Hey /trv/ So I got a scholarship to study in China at Kaifeng in the Henan province. I know its not as cool as Shanghai, but oh well. I was just wondering what are some things I should bring with me, things to do, places to see, any advice. those kind of things. I did give myself some time to travel around and I am planning a week trip to Shanghai.

I was thinking of driving up North this summer just to see the Northern Lights and maybe do a bit of fishing and outdoorsy photography stuff. Anyone got any stories or experiences from up there?

I don't think summer is a very good time for the Lights - the sun is up 24 hours if you are far enough north. But you should go, it's amazing.

I honestly don't get fags like you who don't even take the time to think of something funny or witty, just shit from your fingers onto the keyboard and find it hysterical. Like I go out everyday and work and exercise in part because being on your computer all day will fry your brain. Where did it go wrong for you and what can I do to help?

Hi /trv/, my mom's going to be going back to visit Spain, and I'd like to get a SIM card for a Spanish mobile provider before she leaves.

She currently doesn't even have a cellphone, and barely knows how to use technology. I know she could just buy one in Spain very easily, but I don't want to have her try and buy one and install it by herself. So I'd like to buy a SIM card online, get her a phone and have her all set before she leaves the country.

While on the subject, which carrier would be best in Spain anyway?

I apologize if this is more /g/ than /trv/, but I figured travelers deal with this more frequently than gentoomen.

Bumping for interest. I would like to ask the same but in reverse. If I go to the states, what do I need to do to keep cellphone/internet acces? And is this different for every state?

Carrefour Móvil:

http://www.carrefour.es/telecom/internet-movil/index.html

SIM: 10€ in any Carrefour supermarket (including Carrefour Express), includes 5€ of credit. You want the data SIM, not the voice SIM. They sell them in the checkout line.

DATA TARIFFS:
1€/day unlimited data, billed per-day. If you only connect during one day (0h-2359h) you only pay 1€. Thus that SIM will keep you going for five days without a recharge. You get full HSPA data up to 100MB/day, then it drops to 128Mb/s.

1GB Pack - 19€, good for a 30-day period, unlimited data. Once you pass 1GB, speed is reduced to 128Mb/s. You can either re-up for another 1GB or switch to the 1€/day after that.

APN Settings:
apn: CARREFOURINTERNET

--------------------

Vodafone:

http://vodafone.es

SIM: 18€ in any Vodafone shop, includes 18€ of credit. There is a Vodafone shop every couple of blocks in the cities, and every small town has at least one.

DATA TARIFFS:
0,50€/day unlimited data - no P2P, no VOIP, consistent high volume gets you booted to their GPRS network at lower speed

3€/week unlimited data - same as above

IPAD SIM:
15€ includes 15€ of credit. VOIP works.

IPAD TARIFFS:
15€/month - 200MB, then speed drops to GPRS
32€/month - 2GB, then speed drops to GPRS

All Vodafone SIMs can be recharged in ATMs that have the "4b" logo.

--------------------
Another option is Happy Móvil:

http://www.happymovil.es

SIM: 10€, available in any Phone House shop, also most other independent mobile shops.

DATA TARIFF:
0,09€/MB - EDGE speeds, billed in MB increments.

All Happy Móvil SIMs can be recharged in "la Caixa" ATMs. This may be an interesting option because they have extremely cheap international calls - around 0,06€/minute to much of the world - and calls between Happy Móvil numbers are always free.

Hello all traveling brothers and sisters.
On this board on several occasions we've played the game where one person posts a picture, and the rest of us have to guess where it was taken.

Today, I come to you with a picture to which I cannot give any clues other than these: It is most definitely in a major developing country. China, Brazil or the likes. It was used as a cover for the French publication "L’état du monde" discussing up-and-coming countries.

My own verdict: The foreground houses do not look very Chinese, but may well be. Shanghai, maybe Guangzhou?

Can we make this a New Zealand general?

I'm also travelling to NZ and have a pretty rough itinerary:

- Home/Aukland
- Waiheke
- Waitomo (Waitomo Adventures - 7hour epic? worth it? and suggestions?)
- Rotorua (drive by)
- Tongariro Alpine crossing (12-hour walk)
- Wellington (stop over)
- Kaikoura (whales for a day)
- Marlborough (any good vineyards? nice places to stay that don't break the bank?)
- Abel Tasman (3 days trekking)
- Nelson/Home

Please any NZ top tips etc would be really welcome. We're thinking of hiring a camper van, good idea?

It's a long way from home and finding it hard to plan.

Hey /trv/

I saw the British guy that commuted from Sheffield to Essex via Berlin because it was cheaper than a direct train.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-35424393

It kind of inspired me into trying out one-day excursions.

I guess this applies mostly to Eurofags because of the distance involved for anyone outside.

Ryanair has £9.99 flights to lots of Euro countries. Was wondering if anyone else has tried something similar?

Basically flying out in the morning to somewhere, and flying back at night, all within a single day seeing as much as possible and not staying in a hotel.

From London the options are pretty extensive, and I am thinking of doing it to Oslo, Copenhagen or Berlin because they aren't at the top of my list of places I want to see but still want to see them anyway.

Any experiences?

My friend had an agreement with his employer in the UK to work 3 days onsite and 2 days remote. He lived in Poland and then France, Germany, Italy for 4 out of 7 days a week.
It was amazing, I visited him at Poland - awesome place and he paid like 10-20 pound for the tickets.
>>
>>1076277
I do 2 day trips all the time. Doing it in one day is usually more stress than fun unless you can get the first flight out departing not later than 7:00 and return with a flight that won't depart before 21:30.

Hostels or a Ibis room for a night are usually around 30€ so it won't add much to the bill and you can enjoy a nice dinner in the evening and get a taste of the nightlife.

OP here.

Ended up buying flights from London to Copenhagen.

£9.99 there
£7.02 back

Opted for an over nighter - hotel was £42, but sharing cost with GF.

So total cost £38.01 each.

For comparison I just bought a pizza for £12.

so has anyone had any experience with WHV in Australia; and was it difficult to find employment

I'm about to leave Australia, one of the reasons being how difficult it is to get employment here. There are many other reasons. This country is totally shit and it's government would have been laughed at in the 40s, don't come here. You will regret it.

I'm in Australia with my WHV. It's not the eldorado,at some place find a work must very very hard (all the east coast).

I'm in Perth now I just found a work in a cattle station(free food/accomodation and 100$ per day) for at least 3mounth (or more if I want to).
My advice is fligth to Western Australia or Northern Territory (Darwin).

After it's depend on your english (where you from anon ?).

Last thing in July every backpackers will be taxe 32%for each dollar. Before if you worked 6mounth you were a resident not anymore so it'll be harder to save money but it's doable.

I'm planning on moving from Washington state to Phoenix Arizona. How do I rent an apartment before I get there? Any advice on long distance moving?

>>
I'm in the same boat OP.

Moving from Chicago to Fort Collins in June and me and the gf aren't renting a moving truck. I drive a small car so we are really downsizing and throwing everything away beforehand, which is okay since all we own is fucking trash. We're planning on renting a small Uhaul trailer for some of the larger things that don't fit into the back of a small hatchback.

As for renting an apartment before hand, you have to call and ask around if they'll accept applications from someone so far away. Depending on the location apartments might not stay on the market for long at all. I worked in real estate before here in Chicago and all the nice apartments we had, ranging from about $1200 to $3500 a month never stayed available for more than a week before they were rented out. Best bet is trying to find roommates and creating a record of living in the area before finding your own place.

Before moving, throw away EVERYTHING you haven't used in a while or plan to never use before.

So I have up to 12 days and $6000 to spend in a foreign country. I am 18/m from US and will be spending a month in Kazakhstan. After that I can fly anywhere I want and really enjoy myself (though distance should be noted considering I have limited time).
So I'm not interested in prostitutes (I feel inclined to note this considering so many on this board are) though I'm up for anything else. All I want to do is have a ton of fun and money really isn't a problem.
I'm up for outdoors activities or eating or partying (though I don't look rich and I'm like a 5~6 so I don't no if I can get into a club), etc.

if you really want to go somewhere where something is happening, go to India. There is always something you can take part of:)
>>
More info dude. Where have you been before? What are your interests? I mean... Nature? Mountains? Sea? Parties? Architecture? Outdoor activities?
>>
Oh, hello there.

Well I was travelling through India for 4 months. I understand you about that: me and my bro wasn't weren't interested in hookers as well. We mostly wanted to experience culture and learn about it.

In touristic cities described in guidebooks you will always find some guesthouses full of backpackers. They are mostly opened people willing to talk, to exchange views, listen to stories from former travels. I loved that!
Locals love white people. In the beginning it was nice (everybody wants to have photo with you) but later I realized it was kind of racism cause they treated me like a celebrity only because of my skin color and later you can expect to have photo of yourself in their facebook, cause they met a white one. We met two guys from South we spend some time together, went to see few places. We visited them at their family house. Met them, had dinner. Really cool.
Indian calendar has lots of holidays and celebrations. You can easily find yourself in the middle of local temple holiday. Every holiday is like FULL POWER. Full of colors, full of fireworks (they love it)

You can travel to Goa and have full party there. Goa, trance, speed trance and dnb easy to find. Backpackers there as well

Mountains in the North - I think you know which one. Hard to find routs leading to peaks but still can hike there. There are cities just waiting for tourists in the season. And Himalayas are beautiful. They are.

Things that I didn't like in India was full of waste in the streets. And architecture is disgusting as well.

For me it was a life changing experience. I am 26 and it made me... more adult. You probably now what I mean. you travel, you make decisions, you have to be aware where are you and is the place safe, blablabla...
I recommend you India very much!

Do you visit countries with failing economies to help stretch your money?

Do you typically examine the cost of living prior to traveling? If so, what are your experiences, websites of choice regarding this?

I've been going to Canada more lately because of that.
>>
>>1076129
Yeah I always thought that Canada seems a little boring and not worth it considering the cost but now it's looking a lot more attractive. If the rates get any better I'll just say fuck off to Israel and go skiing in Alberta.

For all the Mexicans who complain about the cost of coming to the US, have you ever considered Russia?

Yes, but never as my main goal. There must be something interesting to that country for me to want to visit it. The money thing is just a big help.

hey everyone!

I (m,23) want to travel to sweden with a group of boyscouts. ages will be like 14-whatever. I once have been to tiveden for 2 weeks and enjoyed the countryside very much. As we are going to hike, I'd like to ask you some questions:

what are desireble places to visit? we start in germany, will travel then to sweden either by train or train+ferry. we are looking for beautiful landscapes, loads of forest and some civilisation to buy food ;)

is camping in regular forests legal / will it get us into problems? we most likely will have campfires and tents.

anything we MUST do + things we should definitly avoid?

how much have you spent for a living?

how much is an average roll of 35mm film in sweden? :D

we are experienced in traveling, hiking.
kind regards!
in exchange, feel free to ask me anything

pic related, i took it in tiveden.

>>
for camping/fire google allemansrätten (doesnt apply to national parks though).

campfires are not generally forbidden, it depends on the forest-fire-danger.

camping for groups on private land requires permition of the owner, if you are alone you can camp everywhere as long as its not in sight of a house.

As for destinations there are just so many to choose from, depends on whether you want to hike completely through the wilderness or on an established trail http://www.visitsweden.com/sweden/Things-to-do/Adventure--Sports/Hiking/

I can only recommend doing a canoe-tour, there are organizations that offer guided tours or just give you the equipment for a couple of days. I once did it and they actually picked us up in Germany so that would be an easy option for you.

Otherwise Ive only been to the Fulufjället National Park right at the border to Norway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B12R8NSC1lU .
I had a great time and really enjoyed it there but cant really compare to other locations.

Well trains aren't cheap in Germany. Flights are cheap if you choose the right airline and book at the right time.
Taking the expensive fast trains of course is expensive.
A cheaper way of traveling is using buses.
I just checked and I can get from Hamburg to Paris for example (3x the distance) for 80 Euro for 2 people (by plane)
>>
>>1076022
You definitely did something wrong, stupid burgerclap. I've done that exact route several times when my then-gf was doing an internship in Brussels (hurr durr cuckjokes go here). It always took 3.5 hours, and though I don't recall exact prices now several years later, I know never paid more than 80-90€ or so one way, and that's for peak hours. I can clearly recall paying in the 40-60€ range a few times.

You booked at the last minute, and chose a shitty connection.
>>
>>1076032
I literally go to bahn.de, query tickets a month out, and go for the cheapest thing they have, which is usually 1.5x longer than the more expensive routes. Let me know if there's a better way to do it.

I did the same to go from Wiesbaden to Strasbourg (210 km) and back. It cost me 50 euros, and would have cost me 30 more but I got a "discount" by opting to depart at something like 5 in the goddamn morning.
