Any black people on here?

What are some of the places you've experienced racism? Was thinking of visiting Eastern Europe - Slovakia - but not sure of what to expect. Anyone have experiences they'd like to share?

Most Asian countries.

Interesting, I've never experienced racism in east Asia as a black person. It seemed to me that the people in that region are too polite and "beta" to be racist toward you.
>>
>>1086207
Eastern Europe has the potential to be worse than the states - something I imagine a lot of Black Americans are not aware of.

You can be flat out rejected if you try to get into certain clubs.

You don't need to be black to know this stuff. Also, while this is a generalization it is a fairly good mindset to have when looking to travel - the more liberal a place, the less they are likely to give a shit

Public transport does not accept cash. Get an Oyster card. It just might save you from relentless tutting and strong looks of disapproval.
>>
>>1087248
You can buy tickets or travel cards with cash but it's generally more expensive. Get an oyster card or use a contactless card, which is exactly the same rate with less hassle.

Don't stop walking in busy areas, be aware of your personal belongings and open pockets. Use Citymapper for planning any public transport.

Do the typical tourist shit, get fast track tickets if it's a thing. Don't eat near any major tourist attraction because as usual the prices will be jacked.

Depending on your budget, go see a West End show. Go drinking in Soho. Walk around Hyde Park or up Primrose Hill.

Hello guys! It is New Year soon which means that you should travel around. Where to go and how to spend your vacation? Or, if you don't work, what fun can you do this winter?
I strongly suggest you to visit Ukraine. I will post here the reasons why should you go there. I was Ukraine in winter 2014-2015, in Crimea in summer 2014, in Russia (all my life :DD) so I know what I am talking about. Pro-tips on how to visit Chernobyl (or to be more precisely Pripyat, a place where a nuclear accident happened in 1986) and how to get a Ukrainian gf included below.
You can also go to this website to read some more: http://ua-travelling.com/en/
And remember to always check https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Main_Page and http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page for each particular city if you go there, for example: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Odessa
Ukraine promo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZMMJo7jOTQ
Here are 7 reasons why you should go to Ukraine now/this summer/this autumn/this winter:

1) Ukraine is cheap.
All post soviet countries are cheap, that is no surprise. Russia is cheap too (however, some big cities like Moscow or Saint-Petersburg are overpriced though). But Ukraine is cheap everywhere, even in Kyev. You can see yourself:

http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Russia&country2=Ukraine&city1=Moscow&city2=Kiev

Consumer Prices in Kiev are 43.58% lower than in Moscow
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Kiev are 55.10% lower than in Moscow
Rent Prices in Kiev are 70.47% lower than in Moscow
Restaurant Prices in Kiev are 57.58% lower than in Moscow
Groceries Prices in Kiev are 38.37% lower than in Moscow

This difference is even WAY higher if you come from Germany/Sweden/France etc.

You can get a fucking cheap ticket from Lviv to Kiev by train, it will take 1 night for the trip and cost you 100-200 UAH which is 7 EUR. Just fucking 7 EUR for a fucking train trip which will take 7-8 hours.

Renting an apartment? 300 UAH/day for a center nice and cozy apartment in Lviv with double bed. Fucking 12 EUR a day! One night in hostel is just 4-5 EUR in Lviv. Kyiv is slightly more expencive but this is still amazingly cheap. Don't forget to use websites like https://www.airbnb.com/ and https://www.booking.com/ where you can find anything: from a shitty room in a commieblock to a whole house (just 40 EUR a day) or a very nice apartment.
Pizza delivery in Kiev - 150 UAH, 1350 grams. Fucking 5 euro for more than 1 kilo of pizza. "You gotta be kiddin me, Russiaball" you think. Nope, I am not.

2) Ukraine is a friendly country.
I am serious now. Generally, slavs are friendly to all the foreigners. However, in Russia you will have a better attitude if you look like you have money.
In Ukraine people care less about money (because they're not spoiled with money and are not used to buy a new iPhone every year). Despite me being Russian and talking Russian in Kiev and Lviv literally EVERYONE was super friendly.
>>
3) Ukraine is diverse.
It has an average-tier slav places like Kyiv with commieblocks. A student town with loads of young people (and grills too) like Kharkiv. It has e/b/in Lviv which I personally just love (IT IS AMAZING DURING WINTER AND NY THERE), it looks very European and cozy, it has loads of restaurants, beerplaces, bars etc. There are other smaller places like Uzhgorod where you can see some old castles. There is also Odessa where you can swim in the sea during the summer (that is what I will do this summer, I will go to Odessa or a place around it). You can also do camping and bring your own tent. Many people do that and you will also meet some very friendly people there. You can pretty much find anything you want. There was also an IWO recently of a guy from Slovenia(?) who went to rural parts and it looked also nice.
Look at this video of Kiev https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBGHdqXuD0E looks e/b/in and 10/10.
And Lviv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqgoOpfyE84
Or take a look at Bukovel which has mountains (in winter many people go there for mountain skiing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAXW6NVx6Po

4) Ukraine has relatively nice beer and a good food. Of course, Ukrainian beer is not as good as Belgian or British. But it is way better than Russian. It is also cheap, about 0.80 euro per bottle in a shop.
Food tastes like an average slav food (which I personally find nice). And it is also cheap.

5) West Ukraine is 100% safe. All those "bandera" places always had much lower murder or rape rates compared to Crimea and Downbuss.
Of course you have to follow all the general safety rules, however places like Lviv are super safe even at night. Even considering the current happenings in Ukraine, it is still fucking safe.

220KB, 700x525px
6) You will be able to help Ukrainians by doing some currency exchange :DD Gibe your euros or dollars, they need it now X--DD
I spent 1000 USD in Ukraine during the winter and I don't regret it at all.

7) Ukraine has good looking girls who are also not spoiled with money. Cutes picrelated (my personal selection).
Now, I want you to go to Ukraine and meet a girl there. I am not kidding.
Ukrainian girls are much more extraverts and emotional (somewhat similar to Spanish type) than Russians. They're much more friendly and easy going. And you don't have to put a lot of assburger effort for a conversation. Just meet a Ukrainian girl online, help her with English in skype a couple of times, and then you meet her in real life and she shows you around (and you don't have to say much, just say "yes that's pretty"). Eventually you will build up a conversation.
Where do you meet Ukrainian girls? It's fucking Interpals. Ukrainian girls are super-friendly there. They will gladly accept your help with English/German/whatever and will gladly show you around their city. Stop being an assburger retard, Spede, and meet your Ukrainian QT today!

Usually what I hear people doing is just selling their shit and then buying the equivalent in their new country. No idea what to do but I have some pretty big items that I would like to keep, like my 32" TV and my bicycle.

Is it usually a reliable thing to get a container delivered? Or does it depend on the countries and shit like that?

Going for the first time to Cusco with my gf. We'll be there for a week, and mostly want to see beautiful views and eat amazing food. It'll be mostly a chill trip (it's out only vacation week this year), so besides the obligatory day trip to Machu Pichu, we don't plan to be moving too far from Cusco itself.

Still, I'm interested on getting tips from anyone who's been there, specially if they're different than what most tourist offices would tell you. Any particular must-see place, must-try food, must-anything?

Any tip would be appreciated.

Hello /trv/ I'm here with the classic "I'm an American who dreams of moving to Europe" thread. I know it will be very hard, but I know for a fact it is possible.
I am 18 years old and a senior in highschool. What decisions can I make that will lead me to living a life abroad?

Well, work on your grades and go to university, it will be a lot easier to move to Europe if you have higher education. You can either move for undergrad or move there after you finish university.

Even if you only have one Irish grandparent, then you're entitled to Irish citizenship meaning you can live and work in any EU country.

Yes, that's right - if you're only quarter Irish and have never even set foot in the country you can become a citizen.

I stayed near Karlsplatz/Karlschirche last visit, at Am Konzerhaus.
http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-1276-hotel-am-konzerthaus-mgallery-collection/room.shtml

Good central spot just outside the ring, a nice walking distance to Cafe Sperl, nachtmarket, Karlschirche, opera house, safe university foot traffic at all hours (felt safe to walk at night, and vienna is a safe/prosperous place anyway). You can walk easily,or the tram/bus that doing the Ringstrasse as a quick "tour" without walking. Sisi tour is popular for all tourists, great gold/gem/religious artifacts (too many to count) and I suggest a rush-through of the 10million china patterns at the end, and peek out the door at the library bit at the end, where some of the first known printed "travel guide" books that belonged to Sisi are located, and great early advertising of vacations in art.

If 300+ art musuems aren't your thing If you want to get out of the city and weather is nice, I highly suggest a half day trip to go down to medieval Melk's Benedictine monastery with intact library (spot a theme? lol), train one way and danube cruise back through wine valleys with ruins and "typical" austrian architecture in several towns. You'll be back in time for early dinner and some evening plans. Vienna is lovely and all that, but realize it was COMPLETELY rebuilt after WWII. Storybook cool stuff exists just outside of town.

Luggage, /trv/

Hard-shell or soft? Favourite brands, features you've learned to love/hate? Any recommendations?

AKA I need to get new luggage for the first time in years and have no idea what to buy. Mostly fairly short city-based work trips with the occasional, longer jaunt in random places where bulky suitcases may or may not be practical.

So you will be fine with a carry-on right?
Rule of thumb: about 200€ get you a very decent product and 450€ is the upper limit.

There're roughly 4 categories of it:
>Super budget discounter for 10-100€
You use them, they will break down, you buy a new one no fucks given
>the middle class, 150-250€.
Bit lighter, better quality, will last about 5-10 years if something breaks down it's usually covered by warranty and worth to get it replaced
>the upper class, 300-450€
Again lighter, tougher and better quality. Will last at least 10 years. Something breaks, they repair or replace it.
>The luxury carry on 600-?????€
You just pay for a design, they can be as low quality as a super budget one or a more styled upper class product.

From 150-450€ you get what you pay for, more money means lighter weight, better materials, more comfort, more luggage room etc. after that you won't gain anything practical worth it.

Hard or soft, 2 or 4 wheels etc, are pure preference, for me it's hard and 4 wheels but there's nothing wrong with a soft 2 wheeled.

Go to the next department store with a good luggage section and take a look at the upper middle Delsey and lower upper class Samsonite products. There're other awesome companies but those two are pretty good benchmarks what you should get for your money, the rest are design preferences.

For the next larger checked bags category, just add about 100€ to the price celling.
>>
>>1089581
A carry-on will probably cover two-thirds of my trips, though I'll probably also want something larger as well.

Anyone use an aluminium Rimowa (or other aluminium luggage)? I'm rather taken by how they look but that'll mean fuck all if the price/performance ratio sucks.
>>
>>1089730
I absolutely love the Rimowa aluminium design but they're really heavy
At least for carry-on a concern, as the usual cap is at 8kg.

The cabine trolly weights 3.7kg empty with 35L, so you can realistically only pack 4.3kg into them before a lot of airlines will no longer allow it as carry-on.
The Samsonite light shock offers you the same for about 80€ less, weights only 1.7kg empty (so 6.3kg for your stuff) and 36l volume. Downside not so /fa/ and a bit less durable.

This is one thing that really needs to get nerfed when Earth 2.0 comes out.
I know it's the least fun thing imaginable, but go through your belongings, shaking out your clothes vigorously and checking under all the seams in your backpack. It's fucking weird the way they hide; their body language is almost like a human cowering into a niche to avoid being seen.
Do the search every day until you can get to a laundromat.

OPTION 2: Find someone at home who has a big freezer, and throw everything in there for a few weeks. That kills bugs and eggs.
>>
Protip, always hang your stuff when checking into hostels or seedy hotels, and sleep as naked as possible.

Aight thanks, I hope I can make do with that until I find a hostel with a self service laundry (otherwise they'll never let me check in/throw my backpack and shoes into a drier)

I swear there should be businesses dealing with this shit for travelers. Like, a place where you throw your backpack into a "hot room/sauna" and have a special room to get decontaminated yourself. Seriously, how is that not a thing in touristy countries?

I sleep on a greyhound all the time. It's not comfortable and a lot of time you might be crammed next to someone, but you can still do it. You can also sleep in the greyhound stations assuming you have a ticket with you that's going somewhere in the near future.
>>

Flying is cheaper. 24hr is a stupid amount of time to travel if you aren't traversing the globe.

If you can sleep in a LazyBoy, on a couch, sitting upright in a chair...if you ever practice that...you will do it easily. So practice? Take a nap occasionally in a chair. Blow-up neck pillow will help, esp a window seat to lean on. If you never ever get that tired that you can fall asleep sitting up, then you might doze in and out only briefly, or you might wish you could, but you don't. Whatever. You'll eventually get through it and it's over. Longest I've flown nonstop is 14hr, and sometimes you sleep, sometimes you don't. Frequent flyers never know if their body cooperates.

If you have a mood disorder, it aint worth going into sleep deprivation. Get on a plane.

Why the fuck are American airports so horrible? I get they have more security procedures than other countries but at the very least they could have a "help me I'm about to miss my fucking flight because you assholes take so long" express line or have more lines so people can get through it faster.

Unions. It's the same here in Canada. They purposely do everything slowly because if they do things fast they will be expected to do things fast all the time. Unions protect shitty workers.

When I was coming back from Panama I got my bags searched and they had about 10 people in line for questioning and searches and only 3 border agents doing anything. About 5 other border guards were just standing around, walking back and forth, getting coffee or some shit...
