How DO you get started with GMing?

I mean, when I started me and everyone I played with were 12 years old, so no one minded a load of fucking around and me making shit up and not following the rules right. until we eventually learned how shit worked after a year old bullshit.

At this point it's all second nature, but I can't even conceive how I'd get started if I didn't know shit and had to go in at ground level trying to please adults who want some kind of coherent experience.

How was everyone's sessions this weekend?

Hey /tg/, if I wanted to run a Persona themed RPG, what system should I use? I don't really care about translating the combat system in the game to pen-and-paper, I just want to have the theme of teenagers with powerful Stand-like helpers killing monsters in some alternate world.

I've been told about Monsters and Other Childish things but I don't know how well it would jive with the amount of combat.

Well anons, I have finally given up on Fantasycraft. It's officially dead to me, and no more promises of a new supplement will bring me back.

That being said, I need a new system, and so I thought my fellow anons would know a great system.
I'm looking for something crunchy, setting agnostic, and has decent supplements/isn't dead. (And yes, I know about GURPS)

I don't know Fantasycraft, but it sounds like you might be ready for ORE.

It is crunchy and scales down into a lot of detail if you want, but it's the fastest you will find. The core mechanism is gamist, but very easy to balance (# of d10 in pool). It offers per limb damage on multiple attacks including ini with one roll per PC.

The mechanics are incredibly flexible and more of a toolkit than a generic system. You can use it for any setting you want, but also for any kind of game. Make it more narrativist by connecting story to the dice. Make it more sim by detailing damage types and different armor/weapon effects. Keep it classic with stat+skill. Make it beer & pretzels easy or weeks of chargen complex, ORE helps you do it.

The published settings range from Monsters and Other Childish Things over Godlike/Wild Talents, to Reign and even Better Angels. Small downloads outline ideas like Nemesis, StarORE, or ORE Mecha. The independently collected system toolkit is a powerful resource. For a straight introduction in a classic genre I'd start with Reign Enchiridion, which is Reign without the setting in one affordable PDF. If you want to start free try Nemesis. The only genre missing from the ORE spectrum is some serious Scifi. For that Fate seems to be the way to go. But Fate won't do scary or overly gritty and ORE does that really well. ORE also gets a lot of supers, from low power mutants to super villains. But I'm not sure if that doesn't have so much to do with the mechanics as with the personal preferences of some of the makers. But ORE does do supers of all kinds well.

If you want everything statted out on books full of tables, go with gurps. If you'd rather build your own on a powerful system that does what you want it to, ORE is your game. Much of it is free. Just do a little searching.

How do people feel about hand crossbows (specifically dual-wielded) in fantasy games?

Even though I thought the demon hunter in D3 was pretty cool i find the idea of using it on the table a little goofy for most games. To me it can kind of seem over the top like on the level of the matrix or like some weeaboo shit, and how would a character reload a crossbow in each hand so quickly without dropping one?

I am currently playing DND 5E in which a character can use dual hand crossbows and fire them for all of their attacks in one turn after acquiring the proper feat. if you use dual wielding feat when your a fighter or ranger then you can fire a hand crossbow in each hand for a total of 2d6+6 (saying my dex mod is +3). Likewise, a longbow deals 1d8+3.

I dont want to be the guy that brings tries to have my character use a collapsible katana, but i dont want to take the cut in damage just to save face and personal preference. What do you all think about Handbows? Anybody familiar with 5E know away around it?

You only need one hand crossbow to do that. The feat doesn't say you can't use the hand crossbow you used in your attack action to also make the bonus action attack. And it doesn't say anywhere that you can load a hand crossbow without using your other hand or not, so being able to reload while dual wielding hand crossbows is a grey area, but firing one just as fast as you could with two is not.

You are Ricky Montana, Sergeant in the UNSC Army, 12.11.2552, currently assigned to 13th AD, 45th Bat, as a Tanker.
There are currently 231 Scorpions, 54 Rhinos, 36 Elephants, 378 Warthogs, 400 Tractor units, and more than 10,000 enlisted men about to step off.

But all this pales in comparison to, "WHAT THE FUCK, MAINTENANCE." You stare at your disemboweled tank, mouth agape. The track pods strewn across the floor of the Elephant, while the turret dangles precariously from the internal crane.

Your shout was loud, louder than the roaring engines powering the damn thing, loud enough in fact to rouse a response from the shiftless bum you call a Mechanic. A young sandy haired man peeps up from behind the wreck of your Scorpion, as he runs over you can see his freckled face, clean this morning, is now marred with soot and grease stains. "Okay, I know what you're thinking, I can explain..."

You stare at him, just waiting for a response that might cure your blood lust. A silence surrounds you as he stares back meekly. "Well?"

"Oh, I thought you was gonna yell at me like Mah, and Gunny do." He chuckles hesitantly as if to get you onside with a bit of humor. "Right, so while I was servicing the auto-loader I saw that the track pods weren't movin' properly so we pulled them off ta take a look. I was gonna have it all together before you got back but then some stuff happened and now I don't have it all back." He lets a sigh escape while awaiting your answer.

Step off is at daybreak tomorrow, whether or not your tank is ready the Battalion is going to roll out and you're going to be riding with the POGs until it gets done and that sure as shit isn't happening "This better be fixed by the time we leave tomorrow." You plant a finger on his chest. "Or I'm gonna be riding YOU into battle."

"Ye-yes, sir. Don'chu worry." He offers up a snappy salute.

You pause to weigh your options. It's a 100km march to Voi from the current staging point at the base of Kilimanjaro, you're doubtful there will be anytime to make changes to the armament during the march. The briefing earlier today indicated that contact with Covenant forces would be made at some point, composition from flyovers, and satellite imagery indicates the majority of resistance to be ground vehicles, most air power is concentrated around the ships between Voi and Mombasa.
The terrain is largely flat once you leave the Kilimanjaro area, it's easy to pass a Scorpion around the trees or even roll over them, however LOS appears to range from 1km to 3km.

The M808B has fared well against Covenant forces. Strong against Heavy vehicles, Canister shot supplements the coaxial gun in an AI roll, however relatively long reload puts it at a disadvantage.
The M808B2 is extremely effective against enemy infantry and light vehicles. Able to punch through shielded infantry and shred anything fast. Ineffective against heavy vehicles. Doesn't need to reload.
The M808B3 has not fared well against the Covenant due to the loss of the main gun to the dual rocket pods. By far the most destructive Scorpion variant able to lay down a salvo that would impress a Rhino Platoon, it's let down by the inability to reload without a support vehicle which is seldom available while in combat.

If the system is good I think this would be a very strong launch actually, like a potential rival for one of the most-played or strongest PnP IPs going. But they picked Fuzion probably because they are all actual hardcore nerds and didn't think or care about accessibility, so I expect it to just wind up as another niche game that more people play D&D/PF converted for the IP than the actual game for.
