The idea behind roleplaying games is acting a PC that you made up that is not you, right? You could say that PC does not know the stuff you know, and that is all fine dandy and can be regulated with KNOWLEDGE checks, I have no issue with that.
But what I have an issue is when players use (((SOCIAL))) skills in order to resolve conversations, they want to roll instead of roleplaying it out. Now I get it its supposed to represent "muh randomness" and "muh skill difference", but really do we need that in conversations? You can have fucking +100 to diplomacy or persuasion but some things just can't be talked out off. If you say the wrong word no roll will save you from your fuck-up but in rollplaying games it will save you.
If systems are to remove the social skills how would the hobby go? Would it reduce the levels of autisam because you can't find a way out of speaking because you can't roll or what? What do you guys think on this?
>>52810010
I think it's fine when it works out for the players, even from a GM side, it's about the player experience, If it's player to player chat, it is really stupid. It should be more based on the character, and how they want to play them. Not long ago, I played a character that stole from everyone on day one, and covered every base of security. None of the other player characters were the suspicious sort, and I was playing my character as a stealthy type, but because i miraculously whiffed a roll while lying they "detected I was lying" and the GM told them everything I did, which soured the rest of the game while I played that character since they played their characters from then on as expecting the worst. It's not the kind of thing I want to put a player on the other side of in a game I would run, so if they did come up with a plan, I'd make the check at least easier unlike my GM did there.
>>52810010
It's an abstraction for the sake of game pace. It's the same reason why the GM doesn't make you swing a sword around in a particular fighting style instead of making an attack roll.
>>52810010
I think it's happened because a lot of socially awkward roleplayers would rather roll dice than have to give an in character soliloquy.
It's less that it's taking over the hobby, and more that it's a product of having a hobby that involves a lot of shy or socially awkward people.
How do I run a good sandbox game?
>>52809816
Most important things thing is players that don't have to be handheldall the time, other than have a lot of general loose plans and be prepared to adapt to your players actions.
>>52809816
You don't. A good sandbox game has a player/PC driven plot or plots. That, by the way, is why they often fail, since most players are absolute dogshit at actually driving a plot.
But assuming you have a player group that is capable of doing this, all you need to do is make a detailed setting with lots of opportunity for conflict but none of it moving very quickly, get someone in the group to commit to a goal or goals, and watch them go.
>>52809816
I've never dungeon mastered, but I would recommend making encounter tables and quick dungeons for your world's regions.
Rolled 22 (1d26)
Sekhmet Sins @ Council of /HHG/ Edition
2W Sub-Edition
We talked about power levels, lots of them. How Sevatar's rules suck despite being in Siggy tier, which termies deserve 2W, the plethora of sins comitted in Inferno, especially the TS's and SW scythe thievery. We helped fluff unconventional alliances, which I personally love to doeven if I don't always get (You)s. All Primarchs dress like shit, which is a shame because we'd like better bits for our Consul self-inserts, but apparently FW hates both money and sensible rules.
All of that and more in the previous thread, which was actually quite comfy, let's keep it up. -> >>52793605

Why does this game get so much hate here?
>>52808977
It doesn't, it has a constant general. It just stays in it's fucking general unlike 40k. It's niche, nothing more.
But if you want meme answers
>Steampunk
>>52809017
Praise be to the Emperor.
I thought it was the cringey "You gotta play like you gotta pair" page from the rulebook.
Ships come into the solar system, begin mining and creating more ships. They spread to every planet except for the Earth & Moon. Any attempts at communication are ignored and any probes that get close enough are broken down for resources.
What does humanity do?
>>52808790
The only thing we're good at.
Irrational warfare.
Fuck off we're full.
>>52808811
'''''Irrational'''''
I bet you like it when someone cuts down all the trees surrounding your property.
>>52808790
scream into the darkness like we always do, happier now that we know its full of passive aggressive strangers like we always assumed. Someday we will approach them as equals, and as they proceed to enact their un-rationalized destruction upon us, we will do the same, and call it an economic exchange.
Can we talk about magic? Not mechanical aspects of it in games, just the ideas related to it. Specifically, where the "energy" that allows it to happen comes from, and how it is actually done.
Most games don't really get into these aspects too much. What mana is and where it comes from isn't really touched on and how exactly the wizard goes about casting the spell is generally not very expanded upon either.
Take summoning for instance; when a wizard summons something is that something being created out of thin air or literally being transported from some place to his location. How much control over this action does he have? Can he summon in the same particular demon or skeleton multiple times? Does he just grab a fire elemental from the plane of elemental fire at complete random? Is it possible that he might accidently grab something entirely different from that realm? And by what power does he do this? Does he have a covenant with that creature? Some agreement? Is there a cost, beyond just mana or whatever, and if there is a cost, who is paid it and why do they want it?
I don't really have a coherent question here, I just want to talk about the sources of magic and how its performed because I think thats neat.
I go with the classic demons and shit. Gives reason to why all my settings powerful wizards are either dead, or bat shit insane
>>52807666
When it comes to summoning I think it should be something in the middle,
It's like the universe is a computer and the spell itself is an algorithm that if made complete does a single thing that you tried.
But if rendered incomplete the spell just completes itself using whatever sounds natural.
So if you're trying to summon a fire elemental in a volcano, that would be easy, even if you mispronounce it's name you'll probably hand up with just another fire elemental with a similar name.
Botch the same spell in an underwater cave, and suddenly your hand is on fire, because the cosmic computer thought it looks pretty close.
>So wizards are basically I.T. guys
Yes
Also
Demon summoning should involve taking a demon out of his nap
>ALWAYS
Elementals probably can be made like Golems, with the wizard imbuing the 'soul'
>>52807666
It comes from farts. The more farting that goes on, the more powerful magic is. That's why the setting's wizard guild heavily subsidizes bean crops.
Why do dwarfs always carry axes? What trees are they chopping down underground exactly?
>>52807300
Because Gimli used an axe and he is THE iconic fantasy dwarf.
They aren't fucking troglodytes. I'm sure they harvest lumber above ground.
>>52807389
It's clearly not their main business, though. Wouldn't it have made far more sense for them to be using picks?
Whats everyone's thoughts? It's coming out tomorrow.
>>52807190
Maybe it'll put an end to Soulsborn rpg beg threads, but probably not?
>>52807222
Honestly, I'm not a fan if the game, I like the gothic Cthulhu look though and want the game.
I'm actually looking to be convinced its trash.
>>52807222
The thing is that you can't really make souls an rpg. At least not one thats anything special. Everything in souls is based on the gameplay and the map; gameplay isn't something you can really emulate in tabletop settings and the map would have to be GM made.
Tell me of the great space wars of your setting.
>>52807179
Once, there were a bunch of civilizations
And then they threw RKKVs at each other, and every died
The end
>>52807179
The First great space war happened in 2044, in the midst of WW3 when an group of Allied patrol Frigates (Space Tourism bus-shuttles with welded on machineguns) faced down two Russian Space Battleships (space debris garbage trucks with glued on missile racks). The only damage from the battle happened when one of the missile racks tore off one of the Russian battleships due to high G maneuvers and when an Allied frigate flew into its own machinegun volley and suffered minor hull damage. The only injury involved one of the frigate crews forgetting to belt in, flying out of his chair and slamming into the ships coffee machine.
>>52807179
Well, there are so many space battles in the world of futuristic Warhammer that it'd be impossible to tell you of them all. One of my favourites is the one with the world engine though. Great death starr-esque robot alien ship shielded to invulnerability that passes human worlds and strips them of all life. A massive fleet is gather but then get their asses handed to them until one entire chapter suicide charges and rams their flagship through the shields and boards the World engine. They blow it up although out of nearly a thousand of their genetically enhanced super soldiers only a handful survive.
ITT we come up with a cheap, reasonable alternative to space marines that could accomplish the same/similar goals and could be employed en-masse in the fashion of the imperial guard.
>>52807041
Isn't that Scions/storm troopers?
>>52807091
scions are exceptionally well trained but they certainly aren't super soldiers. I was thinking develop rudimentary power armor for them that would enable them to carry space marine weapons and substitute genetic modifications with combat drugs.

This week's Monday Meeting Notes:
http://theonyxpath.com/princes-gambit-its-final-nights-on-kickstarter-monday-meeting-notes/
>Question:
What's your favorite character that you've ever played in a WoD game?
So what happens if a human who was created as a component of a demon's Cover gets Embraced, or Awakens, or something?
>>52806765
Cover is part of the demon isn't it?
>>52806591
How do you know it's a thing if you haven't looked it up? What do you even look up?
>>52806653
Vampire:
Tzimisce absolute fucking monster, or an OD Nosferatu who's much of the same. Fuck Touchstones. Had another OD with Malkavia who found out that Dementation actually works on the Strix.
Werewolf:
Havent't got a NWoD woof who sticks out yet, but I used to have a Bone Gnawer who ripped on other tribes like 24/7. "Black Furies, huh, they ain't even BLACK, yall!"
Mage:
NWO operative who said things that made people question their very existence. Was actually able to work with a mostly Trad group without fucking them all.
Or my attempt at creating cyborgs in Awakening. Gotta say it worked pretty well, as long as they weren't sleepers. ~I~ never tried it on sleepers, but the Guardians tried to frame me for it.
Wraith:
Never got to play, but I had a cryonics researcher who got frozen as part of a prank gone wrong in Sin-Eaters. His Geist looks like a frozen caveman corpse, claims to be that old, but it's probably bullshit.
Let's get a fantasy book thread going. Recommend some good fantasy/sci fi readings.
Anyone know if the Ed Greenwood forgotten realms books are any good?
>>52806010
YA is acceptable too, I suppose.
I read the first three of these books when I was like 13. Is it worth reading the rest?
UK folks might know it as the Spook's series, because you can't say spook in America.
>>52806010
It's a good book, especially after the whole first half of the book of stupid romance it gets really freaking good. I'd recommend a read.
Inb4 somebody recommends Scott Lynch. Stay away from that crap and you'll live longer. True story.
I need edgy, spooky, nature-y type guys wearing bones and animal/monster skulls, please.
So, like, evil druids?
This thread got me inspired to make this thread, so oil up your robes and pray to the machine god, becuase we are making a titan legion!
