Personally, I'm quite disgusted with how M:tG has been handling this new Plane. There should be more black people (or Nubians, as Kush as it was known to the Egyptians) to reflect the rich multicultural heritage of the Old Kingdom, where black men and women were not only a substantial portion of the population, but even Pharaohs!

I like the "they think it, and it works" lore because it's vastly more fun than the new canon.
The new stuff is basically that the ork meks are implanted with amazing mechanical knowledge from their spooky creators, and they can make powerful technology out of almost anything, or something. It's a lot less fun.

Orks are all about doing what you want, being green, and not giving a fuck. Just roll with what you want them to be, nobody will mind.

Extinction is set several hundred years in the future after a war and/or disaster (it isn’t immediately clear) has destroyed most Human life on Earth and contact has been lost with all of the solar settlements beyond Earth. Prior to this incident, Humans had spread and colonized the Solar System, building vast cities on Luna, Mars, Titan and several orbital stations around Earth and Jupiter. Advanced technology made major progress in many fields. Humanity began to terraform Mars and Venus, vastly extended its lifespan, and sent colony ships out beyond the solar system itself.

This Golden Age would last for centuries, but human civilization fell victim to a cataclysm of extraordinary magnitude, known as the Collapse. It is not known what the Collapse really was. What is known is that contact was lost with deep space vessels and then one by one, contact with the outer colonies was lost. The early warning satellites were disabled and large asteroids wiped out 99.99% of life on earth, burning the surface before plunging it into an 18 month period of cold darkness. It is rumored by some that the Collapse was caused by radical human colonial separatists, others say it was an alien attack. The enemy that destroyed Humanity is known as the Darkness, because of the mystery surrounding who or what it is.

There was a playtest forum set up on Myth-Weavers an age and a half ago. I had joined that, but after an entire month passed with literally zero activity, I didn't bother coming back.
And then at some point an edition based on the FATE system came out. As far as I'm aware, that was the last of that.

Oh, I've been looking at picking it back up again and have some real life friends to work on it with me, I'm just not really experienced in a lot of the mechanics side at all.

If you're not experienced in mechanics, it's better to pick something lighter and more action-oriented. It would fit lighter atmosphere of CAtastrophe better than overburdened "realistic" system.

Some time ago someone mentioned Ryuutama and it's probably the best choice for CATastrophe with its focus on travelling and exploring new lands. Plus the translation of first supplement dealing with ocean adventures is going to be released soon (here's the translation draft by the way - docs.google.com/document/d/1P-dZHtgehC6Q_Z_fdV1j3QFzxcqbj8m5MGUZMzbY8Rw ).

I was thinking of dissecting the essence of some 4e classes to see what I could do about making additional classes but haven't any jump out at me as must have conversions.

I've seen Strike mentioned around here plenty of times but never bothered looking into it, sell me on the system.
All I know is that it is built around grid based combat.

Apparently, it mixes Tactical Combat and Narrative stuff on a generic framework you can do a lot of different genres and settings with. A bunch of people recommended it to play something XCOM based and I've heard it more than once for Black Company or Mount & Blade style shenanigans.

Non-green elves are always a little weird, as is someone that has one color associated with Simic and two colors not associated with Simc actually joining the Simic Combine. But these aren't massive issues.
