a degree since they're basically defined by the ways they aren't human, but there's plenty of settings without humans that work fine

I'm getting into Fragged Empire right now, and I really like the idea of humans as the mysteries long-dead ancient race. It gives the setting a unique flavor.
