Hey guys, I got some questions about moving to the States, mainly about which cities would be best to move to. Looking to avoid the more common places to go like new york and LA.

I am in the language teaching industry and looking to get into a managers position, so the city has to be large enough or diverse enough to have quite a lot of language schools.

But at the same time I want to be in a short drive of good skiing mountains, less that an hour and a half would be ideal.

So any advice on that would be great, but i have some questions about a few cities as well

>1. Is Albuquerque a nice place to live? how close are the mountains?

>2. What is Salt lake city like? How weird is it living with all the mormons?

>3, Is Milwaukee as depressing to live in as i've been led to believe? Are there many language schools this far north?

>4. And generally what are your opinions on Denver, Boston and Seattle?

I have a masters and have seen plenty of job offers for managerial positions for recent graduates.
Also I'm an american citizen, I just wasn't born there and have never lived there.
So it isn't going to be that difficult, I already live outside of the country I grew up in.

Is there a single fucking city/country where Taxi drivers don't try to rip you off? I live in the South East US so I have never dealt with them in the states but every city in Europe or Asia I have been to they try to overcharge you in anyway possible.

Protip: Don't ever just flag a taxi and get in. You look stupid that way, and will be treated like all the other stupid idiots that driver once drove. Use other transport to/from trains and airports, there should be kiosks where you pay first, and then a queue of taxi drivers receive a voucher from you and can't size you up or choose you as the passenger.
Have your hotel send a car for you, a limo is never that much more money when affiliated with your hotel, and the hotel trusts them/vetted them and their reputation rides on them. Have a local call for one when you need one somewhere, from a restaurant or just some hotel you walked past and asked a concierge a favor. Now if we're talking about Europe, you probably should navigate the metro/bus system if you are worried about your money.

Don't wave them down on the street, but if you do, you ask the price before getting in like you want a vague estimate and even say something like "hrm, the metro is only $5" like you're weighing if you want to get in, and you get a feel for the response and the person before getting into the car. Often, you get a return response like "okay, it'll be $10, and blahblahblah about how you should ride with them" and once the firm negotiation is over, you get in. You now look like someone who gives a damn about the price. And, go ahead and ask people how much it should cost to/from, or miles, and understand what would be fair before doing it. Ask a damn policeman at the door of the train station, how much me thinks it should be to city center, thank him, and use that as a baseline of honesty with the taxi driver.

>I live in the South East US so I have never dealt with them in the states
It's a regulated industry in the US. Union-negotiated fares are marked on stickers on windows, drivers are reported by 800 number, and you can reverse a credit card charge. On top of that, there will be competitively stated rates for all services to/from airports, and to/from ports, such as in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, New York, and transits such as that. It's posted and companies can't veer from that prices. Why are they higher? Or why are they capped? Because drivers must enter into queues not snatch passengers from each other, and there could be heavier rates during rush hour delays, and this means idling time. Local municipalities made it easy for tourists by making a set rate.

Going to Boracay, Cebu and Bohol.

Can anyone help me making a travel-plan for Southern France? Or just point out locations where to go / check out?
Or places you've been to and really enjoyed?

The idea is to see/travel through areas that are..

> full of beautiful nature
> smaller villages / cities
> mountains (perhaps even to hike around)

It would roughly 3 weeks, at most 4.

French southerner reporting in.
I'll assume you have a car or will use our efficent, when not on strike railway, so i'll pick locations from all over the south.

Nature/mountain/hike

-High mountains: The Pyrenees are pretty amazing but I know the Alps better. The nationals parks of the Écrins and of the Vanoise (pic related) are beautiful. The Aiguille du Midi is pretty cool, with its James Bond villain like base at the top.
-Lower mountains: The pre-Alps, a.k.a the Vercors mostly is rocky cliffs and tortured landscapes with waves of rock cutting the land. Pretty cool to hike and without the need of high altitude preparation. Otherwise there's the Massif Central, made of a lot of plateaux, sleeping volcanoes, and global comfyness.
-Sea shore: The Atlantic coast is famous for its surf spot, and in Arcachon you can also find the highest sand dune in Europe and the Landes forest, largest "man made" forest in western Europe (look at a satellite map of France, it's this green triangle in the south west). The Mediterranean coast is warmer waters but very touristic, I honestly it isn't worth spending time on the beach of the Med if you are used to the sea, there are far better, more unique things to see in those regions. Unless you go as far as Corsica, the beaches are stunning.
-Canyons: We have a truck load of them actually. Canyon of Verdon, Tarn, Ardèche, Hérault, Bourne...My favorite being the first 3 I wrote. I'll dump pics of those places when I'm done. Definitely worth going there tho
-Caves: A lot of them too, especially in south western France (Dordogne, Lot). Caves of Padirac, of Proumeyssac.
-Also in Provence, the Calanques national park is beautiful, pics will follow.
Otherwise there are other landscapes like the wetlands and marshes in Camargue, foggy hills in the Corbières, plains in the Causses plateaux...so if you have something precise in mind, ask.

Hey anons. I have never been out of the United States and this summer I am going to the land down under. Specifically, Melbourne, Victoria.

Any advice on how to do this with a budget in mind?

Any tips on how to travel more cheaply?

Been looking into hostels.. but I have a bit of social anxiety.

Thanks/trv/.

Honestly the only bad thing about Australia is Australians. Incredible nature, breathtaking scenery, incredible beaches and big beautiful clear skies. What will amaze and astound you, they consider pests. If you like wildlife prepare to have your mind blown.

The people however are unfathomably stupid, violently aggressive, boneheadedly arrogant, and thick as all get out. You'll have an incredibly difficult time to find anyone who can speak or reason beyond a third grade level. Add some ridiculous slang to the mix ("cunt" can be positive or negative for instance) and ugly koi fish tattoos everywhere, and you have the general picture of aussies. Imagine American dudebros in lifted trucks x1000.

However, you'll never meet them because you'll be stuck on the tourist tract. They call it "backpackers" but you're just tourists. Maybe a little younger. You'll shuffle around to various bars and hostels, meeting obnoxious Brits and humorless aspergian Germans all convinced they're doing something unique and grand. You'll get bilked into stupid "pub crawls" and "bus tours" where you'll be wrung dry and shuttled around with the other Germans and brits. When you go broke, you'll call your mom for help and get another grand to piss away on dumb drinking activities. Some people get jobs fruit picking where they and other Germans and brits will work for half the wage that an Australian would get, others get suckered into "wwoofing" where you literally don't get paid.

You'll get laid two or three times and come back broke, a few kilo lighter, indebted and you can tell all the bumpkins in flyover America what an exotic, mind blowing, completely original and unique time you had down there, and they'll believe it...

Until they go.

Melbourne guy here. You basically summed up what I hate about my own country, which amuses me because I can list the same sort of obnoxious shit about other countries.
Melbourne is a lot better than any of the other major cities for this reason, a lot less bogans if you stay away from the shitty suburbs.

Hi,

I'm looking at maybe becoming a language assistant in Spain with the British Council at some point in the next few years, one of those jobs where you get like 800 euros or so for 12 hours a week work.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it fairly easy to get onto? I'm self taught and don't have any Spanish qualifications, will this hold me back? I'm okay at the language, will be a year or two before I apply anyway so I have time to improve.

It looks like a lot of fun and I've got some money saved up so if anyone has done it before and could tell me what it's like in Spain or anywhere else, that'd be great.

Have a week off in October lads and I wouldn't mind getting away for a bit. Is there any point in even trying to visit more than one or two cities? Any highly concentrated areas in Europe where there is plenty to see in such a short time? I'm thinking maybe Netherlands or Germany

If you stay in The Netherlands or Belgium, you can easily go to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Brugge, Ghent, Antwerp or Brussels. They're all well-connected by public transport and the distances are quite short. So take your pick. You could even do a city a day, but then you'd definitely miss a lot.

An alternative would be seeing Vienna and Bratislava or maybe Vienna and Budapest.

Ljubljana and Zagreb is also an option.

Munich and Salzberg can be done as well.

That's all with relatively short distances.
>>
>>1073923
Sounds good. I'm not really tempted by Belgium 2bh, leaning more towards Central Europe. What's the party scene like in Vienna? I like the sound of Bratislava and Budapest but I don't know much about Vienna. I do know it's a beautiful city though so it will certainly be on the shortlist. Would Prague-Vienna-Bratislava sound like a viable trip? Or Vienna-Bratislava-Budapest? I also like the sound of Krakow.
>>
>>1073939
I wouldn't discard Belgium. Brugge, Ghent, Brussels and Antwerp are very nice and Belgium quite simply has the best beer in the world.

I've only been to Vienna by day, so I don't know the party scene. I was staying in Bratislava and from there Vienna is just an hou by train. So we took a day trip. Bratislava does have a nice party scene, and Budapest an even better one. Cheap as well.

I spent some time in Krakow last summer. Great place!

Alright /trv/ lads. Planning going on a lads vacation to Burgas in may 2016. Could anyone here please describe how the weather, nightlife etc is there usually around that time ?! Anymore things we need to consider before booking the tickets. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Bulgarian here, not much experience with our sea side cuz' I consider it grossly overpriced and tourist-ridden. This is how I'd put things.
>Partying and beaches at: Burgas, Slanchev Bryag (Sunny Beach) and Pomorie.
These are meme party locations though, shit music (chalga), easy girls and what have you. You can clearly bonk off to the city to find a club with alternative music, but the beachfront is shit.
>Laid back at Sveti Vlas
>Sight-seeing in Nesebar and Sozopol
Good news is that you can day trips to each and any of these and still sleep in Burgas if you want. July and August are optimal as far as weather goes. Go as late as possible in May.

Recently CS has made many changes that I think are for the worse. For starters is the recent update to the reference system, which took away the old system of Positive, Neutral and Negative. Under the old system References were clear, straightforward, organized into what I consider an almost universally understandable language, i.e. Green means go, good, positive and everything is alright, Grey means neutral, Red means STOP, Attention, warning, caution and negative. I think we can all agree that pretty much anyone could understand that. So why remove that? Not only was it intuitive, easy to understand, straightforward, user friendly and visually appealing, but it was helpful and Perfect for new members to understand! I’m sure you’ve heard the tried, true and tested age old saying of “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!”, so I ask why again? Having color coded positive, neutral and negative references was straight and to the point and worked.
Anyone remember the good old days when CS had forums and local travel guides written by CS directly on the website??
Let's discuss current problems and ways to improve it and what needs to be changed in order to improve the website. I have already written to CS to complain about he changes, but nothing will change if only one person does it, so I urge others to write to CS support and let's try to get things changed for the better. Anyway I will try to forward what we talk about here to them, so with that being said guys, let's discuss and try to save our community!

I'm not sure /trv/ is a great place to try and enlist a more-or-less personal army for a great crusade to save couch surfing. If for no other reason, there are so few users here.

But to discuss things, what have they replaced the old color code with? Something that will be fine once you get used to it?

Also, what's your stake in this? You seem pretty intense about something that seems a minor matter.

>save our community

Our community is /trv/ -- whether or not it needs saving would be a topic for a different thread but in any case would have nothing to do with Couch Surfer website questions.
>>
>>1073941
Well if you use CS it's a pretty big deal. The changes they made basically made it, so no one can leave negative feedback anymore, so basically now the only way you can tell if someone had a bad experience is to read every single reference they have.

Gf and I won a cruise. Cruise goes from barcelona, cartegena, gibraltr, genoa, florence, rome. Get 1 day in each. We have to pay for "excursions", we are not sure what to do in each city or if we should just go it alone and not be part of a tour group. We don't have any experience with cruises. Its this july, the height of EU tourist season I assume... Are the excursions worth it? Any other cruise tips?

>>
I've found it possible to book "excursions" based on what I want to see and do, rather than on what the ship thinks many people will want to see and do, online a few weeks ut, rather than go through the ship's purser, notably cheaper. Sometimes I have discovered it is the same tour, they pick up the group on the ship that paid too much, then pick me up a block or two away.

And, of course, doing your research and just doing your own thing in port is fine.

The sole real advantage of booking through the ship is that they guarantee to get you back aboard before the ship sails. Getting left in port is a nuisance, you'll have t catch up with the ship at the next port, at your own expense.

I've never had that happen -- just leave yourself plenty of time to get back aboard, but if I had to name an advantage to booking excursions with the ship, that would be it.

If you DO book through the purser's office, get in line and book early... popular excursions sell out early.
