It seems that insecurities of gamers have come full circle, to the point that they lash out at things that hit that special uncanny valley zone of being cool while also appealing too much demographics they're afraid associate with.

Themes of death, darkness, tragedy, and the orient - All these things have been practically branded taboo, and if someone brings them up they're accused of being a weeaboo or an edgy teenager. How strange is it really to play a dark, bloodthirsty character in a story which will most likely revolve around constant killing? How strange it really to say that your motives stem from the death of family and loved ones when it's such a practical explanation for someone constantly adventuring without having to worry about connections at home? The only thing strange is the distaste for cliches in games that are designed to embrace them. RPG's were originally created so that people could act out the adventures of heroes in fiction - the heroic paladin, the crafty ranger, the bookish wizard... For love of these cliches we play them. It does not matter how derivative your character is because no matter what you do your campaign is going to be unique. No matter how strict the module is, no campaigns can ever truly be the same story. With the quips, the stunts, the critical failures, and the like you and your party have created a story which belongs to yourselves. For that reason, there is no reason to pretend that the word "cliche" should carry the same weight in the context of traditional gaming as it does in writing or filmmaking.

As for edginess.... All that talk makes me want to write up some fuckin serial killer ninja-samurai-viking named "Death" who wears all black clothes and a bloody skull over his face under a tattered fedora while flamboyantly cutting his way through his enemies and innocents alike with fuckin dual katanas, all to avenge the death of his parents. He'll recite a relevant haiku each time he drops someone.

And you know what? I don't watch anime, I don't have emotional issues, I'm mature, intelligent, passive, and I have both a good self esteem and an outside social life. I just like fantasy. All of it. There are no lengths of cheesiness that I won't go because at the end of the day I'm not doing this to escape, I'm doing it for fun. I like myself and I like my life. I like theatrics and I like cliches. I like to act out characters and I like to weave a unique story with other people. And sometimes part of me too enjoys nerds on the internet rip each other apart in a lame effort to distinguish themselves as ever so slightly cooler, but for the most part I find it tiring and unecessary. I just beg of you to reserve your disdain for people who actually learn it with shitty behavior rather than tastes that you don't agree with. And be more honest with yourself. You know you like katanas. You know like the edgy backstories. Just do it, no one's judging you except some irritable, anonymous strangers.
>>
The difference between edgy and dark is like the difference between bathos and pathos. Until you're capable of recognizing it, it's time to put away the katana before you cut yourself.

I recently finished Ringworld and I can't get it out of my head how perfect it would be for a fantasy setting.
>an endless world full of countless stories
>countless homid races that range from humans to giants to dwarves and halflings to eleves...
>high tech artifacts that everyone regards as magic
>alien monsters to slay

I've been wanting to use a Ringworld for my setting too, although probably sci-fi over fantasy. I'd make my own stuff for the Ringworld's inhabitants, but definitely base the construct itself on Niven's ideas.
>>
>>47406087
That's what I was thinking.

I have this habit of coming up with science fiction rationalizations of every fantasy setting I immerse myself. The countless races of hominid in Niven's Ringworld setting is particularly interesting for explaining many fantasy-esque races evolving alongside one another.

I don't know how casted magic would work aside from maybe nanomachines or machinery that only reacts to specific genes.

Most campaigns never really go far enough to have their maps anything bigger then maybe Europe and Asia at the most.
The idea of the world forever arching skywards would be little more then window dressing really. That is unless this actually became important, plot wise.

I've played a campaign based in a craft that was pulling four Dyson spheres once.
We were cowboys using Savage Worlds rules, the sheriff was killed by lighting shot from a strange gun no one had ever seen before and we were the posse out to bring the crook to justice.
He had set up his inside a mountain and as the campaign continued we saw stranger and stranger weapons and gear, magic being preformed and many of the gang didn't actually want to fight, claiming they'd literally seen hell and didn't want to return.
Long story short, under the mountain was the entrance to the ship itself and among robotic crew we found a few odd communities of people.
It's a shame the campaign died as half the group ended up getting jobs, as this was just after we had finished high school, but the story was really just starting to ramble and lose focus. Years later the DM admitted he was making everything up on the fly and had no real plan past what was meant to be Cowboys and Space-Magic Indians.

We all know that medieval clothing was colorful as fuck. This begs the question, 'why do all the nobles in all the medieval movies/tv shows wear dirt shit brown?' The simplest answer in my mind is that dirt shit brown is gritty and cool.

Now neither I, nor movie producers could give a flying fuck if you think dirt shit brown is gritty and cool, but knowing that producers and executives think that way, How do we make color gritty and cool in fantasy?

Getting red back in could be a first step, but what's next? Maybe purple

You are Sonia Reynard, Baron of Rioja. One small world among many in the House of Jerik-Dremine. From it you control the fates of a dozen others in the so called Smuggler's Run. With your new position you have the opportunity to become one of the most influential people in your House.

It is from this world that you draw your fleets and armies from. Both have seen their share of action with anti-piracy actions, an invasion of Bonrah's local territory and raids into the next Nav Relay.

It is 4033 and as the Dominion slips deeper into civil war you and those under your command have been fighting to protect your little corner of known space. With the return of the Forbearance and its fleet House Nasidum and their allies attempted to intercept them and deprive you of vital ships. Though they failed they began to take control of space surrounding a Navigator station in the Centri cluster that would allow them to cut you off from the shortest route to the homeworlds.

Over the next week they and their allies mustered more of their fleets as the Ruling House and other allies did the same. Launching an all out attack to disrupt their efforts the allied fleet were able to get a vital gravity well generator through the fighting. It will allow your fleet an incredible advantage when the attack on the DRH 1 relay begins.

While the Ruling House and Ber'helum were forced to withdraw their attack did buy time. Nasidum is now awaiting the arrival of additional Heavy Carrier groups from House Bonrah before they can launch their attack on your territory.

Thread starter question: What do you consider an ideal starting level for players who are experienced and comfortable with 4e?

If you are GMing, remember...
1. To strongly consider giving out at least one free "tax feat," like Expertise and pre-errata Melee Training.
2. To use Monster Manual 3/Monster Vault/Monster Vault: Nentir Vale/Dark Sun Creature Catalog math. Avoid or manually update anything with Monster Manual 1 or 2 math.
3. That skill challenges have always been scene-framing devices for the GM, that players should never be overtly told that they are in a skill challenge, and that the Rules Compendium has the most up-to-date skill DCs and skill challenge rules.

If you would like assistance with character optimization, remember to tell us what the what the rest of the players are playing, what books are allowed, your starting level, the highest level you expect to reach, what free feats you receive, if anything is banned, whether or not themes are allowed, your starting equipment, and how much you dislike item-dependent builds.
If you wish to talk about settings, 4e's settings are Points of Light (the planes and the natural world's past empires are heavily detailed in various sourcebooks and magazines), 4e Forgotten Realms, 4e Eberron, 4e Dark Sun, and whatever setting you would like to bring into 4e.

>What to expect, I only heard that battles are long and boring as fuck.
Only when the players aren't on the ball.
When it's not your turn, pay attention and think about what you are going to do on your turn.
When your turn comes up, don't sit there indecisively hemming and hawing and complaining about analysis paralysis or 'too many options.' Just fucking do something.

>Also what is the current class tier list?
Just don't play Essentials classes. Everything else is fine.

As long as your group is using the fixed monster math, it should be fine. Just make sure your GM is using the M&M3 monsters and the recommended adjustments there- Pic related.

4e doesn't really have a tier list. Almost all the classes are completely functional, with a few unfortunate exceptions. Essentials classes are boring as fuck, Vampire and Assassin were released in a borked state and never fixed, and the Seeker psionic class is unfortunately underwhelming. Beyond that, you're good with picking whatever seems cool to you.

>Several clades of spiders whose females evolved giant sizes are known for extreme sexual behaviors such as sexual cannibalism, opportunistic mating, mate-binding, genital mutilation, plugging, and emasculation. However, these behaviors have only been tested in a handful of size dimorphic spiders. Here, we bring another lineage into the picture by reporting on sexual behavior of Darwin’s bark spider, Caerostris darwini. This sexually size dimorphic Madagascan species is known for extreme web gigantism and for producing the world’s toughest biomaterial. Our field and laboratory study uncovers a rich sexual repertoire that predictably involves cannibalism, genital mutilation, male preference for teneral females, and emasculation. Surprisingly, C. darwini males engage in oral sexual encounters, rarely reported outside mammals. Irrespective of female’s age or mating status males salivate onto female genitalia pre-, during, and post-copulation. While its adaptive significance is elusive, oral sexual contact in spiders may signal male quality or reduce sperm competition.
