what's the best way to thoroughly learn the streets and landmarks of a city?

i'm moving to melbourne and even though it's easy mode i'm having trouble memorizing everything.

i want to be able to give reliable directions to tourists

The best way for me is to use the streets. I can get a picture of the map in my head. But once I have been there that is when it really sticks. It doesnt matter how you get there, walking, on a bike, driving a car.
>>
Use the streets, as anon said, that, landmarks and big-ass signs for hotels, bars, etc. How much are you planning to help them depends on them too. There are people in this world that can't find their arse with both hands.
>>
>>1089378
Once there....review a map after you just "did something new" and you'll cement in the visual image of the layout and street names that cross intersections, with the street view images of being on the ground. It'll help with the awareness of going north, or whatever direction and make those memories longer term.

Which cards are best for travel? Should I become a loyalist and get a specific airline card? Which airlines offer the best cards and rewards? Is it better to just have a generic card that earns small amount of miles?

I'm American btw and do most domestic travel.
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Sorry op I don't know. I hope you find the answer soon though :)
>>
>>1089321
Why would you need a specific card for domestic travel? Just use whatever card you use for your day to day spending. If your trying to accrue points wouldnt you want to use the card for everything?
>>
Barclays got me a free round trip to Sweden. Spend 3k in 3 months and you get x amount of points towards any form of travel. No black out dates, any airline, boat, etc, because you spend the points with Barclays. Meaning you save up $125 worth of points? Simple deduct that from the cost of a travel expense.

Posted this on /out/ but they told me to go here.

I need to make an emergency road trip from Atlanta to New Jersey on Saturday. Drive is about 13 hours straight without stopping, so with breaks and whatnot, I'm going to say it'll be closer to 15 hours.

I have frozen and cold food that I bought a few days ago before I knew I'd have to leave. About $80-100 worth of cold food in the fridge so I want to bring it with me. Could a foam cooler like this packed with ice keep my food safe for that long?
9 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Yeah it'll be fine, you might need to change the Ice at some point and it'll probably leak so keep a towel under it.
>>
>>1089296
you'll be fine mate. The frozen stuff might thaw out a little bit but should still be able to re freeze.

As a cu/ck/ I can safely say there is no risk of cross contamination or food borne illnesses from your refrigeration method, even if it was frozen chicken or pork. As long as the storage stays below 5 c which it will, your food's fine.

The trip doesn't sound like a fun vacation, so I'm sorry to hear about it. Chin up, anon.

Howdy all
I invite you also to the English or Polish version of this www.mtkosciuszko.org.au website. You will find there a lot of information about the conquest of Mt Kosciuszko the highest peak of Australia, and about Paul Edmund Strzelecki the explorer who gave the mountain its name.
Thanks

Some fun facts for you lad, Mt Kosciuszko isn't the highest peak of Australia, thats Mt. Mawson. And even then, Mt Kosciuszko wasn't always the highest mountain on mainland australia. There was a mixup with the naming of the mountains based off the original mapping with it and Mt Townsend. Mt Kosciuszko was proclaimed to be the highest mountain of australia so they just switched the 2 names

Hi /trv/, first time here.

In a few weeks, the situation may arise when I have to choose between being sent to Madrid for 6/12 months
on a job, or to Dubai for the same time.

I'm having a hard time deciding which to go for.

A bit of background:

>22
>Italian
>Software developer

As an Italian, Madrid would possibly be the obvious choice since spanish has a very high cross-intelligibility
with italian.

On the other hand, Madrid is behind the corner.
I could probably pick up a low cost flight to Madrid for for 50€ or less, while there is a strong possibility
I would never visit Dubai in my life if I don't pick up this opportunity right now.

Has anyone here ever worked in Dubai?
Care to share your experience?

If you value adventure, go to Dubai. You will be bored though, there is little to do besides shop and look at expensive things. On the other hand you will have cheap flights to all of Asia at your disposal for weekend getaways.

Of course Spain will be much more fun but it may not be as exhilarating to go somewhere that is a day's drive away vs another continent. Idk your decision. Spain will be more fun but Dubai will be more "different" and is one of the only safe ways to travel to Arabia, granted

>On the other hand you will have cheap flights to all of Asia at your disposal for weekend getaways.

I didn't even think about that. Great tip.

Dubai is full of money obsessed expat cunts do if that sounds like you then go for it.

Although it's the most liberal UAE country it's still UAE so need to be careful about certain things.

The buildings are pretty amazing though.

Rapid is awesome! I'm there every summer to visit my mom. I dont remember any of the name's of bars in particular but a night on the town is great. Downtown rapid is kinda small but can pack a punch with all the collages around it. Just bar hop on the weekend and take one of the painting classes they have there and have a great time!

Thanks for reply! Do you have any idea how it is for foreigners to go out? Do people wonna talk and stuff? Or is it more Like a "closed party"

Here's the deal: I'm a 19 year old college kid who wants to have a damn fun spring break. My uncle owns a house down in Acapulco and generally wants me to come down and visit family. Considering most of my family is from Guerrero, it's meaningful to visit down there. But the dilemma is I keep up with the news and keep hearing pretty ugly stuff about the area, even for tourists. Is it still sprawling with cartels to where I shouldn't go at all? Also, I might have friends interested in coming with me, would it be too dangerous for them?

Shameless self bump

Yeah, Acapulco basically has the biggest cartel presence that's far from the US border...and it's because of all the Western tourists who become their customers.

I'm in Michigan, and I don't remember seeing any. Granted, I never really looked.

Hi. I'm Canadian.

I've tried going to the United States three times (all like over a year ago)
The first time was a success. I got pulled aside and questioned about stuff, but they let me go under the condition that I return within like four weeks (I was flying and had a return ticket for three weeks later). Everything went well.
The second time I tried driving across the border and they stopped me and refused me entry because I apparently don't have sufficient ties to Canada and they didn't trust to me to not just stay in the states forever I guess.
Third time I was flying again and had a return ticket, but they still refused me entry.

I'd like to visit the states again, but since they don't refund you for your plane ticket it's kinda expensive to just keep trying and hoping for the best. Is there anything I can do?

Any recommendations for a few days in Melbourne? I'm from Sydney and am looking to experience the nightlife and culture with a few mates.

Looking for good accommodation (anything from a good hostel to a cheap hotel) and for things to do at this stage, as well as some recommended bars/clubs we should check out.

Thanks for your help.

Not so sure about accommodation, but I can give some recommendations for nice/comfy bars and pubs.

CBD: Loop Roof and Rooftop Bar are nice outdoor places. New Amsterdam, Workshop and E Fifty Five are cool and quiet bars. I hate clubs, but the Colonial Hotel usually has something happening on a Friday or Saturday night.

Collingwood: Good streets for bar-hopping are Brunswick St, Gertrude St and Smith St. Gertrude has my all-time favourites Catfish and the Workers Club; both have good music. Naked for Satan and Bar Open are fun on Brunswick. The Tote is supposedly the be-all, end-all of Melbourne pubs, but I've only been there for gigs. It'a alright. When I can conquer my crippling self-hatred to go outside, I usually go to Collingwood.

Other places: There are a few good pubs around Queen Vic Market; the Crimea, Prudence and the Drunken Poet. Getting the tram up from Queen Vic eventually gets you to Sydney Rd, which is another nice area for bar hopping.

Now it's time for me to sit back and be called a hipster cunt by the rest of Melbourne /trv/.
>>
>>1090996
And in terms of things to do, checking out the above areas in the day could be a nice outing; they all have their complements of interesting little shops and cafes. Carlton Gardens are right next to the CBD and Collingwood, and have the Exhibition Building (which you usually can't get into unless there's a convention) and the Museum.

The Art Galleries in the CBD are free; I enjoy going to them occasionally, but, y'know, it's art n shit.

Just wander around.

I'm thinking about going to Croatia in early June. So far my plan is to start in Zagreb, stay there for a couple of days maybe, depending on how much there is to do there. After that I would drive down to Plitvice and then to Zadar. I was thinking I could end my trip in Sibenik or Split.
Are these places worth a visit? I want to see nature and experince culture (maybe go to a museum, see old buildings, stuff like that) and avoid places that are really expensive or just not nice. I don't think I'll be staying for longer than two weeks, most likely a week and a half.

drop zagreb from your list...not a whole lot to see there.
>>
>>1090769
Zagreb is a fun day, but not much more.

I loved Plitvice. The long walk around (Route K, the one you SHOULD do) takes roughly 6 hours. That's another day. Be there early (9 or 10) to beat the masses a little. It's incredibly beautiful.

Zadar is lovely! It's where I stayed for a week. From there you can do a day in Paklenica National Park (great hikes, try the Velika Paklenica trail, great climbing too), a day on Pag, a day-long boat trip to the Kornati Islands etc. The old town is great. Watch the sunset at the Sea Organ.

Be sure to visit Krka National Park near Sibenik. Beautiful waterfalls, trip on the river, possibility to take a swim. Haven't visited Sibenik itself. Split is a great day out too, but too mass-touristy for me to spend much longer.
>>
>>1090798

The waterfall national park sounds cool, I think I'll go there. How much money did you spend on hostels/hotels and food on your trip? Did you take a bus to your trips or did you rent a car? Any opinion as to which is better?

Hey trv!

Does anyone have any great tips for Krakow and surrounding areas?

Interested in anything that has to do with nature, culture, anything really.

For krakow city Im looking for great places to eat, drink coffee and maybe some underground jazz bars or something. Pretty much anything interesting.

Is Auschwitz worth it? desu it doesnt seem very interesting. So much political conflict and biases that i dont believe I will learn anything.

Salt mines look good tho, but are they really a tourist trap?

Most Poles hate the fact that people travel half way across the world and instead of going to beautiful places around the country they visit a shitty place like this. Poland has a 1000 year history, all sorts of nature, and yet people go to a place jews made their own. Oh I wonder how that is...

Wieliczka is definitely worth a visit, even if it does have too many tourists.

It's the definition of
>chat shit, get banged.

Been to NK, know at least 40people who did the same. They tell you to not fuck up a million times and that you will end up in a gulag.
Same as smuggling drugs to Indonesia, get busted, face a firing squad.

Play by the rules and you won't have problem.

Yes but he *had* to steal the banner so he could impress the girls at the hostel about the time he stole from North Korea. Simpy visiting North Korea these days is so blasé, especially as part of an organized tour group (ugh).

He could even post pics on Reddit and acquire all the glorious upboat karma.

Well, right or wrong, he knew the consequences beforehand. NK isn't a "walk-in" state and anyone going there is pretty familiar with the totalitarian dictatorship and their policies.

Expect the Champs De Lysse/Monmatre to be full of Arabs. You wouldn't expect Times Square to be reflective of New York, and so don't do the same with Paris. Its a great city, the best thing I can advise is to walk around and see it for yourself.
