I dunno; they were what I read to get into D&D since I found 1e too wordy as a kid to understand well.

Maybe the game was just overshadowed by it's campaign settings

If you're actually asking for all the complaints there are for the system, there's several decades worth, ranging from things everyone generally agrees upon to minor personal grievances.

But, the same could be really said about any system.

With that out of the way, I'd much rather focus on the good aspects of the system, primarily its lore and writing, and the amazing settings that were developed during that era.

Is there any demand for the source books? cause . . .

Reminder that preferred spells are not actually spells your flake uses, but schools and variants of magic they know and prefer. Look at what they do conceptually, not mechanically.

I'll agree with this, using a flake that I made ages ago as an example.

He doesn't summon Palisade Giants and Darksteel Myrs to give them Indestructible and Pariah respectively. It's simply an idea of the sort of magic he uses at a personal level. He is a suit of darksteel fused to flesh and he uses his magic to redirect any damage that would be inflicted on others, directing it at his own near-indestructible being instead.

I personally use the cards as another sort of flavor to give the character identity in my head, rather than THIS IS 100% THE DECK THAT THIS CHARACTER USES TO FIGHT.

It is 21 years since famed mercenary Bob Denard lead his fourth and final coup in the Comoros, codenamed Operation Kaskari. His provisional government was removed bloodlessly by French Special Forces in Operation Azalee a week later.

Denard and 33 hand-picked mercenaries docked their ship, Vulcain, at Moroni harbour and descended on the city, forcibly removing the figures of the official government before the ill-equipped army was aware. The invaders had been stowing away on Vulcain for more than a month, and were greeted at their arrival by vans supplied by the relatives of former president Ahmed Abdallah.

The French authorities had some advance notice of the coup, as they had before. But unlike Denard's previous coups, the French government opposed and denounced Denard. Knowing this, Denard's first priority was to prevent the likely counter-coup from his homeland. In addition to political pacification measures, such as forming a civilian government, Denard also tried to recreate the 500-strong presidential guard that he had led after his second coup (1978–1989). Denard's popularity during the early 1980s enabled him to mobilise 300 supporters within five days and place them around ports and airports, where they would be most effective to ambush French invaders with submachine guns.

Knowing what they would encounter on the islands, the French did not pursue their extreme numerical advantage, instead handing control to the Special Operations Command. Eventually, 400 marines and 200 other special operations experts began cruising the Indian Ocean in patrol boats and a frigate.

Take important utility powers like Improved Invisibility and Heal, for example.

Invest heavily in Assensing, because it's stupid-good and you're the only guy in the group who has it.

Have at least one direct damage combat spell, because you're also the only guy who can reliably fight against spirits.

During your down time, summon and bind powerful spirits, so that when shit hits the fan you can make a wish and have one or more spirits do their best to fulfill it.

Look into acquiring Foci. A decently-high Force Health Sustaining Focus, for example, is a truly beautiful thing as far as sustaining both Improved Reflexes and Heal is concerned.

The three stats you need to have at maximum or one-less-than-maximum are Willpower, Intuition, and whatever your Drain stat is (Logic for Hermetics, Charisma for Shamans, and other stats for other traditions). Everything else is technically optional, but I've never seen anyone regret buying things like Body, Agility, and some kind of firearms skill for shooting at people.

Your attack spells won't be as powerful as bullets. Being good at shooting will usually be a better idea than being good at attack spells, barring enemies specifically vulnerable to your magic or unusually immune to your bullets.

Max magic and your drainstat, get willpower to 5. Decent body and reactions/intuition are also good, but those are a later priority unless you're an intuition tradition. I recommend an intuition tradition unless you want to be a face, makes getting initiative easier.

Get assensing, improve reflexes, heal, trid phantasm, stunball, a Force 4 Sustaining (Health) focus. Get other spells too, plenty of other useful ones like levitate.

Put at least one point in the Athletics group, the Pistols skill as a backup, and get loads of assensing. You also want good arcana since you need it to initiate.

You still have to worry about them. The damage doesn't go away, it gets stored up and you suddenly have cuts and gunshots or whatever appearing all over you. If you are lucky, the hits were really strong and only 1/3 as effective as normal for the beginning of your health.

That is true, but I'm a sucker for additional shield and health bars.
It would be really nice if it didn't kick back onto you afterwards with the exception of overflowing, but I don't know if that can be justified in canon.

There being a major "blessing" on a traitor guard army seems like too much attention especially considering human lives are so cheap in 40k and your renegade infantry all die horribly when shot at. Maybe shift the blessing to the leaders and have the mooks engage in rituals to see the world as their leaders do.

Sound reasoning.
The main focus of the army is gonna be a Psykana detachment who ran afoul of a few Daemons they didn't handle as well as they thought they did. After that, they managed to pull a few Knight Titans and a bunch of infantry under their sway.
So Psykana is the focus of the army with the Knights playing pretty important roles in the "protect the squishy little wizards" department while the big infantry platoon runs around their feet like abnormally large but still insignificant ants.
