Does anyone follow cuba dave here? Hes a carribean sex traveler and he is being detained indefinitely in costa rica for talking about prostitutes on the internet. Pretty fucked up that these third world countries can hold you indefinitely for such a bullshit charge.

Sorry if this has been done to death. Going to Europe next year, (I know a lot can change between now and then) to Rome, Florence, Berlin, London, Madrid and Barcelona.

Obviously Western Europe is on edge at the moment, but what is it like on the ground? Is there visible police/security presence?

Im not a total pussy (haha), Im still going to go but I think a visible police/security presence would ease my fears a bit. Seeing a totally keked city with no cops would be a bit strange.

Yes there is a visible police presence. Europe is SAFE, I'd even say it's safer than big American cities.

Rome - absolutely safe. Beautiful city, enjoy.
Florence, same.
Berlin - I live there, and you couldn't find a nicer place.
London - cool place I guess
Madrid & Barcelona - wonderful. Enjoy the amazing Spanish food.

You don't have to worry in any of these places.

>a totally keked city
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I strongly advise you to leave any /pol/ shit at the door. Thanks

I am going to Brazil for 2 weeks with another person and we leave Friday. We're going to Manaus, Rio, Sau Palo, and to see Igassu Falls. I have everything ready to go but just need some info from a local or someone who has been there:

-Is it safer/easier to take a Taxi or the train in Rio or Sau Palo vs just using Uber?

-I know Rio isnt the safest place, but will I be ok at least running around duing the day to typical tourist areas?

>>1051358
1) we are in a midst of a corporativist war between Uber and taxis, and the first ones were ultimately forbidden in Rio. I don't know about São Paulo
2) Stay strictly in tourist areas, don't be a gangsta and walk always with some R$ 150 in your pocket. If you are robbed, give it to the thief (you can face serious problems if you find a thief without money)
>>
>>1051363
Even staying in the tourist areas during the day what is the likely hood of being robbed?
>>
>>1051358
OP again. I also just remembered we're pretty much staying in Copacabana the entire few days we are there. I hear thats a more safe zone.

>Why is a culture derived from forced ass kissing and glib customer service so shit?
Because it is.

"How are you?" ≠ "Hello" know the difference
>>
>>1050297
Well if someone says they're doing good then yeah, end of greeting. If they say "not well" or anything like that then it works as a way to push past formalities and address any issue the person has or, if you're both friendly, dive straight into conversation.
>>
>>1050313
This exactly. Most of us do care. The ones that don't are usually really cynical about small talk.

What does the rest of the planet usually say after "hello" when they don't have any pressing matters at hand?

Best and worst airlines you've flown with?

Best for me was KLM. Excellent service, and free food and drink. Monarch were pretty good for a holiday airline too.

Worst is probably Thomson but I always end up flying with them whenever I go on holiday. They literally have no service apart from drinks. No meals. No inflight entertainment. People think Ryanair are the worst but I've been lucky enough to only fly with them to Dublin so I've not been on one of their planes long enough to experience just how bad they are.

Best was Etihad Airways. I'd rank KLM second for me. Better than the German airlines I've flown in. American/US Air ways have been the worst. Delta most meh. Not horrible, not great.
>>
>>1050146
Best: Turkish, KLM
Alright: Aeromexico
Worst: AA, United

yea my best was probably either KLM or Icelandair

KLM in flight entertainment is really good and theres so much free food and drink

Could we have a Singapore thread?

How is this country as a western foreigner?
Do you have to be a manager in finance to afford a one room cup ramen lifestyle or how bad is the living costs?
How is culture? How is night life?
27 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Culture is a Smörgåsbord of indian, muslin and chinese, with some thai sprinkled in there. Its kinda like Canada in the sense that you're in Singapore but nothing feels Singaporean culturaly speaking.

Nightlife is shit, beers are like 14 dollars each and clubs close at like 12-1, BUT all coffee bars and food places (all of which serve alcohol) dont close till like 4 am, so getting drunk and eating is one of the better activities to do there IMO, since the food is literally out of this fucking world.

Groceries are expensive, not sure about living arrangements tho.

Country is fucking SWEET, highly recommend it.
>>
>>1049945
Cheers on the proper smörgåsbord spelling and thanks for the reply.

14 dollar for a beer? Are we talking fancy pub or even dinner restaurant with friends kind of place?

Is there anything to do aside from beer, work and food?

I've been looking to get a new job and found a place there, but it's not finance so I expect salary to be low. What would you estimate is necessary for survival there?
>>

Holy fuck, back in a hostel for the first time in a year and having a beta moment where I ended up not talking to anyone. Not sure if I'm just exhausted, just wanted some peace and quiet, or what.

Anyone ever have this? Before I used to make tons of friends in hostels, but this one is a little different, not sure if it's me or the place.

Hostel general, I guess

There is nothing beta about not talking. In fact, if you don't feel like talking the beta thing would be to talk.

If you want to mingle I suggest that you stop contemplating how, navigate yourself into the nearest company and ask: hi, where are you from?

For a natural effect pick the first person you encounter or the one that is closest. Not a random individual across the room.

A smile helps too. Good luck

Do you think travel insurance is necessary? Why or why not? For those of you who purchase it on the regular, on what occasions have you had to make use of it? Who purchases it regularly and has yet to file a claim?

And lastly, based on your experience, would you say the majority of travelers you meet are insured?

Feel free to respond in a free format and without one-by-one greentext answers. Just curious.

I think travel-medical insurance is necessary. I buy it every time I travel and haven't had to use it yet. However if were to get sick or have an accident abroad I don't want to be paying $400,000 out of my own pocket to cover those expenses. We've all seen those astronomical medical bills from the US but many people don't know that in other countries the costs are actually similar to those it's just that medical care is free for their citizens. In Canada for example if an American was to end up in a hospital without insurance they'd be paying huge fees as well. There was a news story of a girl going to Mexico and in some accident sustained severe head trauma. Her bill was something like $80,000 to get her back home plus cover cost of hospital. Her friends were doing fundraising to collect money for her.

You can get cheap travel-medical, something like $400 a year that can even include a flight back to your home country in case you get stuck in a hospital abroad.

Other travel related insurances are up to you. I never get them. For things like lost luggage or flight cancellation, I wouldn't really bother unless you're flying with something of value that you have to check in instead of keeping with you in the airplane.
>>
Had two major claims in my life, both when I was younger and more risk adverse. Needless to say, I could spend $200 a year for the rest of my life on travel insurance and still not get close to the insurance bill for either one the bills.

One coma and one mountain rescue makes me think travel insurance is definitely worth it.
>>
Depends on your sort of travel I guess.

I never bought one since I always just traveled in cities or towns at worst and never in a situation where I considered really hurting myself (hiking, mountain climbing, extreme sports etc.)

My days are numbered, I feel wretched most times and I know its just a matter of time for me. I have only about 11,000 dollars left and at this point I just dont care anymore. I live in seattle now and I need a good 45 day vacation spot for my final trip ever. I really dont want to spend more than 2500 if I can help it and im super good at roughing it. Ive been in all lower 48 states, so those destinations are out. I hate cold (60), where would you suggest?

Easy. Pattaya, Thailand. Tons of older tourists there and cost of living is really cheap. Plus you can live out your days in nice warm weather banging Thai hookers.

With that amount of money, do the 1970's hippie trek to the himalayas through afghanistan. Beautiful trip, and you wil eventually die along the way, probably in a peaceful blaze of opium.

Planning on a road trip from Adelaide to Melbourne to watch a King Gizzard concert, drink with strangers, then back in the morning

My car is a 1973 Holden Kingswood Wagon (pic related). Am i dumb to take this old car on a 2000km round trip? its good for what i use it for being 20-30 km a day, and i like it because its a wagon, dual purpose as a shit carrier and to sleep in.

Also, what do i bring? what are the essentials? Ive got bedding, beer for when i get to Melbourne, money, good radio and a phone. Anything else?

I will be visiting Panama City with my wife next week. We only have 4 days, from Tuesday to Friday. Any suggestions on what should we visit and do inside the city?.

There really isn't much to do there. Go see the old town, Casco Viejo and if you're into that sort of thing the original settlement in Panama Viejo. Definitely check out the canal, it's pretty interesting actually even if you don't care much about ships.

Other than that, there really isn't anything else to see. The city is quite boring to be honest. You might find some good shit away from the areas with the skyscrapers. In fact, the most interesting area I stumbled across was close to Casco Viejo, in an area where the local black population lives. It looked poorer and dingier but also more interesting to just hang out and look at everyday life there. Panama seems to lack much of a middle class so don't be surprised when you see 3rd world shit in one of the wealthiest cities in Latin America.
