There's been a lot of shitposting about caster supremacy lately, and it's made me think.
What sort of abilities would you give martials in 3.X/PF to balance them to casters?
>>54372408
You can't. Not really anyway. 3.pf casters go far beyond Greek gods with their skills. A martial matching a Greek Demigod still wouldn't be up to snuff.
You have to tone down or limit casters in some way. Then you can focus on giving martials some more tome of battle style options that are more tactical and fantastic.
Just look at tier 3 for an idea.
>>54372408
It's a problem that's already been solved, at least partially. Look at Tome of Battle.
>inb4 anime
Ability to disrupt casting.
The problem with casting is that there's no way to interrupt it so a wizard can constantly spam out spells with no risk.

>THREAD QUESTION:
What lurks in the Oceans of your setting?
I'm considering making players purchase XP in my next game. It's not enough to just acquire it, you gotta spend it on a specific character motivation Arneson-style. What does /osrg/ think? Too harsh?
I was gonna use Dungeon Painter since a few anons brought it up many threads ago. Chose "Oldschool D&D" to be thematic and realized I don't know what the fresh hell half these things are. I assume you're meant to play it by ear, but to make sure, there's no accepted nomenclature or anything right?
>Smith would open his "tripe and keister" (display case on a tripod) on a busy street corner. Piling ordinary soap cakes onto the keister top, he began expounding on their wonders. As he spoke to the growing crowd of curious onlookers, he would pull out his wallet and begin wrapping paper money, ranging from one dollar up to one hundred dollars, around a select few of the bars. He then finished each bar by wrapping plain paper around it to hide the money.
>He appeared to mix the money-wrapped packages in with wrapped bars containing no money, and then sold the soap to the crowd for one dollar a cake. A shill planted in the crowd would buy a bar, tear it open, and loudly proclaim that he had won some money, waving it around for all to see. This performance had the desired effect of enticing the sale of more packages. More often than not, victims bought several bars before the sale was completed. Midway through the sale, Smith would announce that the hundred-dollar bill yet remained in the pile, unpurchased. He then would auction off the remaining soap bars to the highest bidders.
>Through manipulation and sleight-of-hand, he hid the cakes of soap wrapped with money and replaced them with packages holding no cash. The only money "won" went to shills, members of the gang planted in the crowd pretending to win, in order to increase sales.

Because if the Tomb Kings got a 40k equivalent, why not the Vampire Counts? So, last time we discussed the origins of cyber-vampirism through a mad heretek's experiments with Necron nanotechnology, and we covered how the equivalents of the different "vampire" bloodlines could have emerged.
But what about the rest of the VC units? What about the necromancers and the skeletons and all those other ghouls and undead? What do they look like in the grim darkness of the distant future?
>>54353855
>skeletons
Well servo skulls are already a thing. So why not just do the same sort of thing but with the whole skeleton wired up with pistons and cables so it can move around?
>>54354313
So what are their weapons like? Are we sticking to this being a melee-only faction like in Fantasy?
>>54353855
"Nanomancer's" are the 40K equlivant to Necromancers, who, in essence, are Adeptus Mechanicus Members are walking Nanomachine banks who make Corpse Constructs and lesser Cyborgs and Thralls.
>>54354313>>54355750
Skeletons are called "Servotons" bassically there skeletons with a thin layer of nanopast making a thin layer of synthetic skin. there more or less useless and are made to act like low level servitors.
Ghouls and Strigoi are Jokaero/monkeys the Cyber Cult find on various human worlds.
>>54348416
"Cyborks" are low level Thrall who have there Fungus like biology converted to Cyberorgans. yada yada, technobabble. instead of Spores they produce more Nanomachines.

I'm a DM, and I'm a bit bored. My players are about to have a showdown with a lich, and I feel really uninspired. Does anybody have any ideas for spicing up a session? What do you all do when you are bored as a DM?
>>54395956
Bitch there are like 20+ Kinds of Liches in D&D and you wonder why things are stale when you're using the Stock Monster Manual/Orcus Issued arcane Beef jerky?
If it's 4e+, it's your own fault, everything got shafted to Orcus past that point.
>>54395956
>And now, for something completely different
Give your players new character sheets (or better - give them ten minutes to quickly create new characters), and play an episode of the villain's flunkies doing evil stuff. This will give the party a hint of the larger plot by means much better than exposition.
At a later time, after you're done, insert those new PCs as minibosses (or maybe full blown bosses, with a small arc surrounding them), this will make it personal.
>>54396224
I'm playing 5e, but I'm willing to port whatever type of monster you think is cool. I'm trying to make the session not just "We hit eachother till one of us dies."
>>54396303
That is a fantastic idea. I think I will use it sometime soon even if I don't use it next session.

Just refluff PF.
Apologize for shitposting.
Based on the names alone which system would you most want to play? Also from just the name what would you guess the system is about?
>Beneath the Wall
>A Gentleman's Guide to Primitives
>Blorg's Ultimate Survival Climax
>Empires of Gold and Jade
>The Practitioner's Handbook
>Mirrorcatch
Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures
OD&D also has great book names
>>54393653
>Beneath the Wall
Like, in the shadow of it, or actually underground?
>A Gentleman's Guide to Primitives
This sounds delightfully entertaining, but rather narrow in scope.
>Blorg's Ultimate Survival Climax
Use of the word climax makes like rather uncomfortable, and not just in a sexual way.
>Empires of Gold and Jade
Marco Polo adventures?
>The Practitioner's Handbook
This sounds like it could be a really cool mage-type game.
>Mirrorcatch
Sounds like someone heard "Shadowrun" and went, "Oh, so you just mash two unrelated works together? I can do that!"
>>54393756
>Like, in the shadow of it, or actually underground?
A bit of both.
>This sounds delightfully entertaining, but rather narrow in scope.
The game's entire premise is about being rich european nobles with groups of slaves who do magic for you. Your stats are mainly done via what slaves you own.
>Use of the word climax makes like rather uncomfortable, and not just in a sexual way.
Was going for a japanese gameshow kind of feel.
>Marco Polo adventures?
Post apocalyptic world where new Chinese empire resides in California.
>This sounds like it could be a really cool mage-type game.
Essentially, the main idea is a secret mage war run by hundreds of hidden cabals.
>Sounds like someone heard "Shadowrun" and went, "Oh, so you just mash two unrelated works together? I can do that!"
The setting is mainly centered around looking glasses and 'mirror catch boxes'. Basically using light and mirrors to see the unseen. I can see what you mean though.
Who remembers?

Time for a world-building exercise.
In this thread, we will be posting images of creatures, persons and locations.
When you post, choose an image in the thread that catches your eye and come up with a description of what's depicted according to the world we are making. Who the person in the picture is, what the creature depicted is, what's so special about the location in the image, etc.
This works best if you're both posting an image and writing out a description for a previously posted image, but doing either of those rather than both is totally fine, if you don't have that many images or don't feel confident about your writing.
I'll start with three images then anyone is welcome to contribute. Let's start with fantasy images for this one.

The Sanguine Scholars were among the first groups to innovate the arts of healing from setting bones to calling upon divine powers to heal various aliments.
While they are a widly accepted cult they are also accused of some terrible acts, or at least certain members are, such as grave robbing and reanimation of the dead.
While they publicly condemn such acts it is whispered they are willinig to pay for such research to help advance their causes.

Is weird to say that I've never really had a session of any D&D version that would consider to be ruined.
The AD&D campaign our DM ran was actually rather fun and since everything has been ported over to 5e things have been fine.
