Whenever the topic of license games comes up, it's all about 8- and 16-bit games and I've been wondering if there is actually good stuff in 3D. Now 3D games as whole weren't exactly on top of their game back then and the big Japanese developers that made those beloved 2D games were largly busy doing there own thing, but surely there's got to be something.

pic related is obviously great. A really competent shooter.

I thought it was pretty meh gameplay-wise, but the cutscenes were great and I'm impressed that they got all the VA's from the movie back.
>>
The first GITS game is very enjoyable in a mindless fun kind of way. It's also a great companion to the first movie (more than I can say about the SAC games)

I think the gameplay is anything but meh. I can understand it may not be for everyone, but it's unique, nothing like it.

It actually is one of my favorite PS1 games.

Also great techno soundtrack.

What the ACTUAL fuck does he really say? Is it even from the manga?
>>
>>2856050
He's saying "Aite no stand tsukaika!" ("Is that an enemy stand user?!") IIRC this is said as a vs. partner is coming in during story mode.

I also like that any villains' (or maybe just Dio, I forget) quote is slightly different, I think it's "Nanimono da?" (Something like "What was that?", since a villain would be cautious of the Part 3 crew the wohle time.

I don't know if it's exactly from the manga, but as a long-time Jojofag I'll tell you Capcom of the time was the only company that ever, retro or no, that understood the Jojo vibe completely, so I trust pretty much all the liberties they took.

No need, they got it right the first time.

Metal Marines is based as fuck.
>>

Played it on Windows.
I remember being able to see the missiles flying over from one window to another (on Win95 with larger resolution you can drag the windows anywhere and the missiles will still fly appropriately), you might even guess their missile base locations that way.
And yeah, it gets pretty hectic.

So, scalping faggots have finally driven me away from collecting, and I'm looking to learn Japanese and start collecting imports instead after learning that almost every Super Famicom game ever sells for about $5-$20

Have any of you learned japspeak just to play imports? How long did it take to be able to play games in japanese?

Do you enjoy collecting now that you aren't paying $70+ for any game that is remotely enjoyable?

By the time I became literate in Japanese my interests mostly changed and I played a lot less video games. I think it took me about two years of study before I could play anything and not have it be an excruciating, headache inducing experience every time or having to look something up once for every sentence. I couldn't answer the last question; most of the games I've imported have been 3DS or PS2 stuff and some PS1 games. I stick with emulators for older generations.

Playing video games is an excellent reason to learn Japanese but you should expect to sink a lot of time in it and treat it as a second hobby.
>>
>>2855160
>Have any of you learned japspeak just to play imports?

Yes and no. It was really more of a genuine curiosity borne from a broader interest in language.

>How long did it take to be able to play games in japanese?

Let me assume you mean "How long might it take me to able able to play games in Japanese?"

If you want to dedicate all your free time to independent study, you should have sufficient reading skills and vocabulary within several weeks. Maybe if the games are rendered in kana only, or have an option to disable kanji display.

Japanese grammar is very simple. Incredibly simple compared to English. The primary writing system (kana) is also incredibly simple by comparison. Your initial hurdle will be overcoming your existing lack of knowledge about languages and grammar in general - e.g. things like how to identify parts of speech. Japanese, of course, doesn't have all the same parts of speech as English, applies different rules to syntax, and has different ways of illustrating relationships between nouns and verbs.
>>
>>2855191
Any games you would recommend playing as practice while learning the language?

It might be more fun to study if I'm translating a game as I play

hey /vg/

I'm planning on building a computer for my son on his 6th birthday (I have plenty of time - he's 7 weeks old). I am also building a list of old games he needs to play. the list so far is as follows:

Quake, Day of the Tenticle, Worms, Lemmings, Sim City 2000, Commander Keen, Monkey Island, Tomb Raider. Haven't even started on console games.

Can you recommend any? Alternatively, what would your kids' first computer contain?

Is the raspberry pi good for emulation? I hear a lot of hate for it but it's cheap and retropie is easy to set up and maintain. What's a good alternative?
>>
>>2819610
Rpi 2 is great. Plays SNES/PS1 and everything older than those perfectly, except for maybe some MAME stuff? I'm not familiar with how it handles mame. If you're looking for n64/ps2/psp/nds/ngc/wii emulation you may need to look towards using a more conventional computer, but if you're not RPI2 is perfect.

I use Lakka instead of Retropie, but they're both fine. Lakkas just easier for me to setup and configure perfectly cause I'm familiar with retroarch

This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

Would /vr/ like a daily high score thread? Something where we all play an old arcade game, post a screenshot of our scores, and whoever wins gets nothing?
Could even keep a google doc of every day's leaderboards

ITT: Stupid shit you did as a kid
Pic related. The only CIB game i ever got from my parents was Conker's bad fur day (they tough that the game was for kids), it was a birthday present, the first thing i did was rip the box open and i threw the fucking box and manuals to the trash can, now it just hurts, because now im the kind of guy that collects that shit.
Any stories you can share with this fellow anon ?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I threw away all my boxes like 10 minutes after getting games as a kid too. But I kept the manuals at least. As I got older I started saving my GB Color and GBA boxes when i bought new games, but at some point when i had lost interest in gaming i threw the boxes away like an idiot. I also took a knife and SCRATCHED my name into almost every console and controller i had back then, and when i got mad at my NES games i would BITE the controller as hard as i could like an autistic tardbabby, so all my original controllers and systems look like they've been thru hell and back. I've took some plastic polish and removed most of the scratches and i use the bitten up controllers for parts but it does make me shake my head at how stupid i was as a kid.
>>
Even though I kept the jewel cases for my PS1 games, I still just stacked the discs in piles when not using them. Scratches galore

I also scratched some of my favorite PS1 games recently by playing them in a shitty PS2 slim. Even though they still work, they now have ugly ring scratches on them.
>>
>>2861096
it's a terrible way to go through life being afraid of what you'll throw away. that's the road to hoarding.

a few years ago I just gave away my copy of conker to a coworker. you know why? because it's a shitty game. after using cheat codes to see all the levels, I never played it again because it was unplayably difficult.

if I still had it, I'd absolutely sell it. it's worthless to me as a game.
