I've got 4 days over Easter break to spend in Netherlands, have been to Amsterdam and not interested in visiting on this trip.

Recommendations of where else to see? I'll be driving, interests include: cycling/running, architecture, beaches and cultural cities.

Also, staying in one place, vs staying in a couple of places over the 4 days.

>>
If you like modern architecture I recomend Almere, however anytime longer then one hour might end in depression...
(take it from a native)
>>
>>1091792
Almere, previously voted the ugliest city in The Netherlands. Seriously man, don't go there.

Go to places like Utrecht, Groningen, The Hague Leiden or Rotterdam.

The Hague might be a good move for you as it's 15 minutes by tram to Scheveningen beach.

I'm not a big fan of Rotterdam myself, but it is modern and I do love the harbor.

Groningen is a personal favorite.

Honestly, the country is small and compact enough that you can just stay in one place and head out from there to the everywhere else early in the mornings, and then drive back at night.

Is it dangerous to visit Batman?

Batman is very close to ISIL territory, once word gets around I don't want jihadist showing up at my hotel to kill me.

Its not dangerous really, the territory at the Syrian boarder is actually held by the Kurds and Al Quamishhli by the Syrian government, both western friendly. Probably the most dangerous thing possibly is a Turkish crackdown on Kurds in the area, just because its mainly a Kurdish town, but even then it would be very unlikley.

Batman itself has very little to do in it, as its an oil city and its a bit old and industrial. Not much information on it except there's some ruins in the outskirts of city (although because it sees few tourists, nobody really knows about the quality of the ruins) and the major attraction is taking photos of the 'batman' signs.

Might be worth it for a day trip if you find yourself in Diyarbakir, but otherwise its a long way off the beaten track for nothing much.

I traveled to Fucking, Austria. I even posted a picture of it on /trv/.

So, fiancee and I are going abroad in June. We will be spending a month in Romania participating in a museology/archeology program. We plan on spending some time before and after around Europe, and have weekends free. Along with any general advice, I have some specific questions...

- what is the best way for us to have cell phone with data service while we travel? I know i can get a sim with data cheap in Romania, but we will be in other countries (see itinerary below) do I have to get a new sim in every country? Does orange not work in neighboring countries?

May 28 - Fly westjet to Dublin via Canada- Spending a few days in Dublin to see family there
June 3 - Fly Ryanair to Budapest (morning) - this seems the best way to get to our destination... open to suggestions)
June 3/4 - Take Euronight Train from Budapest to Sibiu (seems like if we book in advance we can get a private 2 bunk sleeper for $85 per person each way.)
June 4/5 - arrive in Sibiu at 7am (Our rooms arent available in Sibiu until Sunday afternoon or evening, but we are allowing an extra day in case of mix ups or delays coming from Budapest. We may stay a day in Budapest or get to Sibiu a day early and stay there... just some insurance)

from the 5th to the 2nd of July we are in Romania in Sibiu at the program. Looking for weekend activities and night time stuff.

July 2- take the night train from Sibiu to Budapest (same arrangement) arrive 9am on July 3rd.
July 4 - 5pm flight on Wizz from Budapest to Madrid (extra day in Budapest in between again)
July 4 - likely we will take a train that same day from madrid to Alicante where our Irish family will be vacationing, and meet up with them
July 7 - fly Ryanair to Paris in the afternoon, 3 days in france (i really want to go to bayeux)
July 11 - take the train to london in the AM, spend 2 days in UK (where are best castles near london?)
July 13 - fly thomas cook back to the states

total expense is around $1,700 each (excluding cabs, buses, etc)

>June 3/4 - Take Euronight Train from Budapest to Sibiu (seems like if we book in advance we can get a private 2 bunk sleeper for $85 per person each way.)
Make sure you have the 2 bunk sleeper, it's quite unpleasant otherwise, which my friends and I found out the hard way - I was the only one who was able to get some sleep. If the bunk's not possible, opt for a bus, but be sure to book in advance.

>Sibiu weekend activities and night time stuff.
There some nightlife around the central square/paita mare, should keep you busy enough. Includes one music club that I know of - think it's simply called Music Pub. Very nice city centre with a handful of museums. If you like hiking, the Făgăraș Mountains are close by, and there's plenty of cabanas to stay overnight. Pic related, Făgăraș near Podragu cabana. Otherwise, if you like cities like Sibiu, pay a visit to Sighișoaro or Brașov (or any of the old Siebenbürgen). Hell, if you've got a weekend, you can explore quite a bit of the country if you can make the transport work. There's quite a bit of domestic tourism in the country, a direct souvenir from the Iron Curtain which made travel abroad uncommon.
>>
>>1091725
thanks for the input!
we definitely found the 2 bunk sleeper. i plan on even seeing if they have any private bathroom ones available because i know they exist.

i have to say we will be doing a lot of physical labor during the program, so our prefered activities will likely involve music, art, theatre, architecture, sight seeing, etc.

In that case, look into the Siebenbürgen, all seven of them being
>Bistritz (Bistrița)
>Hermannstadt (Sibiu)
>Sächsisch Regen (Reghin)
>Kronstadt (Brașov)
>Mediasch (Mediaș)
>Mühlbach (Sebeș)
>Schässburg (Sighișoara)
All right in history and architecture, the bigger ones will have something to offer in the art/music/theatre department as well. Bucharest is probably the cultural hotspot, but in itself it isn't much to look at, as there isn't that much to see. Also, quite far from Sibiu.

Maybe consider the Alba Iulia citadel too. While the rest of Alba Iulia isn't much to look at, the citadel houses plenty of architecture, a few museums, performances etc. Also, I hear Cluj is nice too, but I'll only be in Romania again come August, so I can't say much other than what my Romanian friends have told me.

If you want to eat, don't eat in the most obvious places. Look around, go through alleyways. The food is gonna be significantly cheaper, and probably better tasting. Same goes for coffee shops. Also try to explore it as much as you can. Those main attractions are cool and all, but the you will get the most of your trip if you go there without a plan.

Should I reveal the fact that I did a lot of self-learning by myself? I only took a beginner course at uni (I'm a freshman), but I did a lot of self-learning by myself. My Spanish friend can understand my text messages although my Spanish probably looks weird as hell to him. I also learned to roll my Rs. I am thinking about minoring in Spanish just for fun (it is unrelated to my major).

Sure. Use that as an argument for how ambitious & self-driven you are.
I'm not American so I have no idea how the major-minor system works. Do you believe you are currently at a level where you could follow university level conversations?

Hello /trv/ I'm sure this thread has been done to death already but I am in something of a bind.

My friend wants me to go to Bangkok with him from may to june. naturally I am not averse to the idea, but I would like to save as much money as possible, which of course means I am interested to know where I can get the cheapest possible airfare without being scammed.

My friend is adamant about using flighthub. I've heard it's a shit site known for fucking its customers over with extra fees and "mistakes". I really don't know any ticket sites aside from yulair (which is great but it's not showing me anything for BK at the moment) because I am new to travelling. I'm sure we've all been there.

Thanks in advance

It's one of a million third party sites. They are ok until you are in a bindor need to change flights and they often cancel flights then ask you to pay an increased amount

Stick to the big names like Expedia or Priceline or buy from the airline. I use momondo or kayak to see the playing field
>>
>>1091533

How would you rank redtag?
>>
Never used that specific site but i've generally had bad luck with 3rd party sites. My friends and I actually signed up for a flight deal notifier and we just share the email which eliminates all the work! Too many scam sites.

Why do people say that Cancun is just like another USA city?

I'm curious
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Cancun is pretty much an extension of the Florida Keys
>>
>>1091388
How so?
>>
>>1091387
Basically the part of Cancun that most people see is the resort area. So the whole beach area is just built up with resorts, restaurants, shopping malls, activities that focus on tourists and so on. Basically everyone except the cleaning ladies speaks English there. The restaurants are all either American chains or serve Americanized food (think senor frogs). They're all there to serve American, Canadian, or European tourists.

Then there's the other side of Cancun. The actual city where people live. It's not as pretty looking, the restaurants are mostly local food and just little cantinas or taco stands, it's actually quite a gritty place or just typical for Mexico (imo much more entertaining but I'm a RealTraveler). People who go to resorts visit as well but usually for just one day, those who only go to party in Cancun don't even bother.

Traveling to Orlando to do the whole Disney thing. As I will be split from my party often I was wondering how burners work in the us of a. Can I just get a cheap pre paid and throw it when I leave. What are the best options and how does pre paid work over there.
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Its pretty self explanatory. Youll be getting a junk phone but since its a burner thats to be expected. You can find a gorillian of them at any walmart, 7/11, most gas stations, etc etc. From what ive been reading about how europe does things, it seems its more or less the same.

The only caveat i can think of is possible roaming charges, but if youll be in the same area the whole trip that wont apply to you. Things like data and the like will be blatantly marked on the packaging.
>>
Do you need to register them under your name with a picture id ?
>>
>>1091378
>Can I just get a cheap pre paid and throw it when I leave. What are the best options and how does pre paid work over there.
Typically you buy a cheap phone at wal-mart or kmart, buy cards in certain dollar amounts, and call some phone number to activate it. Maybe if lucky, some person at a register and counter in the electronics dept will help you get it charged up and ready to use. There are many choices and each store sells whatever brand they deal with, from cricket to whatever.

If you have a magicjack, and wifi, you can do long distance using internet. Viber is the texting app alternative to actual calls.

You know, there are a lot of foreign workers at disney. I daresay you might find some forum out there that gives you an idea of if roaming is an issue in the park. Might get that answered by email too.

Plans where you prepay and buy cards like that do not use credit cards or ID. I loaded one up for a grandparent who had dementia and a foreign maid/caretaker, so neither could do international calling on some unlimited phone bill. It gave me control over charges. I used a phone from walmart. Buy a year in advance of say 400mins per month for a total bill of $70 incl the phone.

Hey guys i live in spain, Im 24 Male and speak native US english.

Been trying to find work here for months and shits dry as fuck, so im going to the UK to work in a hotel through a work agency, its supposedly next to a university and a train station so i could move to other areas easily.

How's life in the UK, any tips for someone going there to work for the first time?
People tell me they go to bed really early, everythings fuckin expensive theres no night life etc.

How much of it is true?

Britbong here, whereabouts are you moving?

>They go to bed really early
There's no hard-and-fast rule to this, most people I know are awake into AM hours even with work pending. Depends entirely on the crop of people you'll be with.

>Everything's fucking expensive
This is highly variable depending on location. London and the south are generally much more expensive than Northern cities like Manchester or Liverpool. The UK does have a strong currency which might not be too kind to you coming from Spain though.

>There's no night life
Again, the quality and subcultures of nightlife depends where you are but keep in mind that Britain has a very, very deeply ingrained binge drinking culture and a lot of people have lax attitudes towards drugs and smoking. When you live in a cultural graveyard of stagnant weather and politics, you learn how to drink.
>>

Moving from Spain to the UK will depress the shit out of you. So many Brits are leaving the UK for Spain to escape the dull mediocrity of life in a grey, highly taxed shithole.

I left to move to Cyprus myself, and every time I go back to visit I just want to leave again after I see my family and friends.

But that's just me, everybody is different. Cypriots here are flocking to London when they leave high school because it's cool.

Hey /trv/ planning to drive from Connecticut to New Orleans this May. We may end up stopping briefly in Washington D.C on the way down as well, but New Orleans is our main destination. Any recommendations for stops on the way? And what are things to do and avoid doing in New Orleans? Also, is it feasible to camp out somewhere, campgrounds etc. instead of renting a room? Thanks.

Stop in Charleston and Savannah on the way there.

>And what are things to do and avoid doing in New Orleans?
I dunno, what are your interests? What I may find fun and what you find fun may be two different things. As for shit to avoid, stay in the CBD, FQ, Marigny, Treme, and the Garden District. The area around the huge park in mid-city (or is it uptown?) isn't that sketchy and is okay.

As for campgrounds, there are a few national parks nearby, don't know the rules for those though.

depending on which route you take, you could stop in atlanta and see the coke factory and an awesome aquarium, the dixie stampede in pigeon forge, tn, obviously the smithsonian in DC is the best side trip, but other than that id probably advise you to vacate the south asap

new orleans is fucking great tho. but you end up eating a lot.
-beignets at cafe du monde (bring back chickory coffee, beignet mix, and a cute coffee mug)
-muffulettas at central grocery (bring back some olive salad)
-oysters Rockefeller at antoines (bring a nice dinner jacket, this place is serious business.. worth it)
-jazz everywhere, but especially Preservation Hall and the street band Tuba Skinny (look them up and DO NOT MISS THEM.)
-awesome poboys everywhere
-gumbo at the old coffee pot restuarant
-dooky chase's my god dooky chase's
-maybe look for an artist named Nancy Jo in Jackson square, she does beautiful pastel portraits, awesome way to spend the day, hanging out in jackson square, getting a portrait done (rare opportunity) talking to a very interesting lady. ask the other street people, she only drives down certain days bc she doesnt live in Nola.

i dont know about camping but if you want to spend a little time in a nice place i can recommend Lafitte Guest House.

Some interesting history, as it's the only principality left over from the holy roman empire of german nations that still exist today. If you're there go to Vaduz for a afternoon.

I forgto to ask the most important questions:
Where are you form and why are you going there?

(I'm pretty curios as I was born in Buchs and never heard anyone specifically ask about it. kek)

Not really

Nouns are similar, so if an Italian speaks really slowly to a Spaniard or vice-versa, using context clues they might be able to get an idea, but they're far from mutually intelligible
