what do i do in a new city?
will be going to montreal alone (i'm from Toronto), but have no clue what to do really.
do i just walk around, see the sights (biodome, botanical gardens, parks), restaurants and bars?

i'm awkward and shy. is there a good way to meet new people as a tourist? i'm pretty anxious about going alone to restaurants and bars (usually things you do with friends)

i haven't traveled alone before, and when i did travel it was only family trips. what do i need to know to make the most of my time?

I'm planning to do the same as you anon. I've heard that it's better to stay at a youth hostel with good reviews, since they provide events/pub crawls for patrons and it's an easy way to meet/talk with other people. Walking alone and seeing the sights seems kind of lame unless you already have an interest in that location (like if your a history buff who enjoys seeing landmarks of particular events)

Worth a visit to Kazakhstan and in the particular the north area of the country (near Astana)?

How is the nightlife and its population? The girls are pretty and open-mind?

It's expensive to live in Astana??

Thank you guys!

>The girls are pretty and open-minded
>Worth a visit?

You can get drunk and have sex in your own country. I wouldn't recommend going to Kazakhstan if you just want to sit around in some dingy city and try to seduce local girls.

You do you, I guess, but your questions are pretty simplistic. Go look at Roosh V or some shit if you want to know about le sexy game.

Middle East safety thread.

Next summer I want to go to Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. Anyone been to any of these countries? How safe did you feel? I was planning on travelling by bus from Egypt to Israel but after the plane going down in the Sinai peninsuila it has made me think I am going to start in Egypt, fly to Jordan, then go overland to Israel, then back to Jordan to fly to Lebanon. I am aware the situation can change quickly. I am thinking I may as well go now because for all we know the whole region could turn into another Syria, and then I would not be able to go for decades. Thoughts /trv/? Is it very dangerous?

So you were going to take a bus between Israel and Egypt until the plane bombing, and now you're going to take a plane instead?
>>
>>1049919
Well it made me assume that there are terrorists operating at points in the Sinai peninsuila. Fliying over it only takes an hour, driving through it takes like 8. More chance of encountering said terrorists.

There are, unadvertised but public flights from Cairo direct to Tel Aviv, run by a subsidiary of Air Egypt. They really are secret, to the extent of not having their destination displayed on the screens at Cairo airport, thanks to Arab and Muslim stupidity, so you may have to find a good travel agent to sell you tickets, but it should be possible.

Reposting from last thread since it was the last post.

Gonna be in Japan for 2 weeks in December. Gotta question about prostitution and brothels. I'm half Taiwanese and passable as Japanese. The problem is I speak zero Japanese. You think I'd be able to get into places that dont cater to foreigners? Or will language be my main problem? Think if I found a Japanese friend he could take to to exclusive places? Also what's the best district in Tokyo to find prostitution and brothels?

>I'm half Taiwanese and passable as Japanese. The problem is I speak zero Japanese. You think I'd be able to get into places that dont cater to foreigners? Or will language be my main problem?

No and yes. No one gives a shit if you kinda maybe look Japanese. If you're a foreigner who doesn't speak Japanese then that's what you are. Language is of course the main thing. How can they be sure you'll understand the rules and the system. Or have proper communication with the girl.

>Think if I found a Japanese friend he could take to to exclusive places?
Try it why not. But hes not gonna be in the room with you to talk to the girl. The same concerns apply.

>Also what's the best district in Tokyo to find prostitution and brothels

Shinjuku (Kabuki cho) and Yoshiwara. For you, Yoshiwara, as it has several joints that cater to foreiners with pretty decent looking girls.

What kinds of travelers do you automatically dislike?

Me:

>people who have backpacks with "countries I've visited" flags sewn onto them
>hostel creeps who have no game and spend every night trying to get different women drunk
>women who have been in a new country for two days and are already meeting guys off Tinder and bitching about their newly created drama
>hippies who are inspired by the "spirituality" of dirt-poor people
>the dude who's been staying in the same hostel for two months and thinks he's an expert on the country
>"yea i been fokked up for da last week ay, why is i gonna be here if i aint' gnna party hards erry night nd trna fuk wid da local bitches ya dig"

Airport thread anyone?

What's your local airport? Best airport you've been to, and the worst?

My local is Leeds/Bradford. In fact, not long ago I lived very close, to the point where planes would be flying ridiculously low over my house and drowning everything out. It's a standard provincial British airport, so nothing special, but you can go pretty much anywhere in Europe from there now, which is good as it saves me having to slog over to Manchester. Jet2 are based there, and they're always expanding by the year.

Best airport was probably Mahon in Spain. I just remember it being nice, clean, not many queues, nice and modern looking, and just easy. Skiathos in Greece is a cool little airport. There was a cafe we'd sometimes go to, right at the end of the runway, and the incoming planes would literally fly past us, rather than over us.

Worst has to be one of the many I've been to in Egypt. Cairo, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, Abu Simbel and Aswan. All utter shitholes. Corfu wasn't too great either. For the sheer amount of traffic the place handles, it's fucking tiny, to the point where we were told to queue outside in the midday sun until they could open a check-in for our flight. The place was just overcrowded. It was pretty great if you enjoy watching planes before you fly though, as there was constant movement outside.

Big airports I've been to like Heathrow and Amsterdam all just feel the same to me.

my local ones are istanbul ataturk and sabiha gökcen. atatürk is nice, sabiha is a pit of despair for me because i always end up being there way too early, i'll end up having my flight delayed (curse you, turkish airlines) etc. but i hear the lounges are really nice.

i recently flew to trabzon airport which is a beautiful regional airport, just one runway with the black sea directly on one side. very nice. photo related

Worst airport?
Far and away CDG in Paris. Design is terrible, staff are rude and condescending, you have to take buses to get around the airport, random construction half-heartedly going on, detour signs that lead to nowhere, and, to top it all off, they lost my luggage on a connecting flight. I'll never fly through Paris again if I can avoid it.

So lets talk about booze and travel. What's your favorite drink when traveling? Do you guys seek out locally made alcohol or drinks that are popular in the given region when you travel there? What drinks have you tried abroad for the first time and then started drinking them when you got back home?

I don't usually drink sweet alcohol drinks, pretty much drink beer 90% of the times I drink any alcohol but when I went to the Caribbean I totally loved all the mixed drinks they made there. The mojitos there were so much better than the ones I have back here, maybe it's due to the warm weather, maybe due to the atmosphere, but they never taste the same here. This rum and coconut liqueur is pretty good, definitely not something I would have tried at home for the first time.

Real absinthe in Spain. I usually smuggle a few bottles back stateside. Porto wine I had in Lisbon was awesome. Wines in Italy were great, and there was this crazy wine in Italy, I think it was homemade, it was at some dude's house. You'd be stuffed, drink it, then be read for the next course. Ate for hours.

Also, for Thailand, though Chang seems to be the farang beer of choice, I much prefer Singha. My first time having a Strongbow was in Spain, but too sweet for me to drink regularly. Only have drunken it when abroad, though not just Europe. I'm American, if I haven't mentioned. I drank Dahl's beer in Norway and took a Dahl's glass home from the bar/club. Which is another habit I have. I have a Strongbow glass as well. In fact, almost every glass I have either came from a bar, restaurant, liquor gift set, souvenir, or a keepsake from some ball/event/place. I think I have one legit normal glass.

Though Jack Daniel is popular in the US, and can reasonably be called a mid shelf whiskey, I was amazed at how popular it is overseas. I actually never bought my own bottle stateside before purchasing regularly while overseas. It was just the easiest whiskey to get a hold of. And the massive 3 litre bottles were cool. I started drinking scotch after drinking it abroad.

I think Blue Frog is my favorite thing I come across. Long Island Ice Tea has nothing on this. This is a very popular club drink in the Middle East, at least in the countries that allow alcohol (Bahrain/UAE). The youtube video saus it's from Serbia, but I don;t know the actual origins. There is another variation called Red Frog. Bluw frog is essentially a bunch of liquors mixed together, but you can't tast the alcohol so you get pretty fucked off it, and many clubs sell it by the pitcher. I made them for a while myself when I got back home, but it can be expensive to do all the time because of all the different alcohols you have to buy.

Hey guys, need some help from any Germans here.

I have this sick ex-airforce coat with shitty old shoulderboards I put on myself. It is the thickest and best jacket I own and I'm planning a trip to Europe, including Germany.

Basically, all I wanna know is will I be legally allowed to wear this with all the anti-military laws? Shoulder boards will be removed if it's necessary.
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1053676
Yes, you will be able to wear that. Jesus. Does it have a Swastika on it? Does it have an SS Totenkopf on it? If yes, then you wouldn't be able to wear it.
>>
>>1053676
I wouldn't out of courtesy, though. A lot of people take that seriously, at least in America. I've seen people get punched for shit like that. At most a field jacket or something, but if you come off looking military and aren't there might be that one dude that shoves you around.
>>
>>1053677

No, nothing like that. The closest thing to any insignia are the boards and they don't even properly match it.
Just triple checking though, I don't wanna get in legal shit abroad.

>>1053678

I've never had a problem here, being an Aussie and all. But Germans may be different, and from what I've heard, the only way people actually get offended is if you claim to have served or wear medals that would imply you have. Which I will definitely not be doing.

Hey /trv/

A friend and I are planning our third roadtrip to the US this year. We have a two-weeks possibility this oncoming february. We don't know how is the situation in Oregon, Washington and Northern California. We also consider driving from Miami to Houston.

Any advice on good winter itinerary ? What roadtrips have you taken ?

Why Miami to Houston? Sounds like a pretty dull route. Drove home from Houston to NC once after a plane transport foul-up, it was not vacation-worthy.

How bad is it ? We wanted to go south to have at least decent temperature !

It's either we go up north and deal with it, but then we're afraid that roads are going to be either closed or messed up, or we go south but to me it seems a bit dull as you say. However as we're from Switzerland driving in the US is pretty cool for us anyway

I have recently acquired my first relatively stable job which I am going to work hard at to save for travel.

I currently live in Queensland, Australia and have never been out of state let alone overseas (except when i was a child i went to new zealand breifly but that doesnt really count)

Where should I go for my first real holiday?
How much money will i need?
Should i go alone or with friends?
Is holidaying/travelling good?

Please tell me your stories and provide advice.

Thanks :D

Heyo guise,
I'm going to spend 1 Month in the capital of the (Islamic State of) Iran.

Gerfag, will meet and stay with locals mainly.
It's 70/30 % artsy project-work/vacation.
So, for the free-time: What do when in Tehran?
Has anybody been there? (Highlights for photography, anyone?)

Normally, I go for food, weird/strange sceneries, nightlife, getting lost in big cities, females, music - in no particular order.
For the beautiful iranian chicks, I'm pretty much out this time, because gf, also Sharia-law in Iran makes it kind of a very real, legal risk..
For nightlife, as you may know, there are no bars, no clubs, no anything official that serves alcohol or a dance floor, because Islamic State. However, the underground party scene is huge and the young people of Iran are very creative when it comes to stretching laws. Experiences anyone?

Also, Iran-general.

Greetings, fellow travelers, I will be in Las Vegas and San Francisco next month, and I am wondering if I should just get me a rental car that i can return at SFO, instead of returning it at LAS and entering a plane to San Francisco.

After a quick look at prices, it should not make that much of a difference, and even if it does, I dont really mind spending a few hundred more or less.

so the question is - is it worth it? I am an European, so driving through the US for a while seems kinda interesting, just for the sake of it, but I am not sure if that particular stretch of road is intersting enough for an approximated 9 hours total driving time. As a hydrologist, the central valley and the drought are of course very interesting to me, but I doubt I see much from the car window.

Passing through Yosemite might be fun, but seems like all the passes are closed already, so I would have to take a detour via lake tahoe or Reno, which would make this a 2 day trip probably.

I could also go through death valley, but that also seems to increase the time to 11 hours. Worth it? Or go along the coast for a bit, but that is also 11 hours.

tl;dr:
How to best get from Las Vegas to San Francisco.

You're right about not seeing much of the drought from a car window. And many people consider that stretch of highway as one of the most boring/worst in the entire country due to the road being straight with little in the way of scenery and lots of truck traffic.

The northern route across the Sierra Nevada through the Tahoe/Reno region is very pretty. If you combine that with the Death Valley idea you'd be able to see the eastern side of the Sierra, which is spectacular. There's nothing in Europe that compares to it.

And if you do take that route be sure to stop at the bakery in Bishop, California, and also at the South Tufa area of Mono Lake.

>How to best get from Las Vegas to San Francisco

The best way this time of year is by plane. You're right that the route through Yosemite is already closed; too bad, as that's the nicest way to go. The drive down the coast (on the Pacific Coast Highway) is quite nice, but isn't quick. The drive through the Central Valley of the state is quick, but not nice. Death Valley really is worthwhile; winter is a good time to go as it's not so incredibly hot then. I suppose it comes down to how much time you want to take -- if you're limited to 9 hours or so, go by plane. If you're willing to spend 3 days (and it's worth it), I'd take the PCH down to San Luis Obispo, head from there to Bakersfield, and then through Death Valley to Las Vegas.

>And many people consider that stretch of highway as one of the most boring/worst in the entire country due to the road being straight with little in the way of scenery and lots of truck traffic.
good to know!

As far as I see it, I can choose from three somewhat close options with the highway 5 being the one you dont reccomend.

what about 99 (east, going through Fresno) and 101 (west)?

the long way across death valley and the Sierra would probably mean that I have to make it two days, which will fuck with my hotel reservations, but maybe its worth it?
