It needs a bit of work still, but there's a discord where people have been chatting with the creator about what direction to go. There's already an update out that adds emotional conditions as HP, with various ways to heal them. On my phone so I can't post it, but stuff like getting the Angry condition and heal it by breaking stuff. All conditions can be healed by "Take comfort in the arms of a classmate" though. Upcoming changes will condense some classe and break others up, with who knows what happening to Paths and Extracurricular Activities.

LWA has, like, no budget. The second OVA had to go to kickstarter, and only succeeded because western fans made it happen.

Its a passion project that is more for us than for local japanese otaku. So it gets a lot of praise, because this is TRIGGER saving anime.

That's not bad animation, bruh. Pretty much anyone in the industry will tell you that the sense of weight and inertia present in parts of that webm is not easy to do.

A whole ton of the animation in LWA is really good, especially the effects stuff.

I'd say that Trigger's approach to great animation - rather than focus on the beauty being constant even during static shots (like it happens with Fate, for example), Trigger balances out by having REALLY good action animation (unless the gag is having shit animation in the first place - like Inferno Cop or Kill la Kill's moments of limited animation) when it needs to - compare and contrast the momentum of the camera in LWA with the momentum in other series and you'll see what I mean.

I'm actually kind of mad about how the show treats Sucy. She seemed like she was up to all kinds of stuff in the OVA and was easily the most competent of the 3 with her focus on potions that actually did stuff. TV Sucy just memes about mushrooms a lot.

From one of the more memorable characters to one of the worst.

The rest of the show is good, but it just feels like they got incredibly lazy writing Sucy. Even her focus episode is just a bunch of nonsensical dream shit, unlike Lotte's nightfall episode which actually gave her some unique character aspects.

That's why the creator is making a new, better ruleset. Better balanced classes, so some are getting broken up and others are being combined, Major and Minor courses changed, Path and Extracurricular choices seem to be headed for doing more than skills, etc. Actual spell lists. And something about how characters can get physically injured but heal it by getting over the emotions that go with the injury. You can't just heal broken legs with a spell, you have to also work through being angry at whatever mistake earned you broken legs. But don't worry, PCs can't die and there's no hidden darknesses in the world because this is supposed to be like LWA or HP.

PCs can certainly die. They just won't die out of nowhere... just like how health points work in most systems. You need to accumulate five conditions before you can be 'taken out'. Whether that means unconscious or dead depends on the scenario.

There can be a hidden darkness in the world if you want. So far the setting is very open-ended, if it's going to be existent in the final edition at all.

Mind control, Time Travel, and to a degree polymorphing enemies are all cancerous rpg powers. But not because they are ineffective, but bad because they are violations of the contract of the game.

RPGs hinge on the concept that the players control their characters, and the GM controls everything else. Blur those lines at your own peril.

Lets think of it this way: if you were in a game where the GM described a situation where you were about to fight a giant sea serpent, and one of the players said "no we are not. We are fighting a small squirrel instead" that would be bullshit, right?

But thats literally what baleful polymorph does. And thats bad design.

I think I get where you're coming from, and while I don't agree entirely, I will agree that having too much of such power available to any PC or NPC can be a hassle. Still, taking it all out entirely prevents the use of such famed creatures as gorgons, basilisks or even a vampire with their dominating will.

One issue I see in this particular system is tge lack of "defense" against magic. If someone succesfully casts a spell, that's it, spell works and the target has no way to avoid it. Maybe if such potent effects still had a way to avoid them they would be less OP?

Making them balanced would require system bloat in the form of counters and defenses, abd really you dont get anything good from allowing them in the first place.

The system still results in those powers being no more threatening than someone spamming a Grade F fire spell. Both cases require 5 casts, or more if the DM is supposed to make several soft moves before a hard move, since only the hard moves are supposed to result in conditions and you need 5 to get taken out.
