While I like Scion fluff they don't feel like they have enough teeth to actually be a threat to anything (when run pure and free from allies) that brings tanks and/or pieplates. Getting a unit back (likely on a roll meaning it's not a sure thing) isn't a horrible way to keep them in the fight.
Plus new units are worth kill points so that helps balance things a bit.

take 2 damage a turn or sac a creature. Scratch damage in a 40 life format, especially when decks can have excessive life/creatures that they dont care about.

I run Mogis in my Nekusar deck. The abilities are average at best but its fun to use and getting him into creature form isn't hard either.

Well, a competent decker can programm SmartSteel into any form, so you could have a bracer that unwraps itself into a shield.

Yep. If you toss in Magical Knack and a Bead of Karma you can get +5s out of Greater Magic Weapon at 14th level (CL 13 Base + 4 Divine Bond + 4 Bead of karma). This same effect also gives you one of the best control pools for undead in the game, so long as you've got a sane GM.
