Is it a good idea or a terrible idea to let the party run their own business in a game?

How much is the business going to play into the game itself? It could serve as a way for them to do various things or be a game in and of itself.

So I have a female tiefling who I wish to be a cavalier and id like to know how stat wise that kind of thing would work out. This is pathfinder. The order I'm considering taking is order of the shield. Is it shit or would be relatively alright?

If you have decent STR and CON I don't see why not. Same as any martial class.

So ya....a tiefling cav would be shit.

>demon cavalier riding a demonic mount

Why are so many RPG players, D&D and otherwise, so scared of death or permanent change? I'm not even speaking in an OSR mindset where players are fragile, but in a communal narrative mindset where a character's death (or disfigurement) can add a lot to the campaign and group's collective story. But it seems like every discussion forum (including /tg/) is full of people agonizing over a single death in their party. In particular, D&D 3.pf players seem to be the worst at this, expecting their special snowflakes to last forever.

Creating bloodbaths is bad DMing (unless everyone wants that). Creating no-win scenarios that would doom the entire party is usually bad DMing. Keeping the party near invincible with retconning and limitless resurrections, where nothing really matters, is horrible DMing.

Is it possible to introduce danger to a party without them running off because they're afraid of death?

Probably partially encouraged by character build mechanics, partially because people become attached to characters over time, but also the people it happens to who are okay with character death don't complain. Its part of their game/isn't a problem for them, so they don't reee about it here.
>>
>>52777833
Different people have different preferences but, in general, systems these days are based around the assumption you'll make a character you really like and it will tend to survive.

The threat of death is just there to make your victories sweeter, really.
>>
>>52777932
That's kind of the problem, the threat of death is minimized and victories are hollow.

Does your character have any pets or animal companions?
My paladin has a horse (naturally), which he named Dog, because dogs are noble and loyal companions of humanity who have stood by them since the birth of civilization.

He also has a dog, a Welsh Corgi. He named it Horse. Because Horses are noble and loyal companions of humanity who have stood beside them since the dawn of civilization.

Once, a villain tried to hurt his dog, Horse. This ended very, very badly for him. We don't talk about it anymore.

The Ballad of Mardnob
Following a job opportunity, I had moved to a new city. I couldn’t make the 5E D&D League hosted by the local games shops, due to spending most of my nights working. So I turned to meetup.com to find a group, eventually, I found one that fit in with my schedule. It was a 2nd Ed game, but I had played earlier editions, and didn’t mind the nostalgia. So I commented that I was interested, and waited for a reply. Later, the DM pinged me, asking for a Skype interview. I’d never been interviewed to join a game before, but I figured my “roleplay resume” was up-to-par.
Having passed the interview process, we set up a time for me to make my character. After some small talk, we sat down to generate my character. The DM had programmed his own DM-client tool, which aside from the horrendous UI, was actually fairly well done. He then turned to me and asked, “What kind of concept do you have in mind?”
Now, for those not familiar with earlier editions. One does not simply come to the table with a “concept.” Au contraire, thou must leave such decisions to the mercy of RNG. Certain classes had minimum stat requirements, and on a straight 4d6 6 times drop the lowest dice? You’re probably not going to get that CHA 17 for paladin any time soon… So I reply, “Let’s see what the dice say.”

>>
This should have been my first red flag, as he got into a bit of a huff about my lack of “preparedness.” At last, I’m able to just roll some dice. I come out with decent stats, enough to meet the requirements for a Halfling psionicist/thief (multi-classing was weird in earlier editions). He chimes, “You know, with those stats and you thinking about psionicist, how does being a Betazoid sound?”
Mentally pausing, my multi-nerdom cultured mind queries for the origin of that word. The result, Star Trek. Turning, I asked, “Wait, a Betazoid? You mean like Star Trek, with like Klingons and that stuff?”
He responds, “Yes.”
I continue, “In a Tolkien-inspired setting?”
He once again replies, “Yes.”
I might be an old-fashioned gamer, but there are certain combinations of nerdom that should not mix. Classic DnD and Star Trek being one of them. Don’t take me wrong, a table-top Star Trek? That does sound fun, but I’m getting off topic.
Sighing, I start to state that I’m not terribly interested in this… “Setting.” To which he assures me that his Sunday game (the one I was joining), had like-minded individuals, who also wanted a more by-the-book DnD game. You know, just with the occasional forehead ridge or green-blooded “elf” running around. Needing to sate my RPG withdrawal, I agree to continue. So, yes, you can say I brought what follows onto myself, but I needed my fix, man.
Having finished generating my character, I figure I’m done by this point, and say I’ll come up with a back story for my character before the game. Nope, you remember that aforementioned DM-client? Oh… son, you thought the new Volo’s Guide had a plethora of character choices? You aint seen nothin’. First, we had to generate my character’s history.
>>
Go on...
>>
Resulting in her somehow ending up in “Not-Mongolia” as a ward of some lord. Now, this raises a few issues, first being, for a man who threw a hissy over me not having a “character concept.” Between this auto-generated history and the mechanics of the system, how could anyone come to the table with a “concept?” Next issue, my character had to be from the region the party was currently in, and lastly my character had to be a member of the Federation. I ask, “Why does my character have to be a member of the Federation? Can’t she be a native?”
Apparently, it would lead to all manner of complications with the rest of the party, who supposedly wanted a “by-the-book” game, oh and the “Prime Directive.” We’ll put a pin in the Prime Directive for now. So next I ask, “Wait, I’m from a world where there are psionicists, and people with magic that can read people’s mind. You’re telling me not one of them has probed a Federation mind?”
Somehow, through a combination of technology, magic and psionic whatever the Federation had been able to block off all parts of the mind relating to the Federation. Which then leads to, “So, if this blocks off a “part” of my mind. Why didn’t they just block off all of my mind?” Cause the ability to just ignore Mindflayer (and similar creatures) abilities as a psionicist? Hell yeah! Nope, didn’t work that way cause of “reasons.”

So, I have been putting together a setting for the game I run in a pathfinder setting, I have a good set of ideas for The Greater gods the ones that are for Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos. But I need help fleshing out the lesser gods in the pantheons and I don't want to use the premade stuff

It is more so cleric players feel like they have options and I like the idea of lesser gods.
>>
>>52776867
I've always like the way Thieves world handled gods.

>Gods are immortal, and powerful beings
>Each God lives in its own paradise plane (inaccessible to mortals and even other gods)
>Each god is limited to it's home plane, unless it focuses on a follower. This is the only means (other than an avatar summoning), that the god has of seeing or knowing what's happening on the prime plane
>The gods seldom directly speak to followers
>the gods are forbidden by "powers", from entering the prime plane (no exceptions)
>The god that loses all it's followers no longer has a connection to the prime plane, and slowly forgets about it, and retires away to his home plane, and lives forever there, with his dead followers...(basically on the prime plane, the god is dead at that point)
>gods can be greatly weakened by killing on of their avatars, so the gods seldom risk sending one

With that in mind, you can pick almost any 'theme' and make a minor god. Since the likelyhood of a god clash, is almost nonexistent.

A god/goddess of luck. A god of chance. A god of gambling. A god of bets. A god of challenges. A god of sports. A god of races. A god of cards. A god of skilled betting. A god of cons. A god of drinking games. All are fine in the same setting, because there's no 'clash' or overlap of the gods.

That's how I'd handle lesser gods. There would be thousands, but most people wouldn't even know who they are, since they're largely uninterested in our plane, as their home plane, is literally paradise to them.

I'm interested too. I'm shit at romance irl and even shittier as a DM.
>>
>>52776302
depends what you're going for
>if it's a nice, romantic subplot for one of the PCs, let the player initiate, have the NPC open up to them slowly as they get to know each other better
>If you want drama, pick an important NPC, figure out who the worst person for them to be in love with would be, and go from there
most importantly leave it open to change, love is a fickle thing, it can and should change over the course of the game

So /tg/, I've had an idea for a homebrew about space ancapitalism. It would basically be rogue trader except you can get away with pretty much anything as long as it doesn't violate the NAP (the same applies to NPCs as well of course). What I need though are ideas for companies and scenarios that would make for a fun session. The more outrageous, over-the-top and insane the better. Anyone got any ideas?

Lawful Good alignment is one of the more "headcanon-prone" branches of the alignment tree. You have people who state it's about being good and staying true to your own personal code of law, people who say it's about being good and obeying all lawful authorities, people who say it's about promoting good by way of law, and probably a dozen other variants I can't be bothered to think of. Needless to say, if the player has one interpretation of lawful good and the DM has another, conflict happens. This is especially problematic because of people having a tendency to conflate Lawful Good with Lawful Neutral, and thusly have supposedly lawful good characters believe simply "Law = Good".

Other classes with alignment ties are usually more broad in aspect. Being Lawful or Chaotic is a lot broader and easier to define, more or less, than Lawful Good is. The one other class that had similar amounts of alignment pain, the Druid, actually underwent a revision from 2e (where it HAD to be True Neutral - and True Neutral was defined in the most *ridiculous* fashion) because WoTC realized just how stupid its original alignment ties were.

Players of Paladins are well-aware that their grasp on their powers, and thus their ability to not be sub-par fighters, depends on cleaving to their alignment. Thusly, many players over-emphasise in order to avoid falling... and tend to take it into directions that just tick off the DM and/or the rest of the party. Hence the "Paladins Suck!" meme that keeps bubbling around D&D and, to an extent, Pathfinder.

As part of the "Killer DM" school of thought, some DMs enjoy puzzling out ways to cause Paladins to fall, either as a punishment for a bad paladin player, as a way of generating a backstory for a fallen/anti-paladin villain, or just for the fun of it.
