A lot of fantasy games include or allow for a PC to accumulate lots of magical or unique gear. How do you do this well (if you can) in a sci-fi game where everything is a lot easier to replicate and manufacture?

This, or items with a history - a rifle that was used to kill a dictator is a little bit more distinguished then one you got at space Wal-Mart.

I mean, it's been 400 years and we still masturbate over Stradivarius violins.
Modern production instruments equal or even better a Strad under certain conditions but there's still no replicas.

Help me with a villain
How do I make my villain a nice, amicable guy who the party can sit down and have a drink with, while still knowing he's their adversary? Say the villain invites them for a drink, coffee, whatever, and they accept. How can I make it a complete non-combat, character development encounter where at no point aggression will occur from either side?

You can't. This is PCs we're talking about. The crazy murderhobos that will not shy away from attacking king in the throne room while the royal guard is present in their full numbers.

Anything that stops them from being a 2 for 1 waiting to happen makes them at least worth considering, and that's ignoring combo pieces.

Totem armor worked well, and was a concept they could refluff easily.

The only actual enchantments in UW were aqueous form and cloudshift, which were both used to prevent blocking and push damage through. The ordeals might as well have been sorceries because they popped the moment you played them, and everything else was instants that targeted for heroic procs.

DnD OOC Thread

>Oh shit son this story is a doozy

So I'm bored and depressed no friends and shit, typical day and shit but suddenly have the idea I should go and hunt for a DND group. It was a long time since I played and stuff and I wanted to make new friends and shit.

I go looking up online and find this meet-up for a dnd game that was just starting that was decently close by. Sweet I thought and I go on the day where everyone was gonna make their characters.

We go and meet up at a Tim Hortons
>INB4 CANADA

A lot of chill people there, the was a guy who knew everythign there was to know about Dnd e5 which was sweet for thew newbies who where there. I didn't mind for newbies but whatever.

The DM tho..

He came in with a group of two other guys sat down and just started to says what's what. The Dm was like a 40-50 year old indian man and the other guys were white boys 18-20. The worst part was they non stopped vaped the entire time, the whole three of them, even though it wasn't allowed in the store but the emploies don't give that many fucks to bother with a group about 10 people big.

So we all pull out our laptops phones book etc. to get ready to make these characters, the DM pulls out pre-made characters and says maybe we should use these, I state "let's just make our on characters and shit man." he's like "okay but I highly recommend these"

Whatever.

So I decide to write up a bard for the first time ever, I'd always stay away from magic users because I normally like to be tank but y'know new people new class.

So DM pulls out blank character sheets for everyone and Guy who knew everything [let's just call him Bookie I dunno] pull out some nicer sheets, chrisp as fuck too, and says we could also use these.

Being nice I decide to grab the DM's sheet instead, Bookie is right beside me too and he glaces at the sheet.

The sheets were the wrong edition and were also missing a lot of shit IE backstory and shit from 5e.

>CONT.

DM starts saying, oh I got these from the right sorce online, we can still use these yatta yatta, of corse I decide to grab Bookie's shit ass nice sheet instead.

After a few hours of shit we all finsh our characters, some of the newbies haven't but Bookie said he can help them finsh online. We are just packed up and DM says we should give him our chracter sheets, I refused because I don't like the chance of my sheet being actidently lost and having to re-write. Most of the newbies hand them over and we spilt for till the next week.

>Next Week

We meet at the Timmie's again and before we start we talk about finding a new place like a real comic store with tables and shit, we agree on this one place and then we start.

Bookie wasn't there and was unable to join the campaign because of reasons? Anyways there's a new guy there as well who couldn't make it last week but had his sheet ready to go, he was a Dragonborn monk and me and him hit off pretty well.

So story begins and theres a job out there to bring this cart to another town through a forrest, we were hired because of goblin attacks and what not so we all head out.

I get really into roleplay and Monk is pulling the cart since he was the strongest and I sit on top playing tunes and what not for the adventure.

Nothing really note worthy here but we get ambushed by goblins cart glows and makes us invisable with a forcefield and we end session there.

>Next week

We head to new place which was fucking a beaut of a comic store, I'd love to return there again. We all sit down the three fucks show up vaping until the room gets misty and we start the game.

This session just entailed us beating the goblins next morning capturing a fat lazy one and heading to town with the cart and apperently we get these boxes as an award but they show us where more gold is and shit.

We and the Monk and the barbarain of the crew go to the inn and get wasted

How do rokz work, /tg/?

Do orkz hollow them out and turn them into proper(if temporary) spaceships? Or can orkz just survive the vacuum of space?

As far as I know, it's a bit of both. They find nice asteroids (Or sizeables chunks of planet) floating in space, make a bit of room, then strap as many rockets to it as orkishly possible.

Also they can only do this when they are able to make energy field technology

I made a game using The Power Armor CYOA, and tl;dr my friend is becoming a BBEG. WHAT DO.

Background
>Present Day: battle suits full of alien tech fall all across the earth
>not long after, a colony of space-faring refugees drop warp around Jupiter and make first contact
>human tech booms
>biological and cybernetic modification of the human body for combat/rehabilitation/specialization/fashion/lifestyle is a daily reality
>the microprocessor (now more powerful than ever) is now playing second fiddle to quantum computation
>nanomachines, son

Political Atmosphere
>America is attempting to regulate suits and recruit/detain suit users, and has named elves public enemies
>EU is in general political disarray
>the caliphates have been shattered
>North Korea has opened its borders fully and integrated with South Korea into the United Korean Republic
>China, meanwhile, has slammed a Red Curtain around its borders
>Russia is in the middle of a full-blown civil war
>Japan is undergoing a second economic boom

The Team
>me and two friends are playing ourselves (because 'tism/power trip fantasy/FRIENDSHIP)
>I am basically Falcon from Captain America: Winter Soldier but with cloaking, a suite of sensors, a pulse rifle and a sniper rifle
>been a protector and a bodyguard for hire since Suitfall, essentially NG by actions (alignments don't matter in this setting, only actions and words)
>Friend 1 (henceforth known as Snake) is a squishy ninja assassin-for-hire
>all stealth, all the time
>CN all the way; pay him and his bean claw are yours to command
>Friend 2 (henceforth known as Rhino)... well
>his suit is the biggest type in-game, a fortress that has a handful of heavily-armed drones on command and can fit up to 15 other people (!!!)
>he has augmented it with the ability to fly, and given it upgraded capacitors, comms, and enviroment control
>his suit is essentially a firebase, signal station, spaceship, siege weapon, and armored transport all rolled into one

Part 2 of ???
>Rhino... is decidedly LE
>when our makeshift home was attacked, he misdirected me into shooting a guy that was already surrendering
>he keeps another member of that same attack as an indentured servant-mercenary of sorts, under constant threat of violence
>he's already blown up half of Area 51 when the original mission was for intelligence gathering

The Situation
>basically, the suits were sent to Earth by an alliance of galactic resistance vs an imperialistic aggressor force that has a significant chunk of known space under its power (if not under heavy influence)
>the aggressor force, meanwhile, had sent and been sending ambassadors and scientists to Earth since the Roswell Incident
>they're coming to either integrate Earth into the galactic political stage as a new member, or to plunder and conquer, depending on who you believe
>my players don't know this
>one of the three main factions in this game is a secret society that wants to link up with the forces coming our way, and elevate humanity to the next level
>the players know of the society, but not their motives
>Rhino has agreed to infiltrate the Yakuza (another faction, that we're already in good with), to fund something
>this something is a WMD
>he says he's building it as a defense against hostile invasion
>he says he's also building it as an ace in the hole
>as a "last resort", he's wanting to basically glass an entire continent ("if need be"), to make room for his Elven kingdom
>quick background- the game allows you to become Elven; it expands your lifespan to 300 years and alters your appearance
>mfw strongly considering a contingency against my own friend, who has become an anime villain
What do, guys.

I'm not looking to retcon this. This is my first time as GM, and before I start making my Thou Shalt Not list and being That GM, I want to attempt a game in which my players have a hand in shaping the world. Basically, the ending of this adventure will determine our next adventure.

BUUUT... I'm Good. I can't, as a character, allow Rhino to just slaughter scores for his own insane megalomania.

What's the best open-ended system for running a small tabletop roleplaying campaign? I've roleplayed in tons of campaigns in everything from Pathfinder to Legend, but I want to GM for some friends. What is the best place to start? I would prefer a book. Just like, a big-ass book full of everything I could ever need to run a campaign, from world building to character creation.

Anyone have any ideas?

You opened your eyes as the pitch darkness of Carona's streets started to gradually lighten. Stretching your limbs, you run your fingers across the frosted covers of the face changing Diary of Reflections, a Relic you had taken as a reward from having survived - and solved - an unexpected trip into an Atelier. As sleep wasn't something you particularly needed, you had spent most of the night simply waiting for dawn to come. There was little else that could be done when any avenue of progress you could make required people to be awake for it.

Last night had been unexpectedly productive in some ways, and maddening in others. The good news being that you had a solid lead into finding Asche and Kara now, thanks to having exchanged quite a deal of accumulated knowledge for something more directly useful and tangible. All it would take is for you to hunt down a familiar guard and ask a few questions, and you'd presumably be well on your way into the underground. You hadn't expected to make that much progress, but it was simultaneously heartening and a little distressing to think that in one day, you had managed to get that far. On one hand, even just managing that was far more than you had personally expected to be able to accomplish on such short notice; On the other, you had spent an entire day just gaining access. If you were going to actually find your missing Testament and maid-secretary, it'd likely require far more than that.

...Which reminded you that, somehow, the serving girl from the pub had somehow become wrapped up in all of this. You had made every decision possible to keep her out, and she WOULD have been left out of it, if Maran hadn't taken that exact moment to come out of nowhere and open her thrice cursed mouth. One thing had led to another, and now Jill had managed to stubborn her way into 'helping' you locate Asche and Kara.

Just thinking about that gave you a headache, and the day hadn't even properly started yet.
27 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Regardless, Jill was involved now and you'd just have to work around that. At the very least it meant that someone else was helping you... But you're not sure if that's going to help or hinder, compared to having just done it yourself. You really worked better alone-

You froze in place, realizing whose sentiments you had begun to echo.

What?

No, having help was always preferable. You were just uneasy about the source of the help, that's all. You shake your head to dislodge the curious feeling trickling out from the back of your mind and crack your neck as you go over your options for today. The sun wasn't quite up yet, but you had too much to do to just waste time until the last second.

You had a meeting with the Shrine today to finalize the trading of the Atelier's information in exchange for their favour and assistance. You weren't sure when that would happen exactly, but you could probably show up at any time during the day and have the meeting get started.

Beyond that, there was also smuggling your knights into town somehow. That seemed like it would take more effort and knowledge about Carona than you currently had in order to get it done. Unlike yourself, your knights weren't particularly infamous in Carona, so it wasn't as if they needed to be incognito... They just needed to get past the lockdown, somehow. One way was as good as any other, if you could just get them inside the town.

And then finally there was the appointment between Roderick and the Mayor that you had inadvertently made. You had less and less time to find a way to intercept that invitation or include yourself in that activity, and if you went through all the trouble to set it up only to potentially lose your way in...

Never a dull moment in this Shade forsaken town.

As a forever DM I've been trying to put myself in the players seats to understand what they like about playing the game and what makes games in general fun. After much thought and even more bong hits I've decided I want to develop a campaign that allows players to "win" D&D, which for this purpose means advancing a single character from level 1 to 20 by acquiring 355,000+ experience points.

My hope is that by incorporating this grand objective with their character motivations and my adventure plot hooks, players will blend the meta aspects of RPGs into the setting in a way that doesn't feel intrusive and game breaking. Players will always think in terms of hit points and other mechanical stats, so the characters might as well too.

The setting will be a sand boxy 5E Dark Sun and allow for groups with mixed character levels.

What else should I be focusing on to make sure this doesn't suck all the dicks?
25 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>44531996
Winning D&D is like winning football.

You cannot win the whole thing, no matter how good you are. All you can do is win a scenario (or match). There's no need to have an arbitrary end-goal, when D&D already consists of scenarios to win or lose.
>>
>>44532058
Wait wait, don't be too hasty. I think this is a pretty interesting idea.

>>44531996
OP, how would you handle character death? Would you play out a revival arc or just have them roll a new character?
>>
>>44531996
Your first major hurdle is going to be figuring out why characters know what their hit points and save bonuses are, and so on. Why are people capable of precisely measuring themselves mathematically?

It does lend to a good dystopian setup, though--lots of completely justified species-based discrimination.

About to play my first game in a week or so and wanting to start out small. How would this list work out for a beginner?

Points: 15/15
The Butcher of Khardov (*6pts)
* Spriggan (10pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 5 Grunts) (4pts)
* Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)
* 2 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeers (2pts)
