Any Aiesecers here? What was your experience like? I am thinking about teaching English in a Latin American country. Is this a good idea? I want to practice my Spanish, but I am a bit worried that Latin America will be dangerous for a girl like me. Also, what is the interview/selection process like? What kind of questions will they ask?
>>1092715
Mixed bag, some are totally legit, some are rag-tag groups that suck. Make sure it's a good organization on the other side and you'll be fine. Also don't expect to be taken good care of, that comes down to your own organization. If you're going to a poor country, you'll be living like the locals. It's fun, but don't expect Contiki crap.
Also Latin America is a very diverse place and varies considerably regarding safety.

>don't expect to be taken good care of
I think "travelling alone" implies that.
They seem to have a lot of projects in Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Are those countries safe-ish?
Also, are they really picky when selecting candidates after the interview? Like do they only pick the people with the most stuff on their CVs to go on these trips? Do they even care about how many extras curricular activities you took part in? I only took part in some volunteering activities.
>>1092978
>I think "travelling alone" implies that.
No, it doesn't, because travelling and living are two different things.
>They seem to have a lot of projects in Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. Are those countries safe-ish?
Those countries are all enormous, and have cities and regions that are very safe as well as ones that can be dangerous. If you have you ask, do some more research on the countries themselves. Do you even know what you're interested in? Be mindful Aiesec doesn't only have branches in "safe" cities and some branches are in absolute shitholes. You need to do a lot of research into the countries you're applying to and the cities themselves. www.wikivoyage.org
>Also, are they really picky when selecting candidates after the interview?
It depends. Are you from a rich Western country? If yes, then the bar is low. I used to do the interview process and we only turned away people who were clueless or annoying. A big part of it is building experience so they don't care about your resume as much as your personality. Just do your research beforehand and show that you're outgoing, organized, and open-minded.
Having said that, your resume will factor into more demanding positions like well-paid positions in Switzerland, etc. If you're looking to go to the developing world for minimal (or possibly no) remuneration, you have nothing to worry about.
What's your preferred travel gear, trv? I've been eyeballing a swissgear backpack, but not sure if I should go for it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here to try this. I'm taking a train to Chicago which arrives at 4pm. I will do a few hours of sightseeing and then around midnight head up to O'Hare and sleep there until my flight at around 7am. First is it possible to go through security at around midnight or 1am at O'Hare? And will they give me shit for sleeping there for a few hours? Also I hear the L is fairly unsafe to ride during the night in Chicago. Is riding the ohare branch of the blue line unsafe during this time as well? Thanks.
>>1093694
>First is it possible to go through security at around midnight or 1am at O'Hare? And will they give me shit for sleeping there for a few hours?
Certainly possible to go through security at that time of night in general, but airlines don't always let you check in for flights that far in advance. If you've already got a boarding pass, I don't think it would be a problem. But your gate probably won't have been assigned yet, etc. Worst case scenario, you have to camp somewhere outside the security area.
As for the sleeping a few hours, I've never done it in O'Hare, but have done it elsewhere with no problems. Hardest part is usually finding someplace to sleep that doesn't hurt. Check out the sleeping in airports website for advice.
Can't help with the L questions; I've been on the L pretty late at night and nothing bad happened to me. But I don't know Chicago all that well.
>>1093696
If I get a mobile boarding pass emailed to me do I have to check in?
>>1093702
If you have a boarding pass, you are checked in. But I have been in airports that don't let passengers in to the secured area before gates have been assigned--most recently, I showed up at LaGuardia with a boarding pass at 2AM or so for a flight that was supposed to leave at 6 something. They made me wait outside of security until four.
Hello /trv/
due to an advice from a friend, I come here for help.
I leave for Syria in a week (funny there's a thread on here about anon wanting to go to a shithole, tag along friend!).
I already packed my external batteries, my chargers, my universal outlet plugs.
What I'm looking for here is things that I need to get and pack with me that wouldn't cross my mind. I've been planning this trip for a couple of weeks but to be honest I was only serious about it in the last couple of days.
I just want to let everyone know that I am able to get into Syria legally and have permission to enter the country LEGALLY.
This thread could also be used to travel to very bad places or places that really lack electricity 12+ hours of the day.
Please help, and thanks in advance.
TL:DR What to pack for Syria
a Kalashnikov
What I have packed so far.
all the usual shit (clothing , toiletries, etc) Plus
2 20000mah external batteries
extra phone
2 universal plugs
headphones and earphones
water purifier (bottle form)
medicine
laptop
I also forgot to mention that I'm staying there for 3 months (at the most)
OP here.
I forgot I need a good reliable VPN to use in the country
So im thinking about going to Cape Town South Africa in May in my persuit in stepping foot on every continent.
Is it a decent holiday or should i go somewhere else
It's pretty good. Cape Town and the surrounds if definitely more scenic that what you'll experience in Johannesburg.
Plan an itinerary of what you want to do and see.
May be a be a bit close to the Winter season so you may experience cold wet weather, but the weather here as been lagging behind more than usual, so you might be good.
go to table mountain near cape town.
Early in february (during the Carnaval week to be exact) I spent five days in Los Roques, Venezuela.
Anything you gents want to know about that place?
Did you enjoy it? How were the women? Was the food good? Was it safe? What was the weather like, too hot? How far did your money go? Post more pictures as well, friend.
>Did you enjoy it?
Quite! Didn't see much of Venezuela proper (from the airport to the hotel and then back to the airport), but Los Roques is pretty damn awesome. It benefits from being so separated from the rest of Venezulea, so the problems there only marginally seep into the island. The beaches there are breathtaking, perfect place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Also, one of the best places for kitesurfing I've been.
Something I loved about the main Island where the tourists stay, is that there are no hotels there, just small posadas.
>How were the women?
Again, did not see much of the continental Venezuela and is people. In Los Roques, the local inhabitants were mostly typical Caribbean people, with deeply tanned skins. The vast majority of the tourism there is foreign, almost no Venezuelans.
>Was it safe?
Yeah, no problem whatsoever in the Island. Like I mentioned, in that sense Los Roques is pretty different from the rest of Venezuela. As they depend entirely of the tourists, the locals won't ever bother you in any way.
Things are VERY different in the rest of Venezuela, and we were warned again and again to be extra careful even in the Airport.
>What was the weather like, too hot?
It was awesome, perfect beach weather.
>How far did your money go?
Ridiculously cheap. Of course, that's only if you exchange dollars in the black market, if you do it going by the legal exchange rate, you will run out of money real quick. Fortunately, in Venezuela EVERYBODY deals in the exchange black market, they are starving for american currency.
For example, we spent a night at a Marriot hotel near the airport before going to Los Roques. Dinner and bar tab for six people, drinking wine and cocktails, was 170 thousand bolivares. A small fortune for a venezuelan, but for us, it was $200 thanks to the black market rates.
And pic taken from the airplane, one of the first views you get from Los Roques.

I'm in a bad way right now. I'm really depressed, I have no motivation and I'm just fucking miserable. The last thing I did that I actually felt happy was when I vacationed to Italy in December. I think I want to work abroad for some time. I did some googling and found this website. Does anybody know if this is a credible program? Has anyone done it?

Bump! Not op but I'm interested to hear Anons's opinions on this one too.
Never heard of this particular one before, but it just seem like an easy way to get hardly-paid foreigners to come do shitty work. Probably not a "scam" per se, but when they say 'minimum 200€ per month', they probably really mean 'maximum 200€ per month'. If you have the money, go for it, if not, don't expect to make something close to minimum wage.

do you know of any other programs or opportunities? I'm American and I have no idea how to get a job overseas
So my wife and me love traveling and we already did a lot of it. Now we have a child and of course do not want to finish traveling. We think about doing a SEA trip because it's not too hard to get along with a kid there.
Who can share some experiences? Not necessarily SEA-related, but rather about traveling with a child in general?

I travel a lot with my wife and our two kids (6 daughter and 4 son). It can be everything from fun to absolute shit tier.
What I can tell you forget about the "real traveler" thing with a baby at least my wife was always up for adventures and doing crazy things, once we had our first daughter that changed not because of her but "we have to plan, we have to get x,y,z..." and most hostels are out of the equation.
Also you can't pack "light" anymore as you will carry kids stuff, a shit load of kids stuff. Stroller, kids cloths, diapers, stuffed animals, toys, blankets, food, dried milk, dummy's, bottles, Child carrier and other shit you didn't even know it exists.
Flying with a baby can be ok or complete hell. Not just because they can't do the pressure equalization on their own but if it's a bad day a baby can cry for 5-8h straight for no reason. We and all other passengers in the business class totally enjoyed a 11h flight to Sao Paulo with a crying baby and a 2 1/2 year old joining in on the fun...
I wouldn't do it again. So my advise: skip the first 3 years and do day/2day hikes, travel around by car or train and city trips. It's easier and more comfy. Once they turn 3 you get more options, less problems and they might actually remember and enjoy it.
>>1093266
Get together all the toys your child would need to be entertained and then use them to entertain the child in your home until they're at least 10.
Bringing babies on a plane is incredibly disrespectful to other travelers and you're wasting your money dragging a kid to places he won't appreciate while he's too young. It's fantastic parenting to travel a lot with an older child/teenager but it's better off for everyone involved if you just leave him with grandma or something while he's this young.
Fun places to travel where one can go to bars legally at 18?
Not including Germany, I'm already going there soon.
pretty much anywhere in the world that isnt america.

Is traveling a good treatment for depression?
Not really.
Clinical depression or just feeling bummed out (which most people refer to as depression anyways). The latter, yes. The former no.
>>1093074
Clinical depression.
Tell me how universal health care, free education, travel years after highschool with monthly stipend, generous unemployment, up to 2 years off after giving birth to a child with 80 percent of your pay, and luxurious prisons isn't awesome?
How can I get out of americuck and move to the Sanders dream of what america should be?
Currently making ~170k/year working in tech, with no college education. Any way that they would let me in or am I fucked? Would I need to find a job at a nordic tech company? Is it enough to just say 'I'm already successful, heres proof of income, let me in'?
Any guidance on which Nordic country has the best unemployment benefits (if I made the same amount there, would I be able to receive a generous percentage of that going forward ad infinitum?)

Do you have more than 5 years of experience? (Alternatively at least a bachelor's), and currently make over $70k? Just find a job and you have a good chance of a EU blue card, in Sweden at least. Which is the Nordic country you want to live in if you work in tech.

This Russian Visa process is confusing me....
I'll be visiting Russia after 3 months of Europe travel, but apparently the visa is only valid from 3 months after getting it?
Also, I have to make an itinary of everywhere i'll be staying, but I'll be spending about half my nights on the train?
Has anyone else worked out an easy way to get a russian visa in my situation? I'm australian btw, even just a link to sites that work out the visas for you would be fine thanks.

try http://waytorussia.net/Travel/VisaSupport.html as it has alot of hotels listed in many cities. When going to your friendly local russian embassy you need to fill out the name of this company that has the website as the entity as the inviting part.
I suggest you write an email to the embassy and ask, as I only did a few flights and a road trip to one city. I think if you spend more than 24hrs in one city that you need to put it in your itinerary
Helo /trv/. Woke up today recalling that i dreamed about being in Latvia. I was in a hangar with some bureucrats and they were playing a game with match sticks. I won the game (it was money), then i went to the streets and just trspassing th door woke up. Now i want to go there.
