Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has any travel experience in Tibet as an American. Is Tibet a safe place? I know it is a "conflict zone" with minor rebellion towards the government of China. Is it possible to enter Tibet from Nepal as an American?
20 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Definitely possible. Know some people who did that. But be prepared to pay an amazingly high amout of money, that is if you wanna be safe.
>>
>>1056172
Why so high? And what are the safety concerns?
>>
>>1056146
OP you can visit Tibet if you join a guided tour provided by a government licensed travel agency.

This is the only way you can enter Tibet if you are not Chinese citizen. They check for identifications at airports and train stations for flights/trains going to Tibet.

If you are only gonna visit Lhasa, it's pretty safe. Tons of Chinese tourists go there every year. No unrest, riots or whatever. It's just a normal tourism city.

The rest of Tibet is unsafe, not because it's a war zone, but more because it's kinda lawless. In some remote parts of Tibet, there's no police, so the local people set up roadblocks on state highways and collect "passage fees". That's the worst it can get.

Anyone has done sailing?
I want to sail across the Atlantic from Britain to the Caribbean. Preferably alone.
How much sailing experience would one need to do this?

Planning a trip to Thailand with a few friends (Bangkok & Pattaya).. Thinking of going beginning of March. Ive read the cool season is a good time to go (Nov-Feb) and was curious if March might be a good time as well.

>>

March is OK. Tourist numbers (just barely) starting to dip, not more than a little rain (the 'mango rains,' which coincide with the advent of mango season, are showers which sometimes occur in March). But March is also the short, steep ramp up to the hottest time of year (April is almost always the hottest month), so if you're not used to warm, humid weather the climate may not be all that pleasant--expect consistent high 20s-mid 30s C, mid 80s-mid 90s F, and sticky. Bangkok weather is never that good thanks to the density and smog; Pattaya or other coastal areas should be tolerable with a bit of sea breeze.
>>
>>1055990
Depends what your after.

I've been to pattaya around the same time and it was a ghost town compared to "high season". If party atmosphere and girls (a lot of girls) is what you're after; I wouldn't recommend it.

If a nice relaxing time, without the hustle and bustle and crowding of falangs is what you're after; go for it - provided you can handle the temperature, which is stifling
>>
>>1055990
Low season is an excellent time to go to Pattaya. "Low" really just means opposed to "High", which gets insanely crowded.

Trust me, you won't regret going in March. Then again, you won't regret going at literally any time.

Sawse: I go to Thailand every six weeks.

Going to be in Amsterdam for the next four days. From what I can tell rijksmuseum, van gogh museum, and the Anne frank house are must sees. I also plan on doing the Heineken experience thing and at least walking down the red light district at night to see the atmosphere; anything else I should check out? Also looking for tips on Dutch food I should try.

You absolutely should get some krokettes from a FEBO store at 3am, you haven't done Amsterdam until you've done that.
>>
>>1055938
>Also looking for tips on Dutch food I should try.
- Stroopwafles. Preferably fresh, at a stand. If not available in the supermarket. It's the one everybody loves and descibes as the food of the Gods.
- Patatje Speciaal; fries with ketchup, mayo and onions
- Herring; Yes, Haring. Dutch style. Raw. By the tail. With onions and pickles.
- Bitterballs; get them in any decent snackbar or bar
- Drop; Dutch licorice. You'll hate it.
- Stamppot. The epitome of Dutch cuisine. Mashed potatoes with (over)boiled vegetables. Read up on all the varieties. I recommend Stamppot Boerenkool met worst (mashed potatoes with green cabbage and smoked sausage)
- Pepernoten. Peppernuts. It's the time of year. You will love these.
- Oliebollen. Oilballs. Also seasonal. It's basically a ball of fried donut dough. It's amazing. With powdered sugar and possibly with raisins.
- Frikandel Speciaal. A sausage made from every part of the animal they couldn't use elsewhere with mayo, curry and chopped onions.

Bellingham. Small enough to be cozy but it's not boring. Easy access to Mt Baker and the islands. Cheap bus ride to Seattle or Vancouver. Lots of good restaurants, breweries, bars, music, etc without being pretentious. Only difficult thing might be finding work, depending on what you do.
>>
>>1056278
great to hear positive things about bellingham, its one of the places ive been most strongly considering.

the others are:

(seattle if i could find anything affordable)
port angeles
olympia
bremerton
everett
port townsend
silverdale
anacortes

the ones lower on the list are not really as much what i want, but not completely ruled out.

I'm feeling pretty desperate right now, I recently broke up with my Chinese girlfriend here in the UK, the holiday is round the corner and I need to get away from here. Almost everyone in this town is flying back home.

How dumb an idea would it be to use some sort of dating app to connect with someone across the waters? I've never needed to use one of these apps before but I don't want to fly in blind to a country I don't know without making sure theres something waiting for me.

Has anyone used tinder with much success abroad? How about others like Wechat and Line?

Or should I just suck it up, bury myself in a job here and wait for it to all blow over?

Ok /trv/, I need help from any korean or people who lived/visited Korea.
I'm from Brazil and I'm going to Seoul soon, but I'm having a hard time with the WON currency and I really need to know if it's possible for me to exchange BRL for WON in Seoul.
Do banks or money stores accept BRL (the brazilian currency) there?

I want to avoid double conversions.
21 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I live in Seoul. I really doubt you could exchange Brazilian currency easily except at the airport.

Your best bet would just be drawing local currency (won) using a bank machine from your account back home. Best to do this at the airport as well since not all Korean ATMs take foreign cards. If you really need to bring cash for some reason, then exchange into USD and then change that into won.

I see, thank you very much for the info

I am going to be visiting Sevilla, España for a week this coming December.

We will be staying within the city, so everything will be walked to. Does /trv/ have any recommendations of places to visit, or tips so I don't get myself in trouble?

I have a decent knowledge of Spanish, while its American Spanish, will I have any troubles communicating with the Locals.

Sevilla is a great city, but you're missing out if you don't have a small trip to Granada. Other than that, go to the cathedral, the Reales Alcázares, the Hospital de los Venerables, the Plaza de España in the park, and the Metropol Parasol is pretty cool too.

You should be ok with communication, but know that the accent in AndalucĂa is very different to what you may be used to hearing. Lots of people speak English anyway.

Afternoon op. I'm from England and have been to bc once and plan to travel back next May however I'll be heading north to Alaska "anchorage and Fairbanks" I found the scenery around bc very plentiful however staying in the busy cities of bc are bloody expensive. Stay away from Vancouver not much to see there. Are you interested in snow sports ? If so bc is great place for said activities. If you are just looking for long walks/backpacking on tails them just hit up national parks they have so many in bc and have trails that you can follow via map and marked posts along the route
>>
>>1055724
It's a great natural setting, but there isn't much for cultural attractions.

People tend to like the mountains and ocean more than the trees.

If you got the money, fly to Edmonton and then take the train through the Rockies to Vancouver.

Other than the south western part around the coast, and the area between Kelowna and Kamloops, there's hardly anything. Some of those places on the map have 1000 people.

Thoughts and experiences with AirBnB? I'm going to be taking a road trip in a little bit and it seemed like a great way to meet locals and room for cheap. Pro/con: stories; critique; all accepted.

Vastly superior to a hotel but the good ones are not cheap.
Look for a host that has time to hang out.
Find one that seems to have similar interests.
The host is far more important than the actual room.
Ladies if a host seems to be single and male with no mention of a GF, that means you probably can hook up if the chemistry is good.
Guys do not really hook up with female hosts. Sorry , thats not how it works.
>>
Cons: asshole neighbors force your host to threaten you to kick you out

Hongdae in Seoul, we were playing music at a moderate volume before going out and immediately our host texted us we should keep the noise down.
A few days later an apartment two stories up does a house party with blaring music, laughter and screams for hours.

We (my gf and I, both early 30s) are staying at the Aria. Should I even bother trying to tip the check in clerk in an effort to get a complimentary upgrade? I've read that the check in line at Aria is long and slow, and then they have an online checkin system that moves much faster. We land at 12:05, and the fighter weigh ins are at 3pm, so we're going to be in a bit of a rush.

I've read that California medical marijuana users can use their recommendation in Vegas, but I've yet to read solid instructions on how to go about it. Can someone please explain the process for a california mmj patient to secure meds in Vegas?

I'm trying to anticipate how crowded the hotel will be the weekend we're there. We chose the Aria because of its coed spa facilities, but in reading some reviews, I've found that the spa facilities (especially the outdoor pool) can get crowded. We were hoping to hit up the spa on Sunday. Does Vegas draw visitors in December, or does it not matter because people show up and pack the hotels for any big UFC event?

On Saturday night, after the fights, we'd like to go out and do a bit of dancing. But I've heard the music that gets played in the big clubs on the strip and it's not what I'm into. For instance, UFC fighter Page Van Zant is hosting a party at Tao, and this is the DJ's soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/jerzymuzik Modern rap + EDM shit is not what we're into at all. Are there any places that play pop music like Lady Gaga and Ellie Goulding?

>>
It might be different for you, but I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in December 2012 and that weekend after I graduated me and a buddy drove out to Vegas for a roadtrip. Pretty much right at the same time you'll be there.

I was shocked at how empty Vegas was in December.

I know they throw big Christmas and New Years parties but early to mid December the city was almost a ghost town.

Of course you're going for a specific event so things might be different.

Also, we were both expecting to see girls our age a fair bit, but for the most part the only people who visit Vegas at that time is old people and East Asian tourists.

You could try slipping your check in clerk some money to get a better room since the hotels will likely have a lot of empty rooms and an upgrade will be easy but usually the "complimentary" upgrades they use for this sort of thing are not spectacular. You likely won't be bumped up to a suite for example, you might get a room with a bit more floor space or a better view. It's also easier if you want to request something specific like a room with easy access to the casino floor or something.

I don't know anything about the medical marijuana question but as far as clubs go, Vegas has thousands of them. Just do a bit of searching and you'll likely find something that plays the music you want. In addition, you might be surprised just how much advertising you get exposed to in Vegas, advertising for Vegas clubs, restaurants, etc. is everywhere, and usually lists music lineups, so you'll likely see something you'd be interested in that way.

How long are you going to be in the area for? Going anywhere else in Indonesia?

I don't have too much advice that I can give you for Bali unfortunately. I went there with my parents for a few days, and we were definitely on the main tourist path. Some of the big draws are the temples like the one you posted, and it really shouldn't be hard to get that organized.

If you've got 4-5 days to spare and you're the more outdoorsy type, I'd really recommend hiking Mt. Rinjani. It's right next door on the island of Lombok, and it's an amazing trip.

I'm 20, currently taking TEFL courses and I have another 4 months to go, but I have already been receiving emails for job opportunities mostly based in East and South Asia.

Have you ever met a woman teaching English abroad? Are they treated differently? Less/more likely to be hired?

I ask because I'm the only female in my class, lol. I don't wanna sound like a feminist but I also don't want to be laughed out of a classroom in Japan, Egypt, etc.

Otherwise, I'm pretty pumped.

Many women teach ESL abroad. For younger kids/kindergarten, etc. you will be actually favored over men. I worked for AEON (a big language school company in Japan) for a year. The other foreign teacher at my school was a woman. Most Japanese English teachers in Japan are women. You are creating things to worry about.

You are only 20. Do you have a bachelor's degree? If not, that will be the biggest impediment to you being hired rather than being a woman.
>>
>>1055418
I will also say be careful with the job offers you have coming in. You may or may not know, but ESL can be a very scummy industry. People are often exploited and taken advantage of. This is not so much the case in Japan, but it happens often in Korea, China and elsewhere. If you don't mind where you are placed, I'd highly recommend trying to get a public elementary school job in Korea (The public school jobs are great--if you keep an open mind and just smile and play the dumb, interested foreigner card always--everything should go smoothly). The public school foreign teacher program was scaled back massively a couple years ago, but I think it still exists in some capacity. There are only elementary school jobs available. Bluntly speaking-- single white women are the most in demand for elementary school jobs. They will be more competitive than they used to be, because of the cutbacks in positions, but if you can get a job they are quite good. You get a free apartment, a decent paycheck. Basically very comfortable and you can save lots of money. Especially if you are not a go out and party kind of person. I was in Korea in a public junior high before Japan, and it was great.
